To feel inconvenienced by a tragic accident?

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 11:36

I'm currently in Italy (staying in Rome) for three nights. It's my first foreign break in a warm country and I've been so excited and saved up especially.

We booked an excursion for today consisting of a trip to Sorrento where we'd spend time exploring, visiting shops and enjoying local food - and then on to Pompeii on the route back.

We've spent the whole morning/day so far stuck in traffic on the motor way. We are so behind schedule we can now no longer go to Sorrento first because Pompeii closes at 5.30 and there won't be time. A sit down restaurant meal will now be replaced by a takeaway which will be eaten on the coach.

We've just been told the cause of the traffic jam and it's because somebody has died in a collision on the motorway.

Instead of feeling saddened about the loss of life I just feel inconvenienced and pissed off that the highlight of my trip has been ruined.

Does this make me a shitty person? It just occurred that it might 😳

I’m on the fence. It’s ok to feel upset that you’re missing your trip, at the end of the day you didn’t know that person.

However, that person meant the world to someone else/multiple people and this will be an awful time for them. You can always go back if it means that much to you. That person will miss out on the rest of their life.

Hopefully, that puts it into perspective.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/08/2025 16:39

Okay none of us like our plans being messed about.
However Your 3rd paragraph is quite disturbing to read. To be quite honest you’re coming over like a narcissist. Mind you a bit more compassion you'd be a narcissist!

JeremiahBullfrog · 11/08/2025 11:50

Was it actually a tragic accident though, or was it some twat deliberately flouting the road rules?

(I don't expect you to know, of course. But a lot of "accidents" on the road are the result of deliberately reckless behaviour.)

What it’s ’some twat’ they usually kill or injure someone else rather than themselves sadly.

Member869894 · 11/08/2025 16:42

Yes it does.

ClosetBasketCase · 11/08/2025 16:45

Not unreasonble. I feel like it every damn week on the motorway i'm on. If its not some prat (usually the same one) trying to throw themselves off the motorway bridge, or walking down the motorway - on one occasion saying they'll off themselves if their girlfriend doesn't get back together with them, then its the wretched highway maintenence playing silly buggers with incident management and keeping the road shut for hours when there isnt even a fatality - and when there is? god knows they keep it shut for far longer than neccessary.

I'm totally with you. especially on a trip like that!

(No, this is not a reverse answer, no it it not satire etc - and also for referance - I have both been and had family in the bridge situation - and its actually made me even less empathetic than i was before. Now it just messes up my day and pisses me off. even more so as they usually walk past the bloody hospital to get to that thrice forsaken bridge!)

Not always. Sometimes when you have lost someone and you have grief vultures who didn’t know the person, talking about it a lot, saying they’re devastated, it just makes you sick. They’re not devastated, they often just want the gossip and drama.

This isn’t about being devastated, this is about a really inappropriate thread and others on here, who think it’s appropriate to then go onto posting about suicide, that it’s funny, making light of it and that it’s inconvenient to them.

BondAway25 · 11/08/2025 15:15

You could have just thought it, why did you need to post it?

Because it’s relevant to the subject matter and was only deleted because it referenced a post that had been previously deleted.

It really is an awful thread.

People who commit suicide are nearly always in a very dark place. I've heard of two cases recently where a teenager boy and also a young man with a young family had taken their own lives. I didn't know them but I felt so sad for them and their families.

WhamBamThankU · 11/08/2025 16:52

Yes it makes you shitty and so does starting this thread about it tbf.

Not my offence. My post was only deleted because it referenced a previously deleted post.

Oh FFS, it’s not inappropriate. OP isn’t saying this to the family of the person that died, she’s writing on an anonymous forum. People are allowed to think of themselves and virtue signallers are far more annoying, pretending they’re truly upset about the death of strangers. They may think it’s sad, but their life carries on, yet they come here to tell others off. 🙄

It’s a hard one, thousands die everyday, but then a death other than natural causes is a tragedy for the family. It’s the desire to find blame that drives me bonkers after sitting on the motorway for hours. A conviction isn’t going to bring the person back and it wouldn’t provide me any comfort if it was my family. You have the option of dash cams now which would get the whole incident as evidence if you as a person desire anyone involved in your death to be brought to “justice”.

In my head golden hour for treatment/recovery of the victims. Then 45 minutes to move the vehicles so you get at least one lane in each direction gives a maximum acceptable closure of what 2 hours.

Remember the people in the jam may also be devastated at missing once in a life time events such as weddings which can be just as devastating as a death.

AmateurDramatics · 11/08/2025 17:09

@Anothercoffeeafter3 You’re forgetting the thorough investigation that’s needed after an accident as well as sometime damage to the road and road furniture to make it safe for others. 2 hours is nothing!!

Also… what have I just read?! That’s really tone deaf and frankly a ridiculous statement.

LemonCheesecake2025 · 11/08/2025 17:14

@anothercoffeeafter3 you must really like weddings.

It wasn't a suicide! It was a car crash.

Someone has lost their loved one in tragic circumstances is all that matters.

Oh dear. You’re asking if people are thick when you have got the thread all wrong. It wasn’t suicide, it was a car accident. And saying.’committed’ suicide could upset people, it’s not the socially acceptable way to word it now. Keep virtue signalling, whilst getting so much wrong though. 🙄

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 17:29

Some of the replies have really made me laugh so thanks for that. No, not the posts from people talking about having lost loved ones.

"Get up you fucker, I want to see Pompeii!" Is gold.

I do find it odd how mumsnet is KNOWN for being full of snippy and cold posters, especially on AIBU, yet suddenly the forum is full of fluffy super empaths who feel the pain of every Tom Dick and Harry who've ever lost somebody or a cat within the span of 10 countries.

Personally I think lots of you are full of shit (people who relate to the accident/death aside) because I've seen a fair few of your names before being rude as hell to other OP's 🤣

For those asking why I started the thread, I was stuck on the motorway with nothing better to do. HTH

That was my entire point in the days of modern technology like dash cams + black boxes we don’t need hours of investigations we need the road open. If you don’t want to have a dash cam and someone crashes into you then sorry but it’s doesn’t mean the road should be closed for hours. “Justice” isn’t going to bring them back anyway.

If you are opening one lane you can wave the stuck traffic past at less than 10mph if your car can’t drive over a damaged road surface at that speed it shouldn’t be on the road!

Imagine you miss your sisters or your kids wedding because your stuck in an accident that is going upset you, a missed investigation isn’t even going to register.

Posting about suicide on here and laughing about it, that’s what’s been posted on this thread, was going to quote, what some posters have said, but they’ve been deleted, for a reason. This has been driven by op’s thread and also the way she’s spoken to other posters.
I couldn’t care less that you’re getting frustrated, that other posters are disagreeing with op and opinions like yours🙄

Oh give it a rest Doris. Nobody here has laughed about suicide at all. It's awful that you are making such allegations.

Yes you did. And it seems you have had your post deleted because it was a personal attack. It’s funny that the people who try to come across as nice, so often aren’t.
