To feel inconvenienced by a tragic accident?

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 11:36

I'm currently in Italy (staying in Rome) for three nights. It's my first foreign break in a warm country and I've been so excited and saved up especially.

We booked an excursion for today consisting of a trip to Sorrento where we'd spend time exploring, visiting shops and enjoying local food - and then on to Pompeii on the route back.

We've spent the whole morning/day so far stuck in traffic on the motor way. We are so behind schedule we can now no longer go to Sorrento first because Pompeii closes at 5.30 and there won't be time. A sit down restaurant meal will now be replaced by a takeaway which will be eaten on the coach.

We've just been told the cause of the traffic jam and it's because somebody has died in a collision on the motorway.

Instead of feeling saddened about the loss of life I just feel inconvenienced and pissed off that the highlight of my trip has been ruined.

Does this make me a shitty person? It just occurred that it might 😳

No YANBU. When I worked in London albeit decades ago, a couple of times people jumped in front of the tube in the morning rush hour. People were furious that they were going to miss an interview/be late for work.

Its human nature.

An RTA isn’t necessarily an accident. Someone will probably have been driving like a dick for it to have happened.

I thought so. Damn what a wake up call.

Can you re plan the trip

SuperTrooper1111 · 11/08/2025 17:38

First post always nails it.

Arlanymor · 11/08/2025 17:39

I wrote my responses from the perspective of someone who had two family members knocked off the side of a mountain road by a drunk driver in the days before the Heads of the Valleys was redesigned. Everybody died. Some people got held up for an hour or two. No virtue signalling or fake empathy here - it’s a gruelling thing for all concerned, emergency services included, and a delay to plans, even holiday ones, is incredibly minor in the grand scheme of things…

AmateurDramatics · 11/08/2025 17:39

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 11/08/2025 17:33

That was my entire point in the days of modern technology like dash cams + black boxes we don’t need hours of investigations we need the road open. If you don’t want to have a dash cam and someone crashes into you then sorry but it’s doesn’t mean the road should be closed for hours. “Justice” isn’t going to bring them back anyway.

If you are opening one lane you can wave the stuck traffic past at less than 10mph if your car can’t drive over a damaged road surface at that speed it shouldn’t be on the road!

Imagine you miss your sisters or your kids wedding because your stuck in an accident that is going upset you, a missed investigation isn’t even going to register.

😂 ok then

SparklesGlitter · 11/08/2025 17:39

erm…yes??? Someone has died and a family has lost a loved one. I probably would not have posted about this 🤷🏻‍♀️ I assume you’ll get reimbursed for the lack of a trip. Just thank your lucky stars that your coach wasn’t caught up in it and that you’re still on holiday

LemonCheesecake2025 · 11/08/2025 17:41

EvenHungrierHippo · 11/08/2025 17:36

Yes you did. And it seems you have had your post deleted because it was a personal attack. It’s funny that the people who try to come across as nice, so often aren’t.

I have more compassion in my big toe than some of you have in your whole body.

The only thing I got wrong was the word I used for someone choosing to end their life. Which I apologise for.

I knew how the person died in the original post so stop making things up.

It is, but people are still allowed to think of themselves and its human nature to do so. I also say that as someone that lost a relative to a drunk driver 20 years ago, causing a road closure, and as the friend of someone who died by suicide in a way which caused a delay of many hours for some people on Xmas Eve. People are allowed to put themselves first and are entitled to have feelings if they miss out on something because of something like this. I’m sure OP wishes the person hadn’t died, but other than that, life goes on.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 11/08/2025 17:45

EvenHungrierHippo · 11/08/2025 17:26

Oh dear. You’re asking if people are thick when you have got the thread all wrong. It wasn’t suicide, it was a car accident. And saying.’committed’ suicide could upset people, it’s not the socially acceptable way to word it now. Keep virtue signalling, whilst getting so much wrong though. 🙄

Edited

She knows it was a car crash. She was referencing the post that mentioned suicide.
Have you read the full thread at all?

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 11/08/2025 17:46

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 17:29

Some of the replies have really made me laugh so thanks for that. No, not the posts from people talking about having lost loved ones.

"Get up you fucker, I want to see Pompeii!" Is gold.

I do find it odd how mumsnet is KNOWN for being full of snippy and cold posters, especially on AIBU, yet suddenly the forum is full of fluffy super empaths who feel the pain of every Tom Dick and Harry who've ever lost somebody or a cat within the span of 10 countries.

Personally I think lots of you are full of shit (people who relate to the accident/death aside) because I've seen a fair few of your names before being rude as hell to other OP's 🤣

For those asking why I started the thread, I was stuck on the motorway with nothing better to do. HTH

You really are a delight, aren't you?

Quite ironic really that you asked people to decide whether you were a shitty person then you go on to show yourself to be exactly that.

Charltonstrek · 11/08/2025 17:50

Arlanymor · 11/08/2025 12:02

All these posters writing: "You're allowed to feed sad AND disappointed" must have missed this line in the original post:

"Instead of feeling saddened about the loss of life I just feel inconvenienced and pissed off that the highlight of my trip has been ruined."

She doesn't feel sad at all.

At least she's admitted she knows that is wrong.

bumblingbovine49 · 11/08/2025 17:51

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 12:14

Honestly I don't feel sadness no, but I understand why other people would - especially the family.

It is not necessarily about sadness but perspective. I would feel inconvenienced too but would tell myself it could be worse, I could have died in a car crash . This would mitigate some of the irritation that I would definitely also feel at the inconvenience.

If I were inconvenienced in the same way but for a reason that was less traumatic, I'd probably be more annoyed but that is not necessarily a good thing as it would be my blood pressure at more risk😀

WhereIsMyJumper · 11/08/2025 17:52

Before I even opened this thread I knew it would be full of virtue signalling bullshit.

On average, about 100 people die in RTAs in the UK every month. It’s tragic, yes, but I’m assuming most posters don’t fall apart over every single one else they’d get nothing done.

EvenHungrierHippo · 11/08/2025 17:53

People telling others off for being meanies while getting deleted for making personal attacks. 😂 The irony.

I also think a lot of people forget that people recognise usernames from past threads and that advanced search is a thing.

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 17:36

Oh give it a rest Doris. Nobody here has laughed about suicide at all. It's awful that you are making such allegations.

Here we go, another put down from op🙄Just because l disagree with you, that makes me a 'Doris', nice your ageist as well.F.Y.I, l’m in my mid 30’s.
I won’t give it a rest, your thread is awful!
And l’m not making allegations, thankfully l can’t cross reference the posts being referred to, because they’ve been deleted.I wonder why that it is.

Quite.

Some of these posters are just grief vultures. They’re all over certain threads competing for who cried the most over the latest tragedy that they treat as a soap opera. They are far worse people than the rest of us.

Personal attacks, not really. More calling someone out for being goady on a particularly sensitive thread.

You're the ageist one. You're basically saying only elderly people have the name Doris. I didn't say that? What a strange leap.
