To feel inconvenienced by a tragic accident?

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 11:36

I'm currently in Italy (staying in Rome) for three nights. It's my first foreign break in a warm country and I've been so excited and saved up especially.

We booked an excursion for today consisting of a trip to Sorrento where we'd spend time exploring, visiting shops and enjoying local food - and then on to Pompeii on the route back.

We've spent the whole morning/day so far stuck in traffic on the motor way. We are so behind schedule we can now no longer go to Sorrento first because Pompeii closes at 5.30 and there won't be time. A sit down restaurant meal will now be replaced by a takeaway which will be eaten on the coach.

We've just been told the cause of the traffic jam and it's because somebody has died in a collision on the motorway.

Instead of feeling saddened about the loss of life I just feel inconvenienced and pissed off that the highlight of my trip has been ruined.

Does this make me a shitty person? It just occurred that it might 😳

No it hasn't, and I'm sorry but so many people think this type of thing.

HairyToity · 11/08/2025 15:34

I sometimes think it, but I don't say it out loud. Hope your holiday improves.

Yes, it did/does/would have...

to know the death of your loved one / how that impacted you was given more thought/sone thought is/was thought about by others did/does bring some comfort.

im surprised you can't imagine that.

Not always. Sometimes when you have lost someone and you have grief vultures who didn’t know the person, talking about it a lot, saying they’re devastated, it just makes you sick. They’re not devastated, they often just want the gossip and drama.

You're just being human and having uncharitable thoughts at the moment.

Probably will feel differently in a few days when you've processed your disappointment.

It wasn't even my train that got cancelled because someone was "hit by a train" but I heard that announcement so frequently I got completely desensitized to it.

Yes, it's relatively common and causes a shed-load of disruption for people that just want to get home to their families. I don't think there are many commuters who have a lot of compassion in these circumstances, except for the poor drivers who are traumatised by what occurs. Accidents are another thing entirely, though, and I think most people feel sad for the victims and families, although the extent of the sadness depends on proximity to the situation.

Maybe because the poster was being goady?
No idea why MY replies were deleted.
Yes, this has provoked a strong reaction in me, I actually think the OP was wrong for even starting this thread in the first place.
It's not just about the fact it has happened to me and others reading this, its the complete lack of empathy for the family of whoever has been killed.
This thread has actually brought back some very painful memories and feelings for me, the fact that some people are even posting laughing emojis is making me even angrier.

So leave the thread, why are you re-traumatising yourself on purpose by reading along and posting repeatedly?

Someone’s suicide once caused me to have an extremely stressful 5 hour journey home in the days before gps. They closed the tunnel through the mountain that was between my home and work for many hours while they investigated. I had to find a way home that went around. Was it sad, yes. Was I frustrated, yes.

I‘m going with yes this bit does make you a shitty person. It’s the “instead of..” It reads that you’re incapable of feeling both saddened that someone lost their life this morning and frustrated at the inconvenience it’s caused you. What’s stopping you feeling both things?

Life sometimes throws us curves balls. Yours today was missing your special trip. The person in the vehicle on the motorway today had death as their curveball. Their family will now be in absolute hell for months - that was their curveball.

I can only assume you’ve never been through the kind of loss that the relatives of the person holding up your trip today are going through. You’d be capable of a bit of empathy if you had.

btw @OnemargarIta your latest post above is pretty grim. You sound nasty. People are allowed to feel emotive if what you post triggers something awful and traumatic from their past.. maybe put a trigger warning on your title?

Dimdam · 11/08/2025 15:51

If you’re asking you know the answer, it’s the sort of reaction I’d expect from a sociopath! Though in this day and age of self absorption and narcissism your attitude doesn’t surmise me. Believe me I’m not one to gush over with feelings at such an event but I do have respect for the situation.

The person is dead so his or her troubles are over, but, but you’ve failed to take into consideration their relatives. The deceased could be someone’s father, mother’s brother sister, daughter, son etc you have can always book another holiday the dead person can’t.

Ive done a lot of travelling, if you travel there is always a chance things can and will go wrong, that has to be factored into your travel plans, you think the world revolves around you, well I’ve got news for you, it doesn’t. In the grand scheme of things we are nothing but pimple on the ass of life.

DiscoBob · 11/08/2025 15:54

I do feel inconvenienced when someone I care for deeply has an accident or emergency. Because it is actually going to impact my life as well as theres. I will need to do more, care more, think more about them. So it's human nature when it will change your life for a significant period of time.

Not because you missed out on one day of a fancy holiday.

It's the crowing about it that's also shitty.

So delete the thread.
Why did you even post it in the first place knowing thered be people on here who have been through this?
The fact that you've just coldly said that to me shows me that you do lack empathy and that, yes, you are indeed an incredibly shitty person. And a not very nice one to boot!

OneKhakiFish · 11/08/2025 15:59

You're entitled to your feelings but mine would be sadness for the life lost and the families and friends who have suddenly received horrible news.

Shorkie · 11/08/2025 15:59

SilenceInside · 11/08/2025 11:44

Is it not possible to feel both things? Sadness and empathy for someone who has died, and their friends/family, whilst also recognising the frustration and annoyance that your short break has been significantly disrupted. The second shouldn't remove the first.

this!!

SonK · 11/08/2025 16:18

Well yes because it's not very nice how you talk about it in your initial post

Just remember, one day it could be your death or tragedy that people like yourself may feel "inconvenienced and pissed off" that it got in the way of their day.

No one is immune to death, always be grateful it wasn't you.
