Supply Teacher giggling at name of child in class

Is it very unprofessional for a supply teacher to start giggling when taking the register in a class which they have not taught in before, because one of the children's names is "Bourbon"? Supply teacher in question is normally very professional but couldn't help themselves when hearing the name of the child.

I’ve posted this before but honest to God there was an SEN teacher at my children’s primary school called Mr Shaw Twilley. A couple of dads had to walk out of a parents evening until they could pull themselves together. The kids didn’t find it funny but the parents did.

Unless you missed out on the hyphen in your post, looks like there are two teachers with similar names- and this guy is a head teacher.😂 ( Google The Buchan School)

ThePoshUns · 10/08/2025 08:46

Are you the supply teacher?

Chipotlego · 10/08/2025 08:47

Yeah it's unprofessional, but teachers are human too- I am sure we have all fought but lost the battle in trying not to laugh at certain things.

Very unprofessional. Really takes the biscuit.

That one’s a cracker!

ElfAndSafetyBored · 09/08/2025 22:55

Bourbon? To be fair, it’s probably helping them build them a thick skin for the rest of their life, they’ll need it.

I’m not condoning it, honest I’m not. But why name a kid after a biscuit?

Perhaps the child was named after the drink.

GleisZwei · 10/08/2025 08:50

Yes, it's rude, but what on earth were the parents thinking?

I did miss the hyphen out! ‘‘Twas indeed Mr Shaw-Twilley.

When parents choose these names for their children they are leaving them open to ridicule through most of their life not the child's fault but the fault of silly adults who don't think about the consequences for the child.

WaltzingWaters · 10/08/2025 08:58

It’s really cruel to the child and unprofessional.
But what on earth were the parents thinking? Poor child. They have given a hell of a lifelong challenge there.

The biscuit is named after a dynasty of French Kings.

( but it is still a strange name for a British child).

cumbriaisbest · 10/08/2025 09:02

Teacher laughs. Yes report them immediately for showing human characteristics.

Oioisavaloy27 · 10/08/2025 09:05

Are we going to find out the child's surname is McVities?

Sesma · 10/08/2025 09:06

The parents were being unreasonable

Mumdiva99 · 10/08/2025 09:09

Chiseltip · 09/08/2025 23:24

Who on earth named their child Burbon?
😂

That kid is going to spend their life having the piss taken out of them and people laughing at their name.

May as well start getting used to it . .

I imagine it's pronounced Bore-bon - a bit like pom-pom....but in a sing song French accent....

Andbegin · 10/08/2025 09:09

I think he was called Jack Daniel’s.

Caught Op unawares as it’s so incongruous in a classroom situation.

We don’t know but it might be a surname?

Hope the supply teacher manages to compose herself in September when this new child joins the class...

Why are you only choosing black actors to make fun of?

OP, yes it’s completely unprofessional and twatty behaviour.

CurtainSunrise · 10/08/2025 09:12

I have worked in the nhs for thirty years and have heard all sorts of names. I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at that name, never mind giggled. Lots of easily-amused people on this thread!

58andnotout · 10/08/2025 09:16

Yes , it wrong. Just as bad as you putting the name on here.

Or Jim Beam. Or Johnnie Walker.

TaborlinTheGreat · 10/08/2025 09:20

Of course it's unprofessional. Yes, teachers are only human, but teachers should also be used to the concept of coming across surprising names. Having your name mocked or laughed at by your peers must be bad enough, but having it laughed at by the adult who should be in charge of stopping that kind of behaviour is even worse. Once the other kids see the name as laughable, that will probably stick.

I've taught kids with frankly hilarious names. I've never come close to laughing at them to their faces, because I have self control and I'm not a dick.

Pluvia · 10/08/2025 09:20

OP, depends on whether Bourbon was his first or last name. Last name, unacceptable. Bourbon is an honourable surname. First name, understandable. I blame the parents and if they didn't want this to happen they should have called him Archie or Oliver.

If it's poor Bourbon's first name, I predict he'll one day follow the lead of Zowie Bowie and change his name to Duncan or something similarly rebelliously dull.

Really really unprofessional. I work with pre schoolers, about 50% of everything they say is hilarious and suppressing laughter is pretty much training 101. They ask dumb questions and get words mixed up all the time. We never laugh at them, we wait til they are out of earshot and then have a giggle. Having a grown up laugh at your name or something you say or do absolutely wrecks a kids confidence. Unfortunately a kid with a weird name has to learn to cope with this throughout life so will have to learn to live with laughs or silly comments.
