Supply Teacher giggling at name of child in class

Is it very unprofessional for a supply teacher to start giggling when taking the register in a class which they have not taught in before, because one of the children's names is "Bourbon"? Supply teacher in question is normally very professional but couldn't help themselves when hearing the name of the child.

Best friends with Jack and Daniel?

Notmyreality · 10/08/2025 07:29

Humans are allowed to have human reactions, especially to silly things.
Poor kid with idiot parents.

MyDeftDuck · 10/08/2025 07:35

When I was at senior school, back in the days before colour was discovered, before every home had electricity and gas, before the internal combustion engine was invented and when children were sent up chimneys, the class register was called using the pupils surnames……….just saying 👩‍🔧.

Bourbon? To be fair, it’s probably helping them build them a thick skin for the rest of their life, they’ll need it.

I’m not condoning it, honest I’m not. But why name a kid after a biscuit?

My son is called Garri-Baldi. He loves his name and his sister Di-Gestive

Perfect 🤣🤣

Shellyash · 10/08/2025 07:40

I love Bourbon. Maybe the kid was called jack Daniels and they called him bourbon for short?
Teacher well out of order, can they not be reported and sacked for ever? Or are they actual humans underneath?

AuntyDepressant · 10/08/2025 07:40

Yes it's unprofessional but I'm not quite sure what else the parents were expecting to be honest.

Mousehi · 10/08/2025 07:41

I teach a lot of international students and have had a fair few called fuk, poo and wang. It's definitely unprofessional to snigger. For all I know my name probably means something sewer-cover in mandarin.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 10/08/2025 07:44

Pronounced Berbun like the American whiskey or Borbun like the biscuit?

Yes it's unprofessional, but when you get the giggles about something it's hard to suppress it. How do you know about this, anyway? Were you there? Is it your child?

WonderingWanda · 10/08/2025 07:46

Yes, it's incredibly unprofessional. I would 100% wait until I was in the staffroom and then I would have a good laugh with all the other teachers at that ridiculous name. I am assuming that's not the actual name you called you child though and you've changed it for anonymity?

Complain to the head in writing that OP had a child in her class with an amusing name??

I can't stop laughing at this thread. I'm not sure it is genuine. Even my daughter Rich Tea has had a laugh.

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/08/2025 07:49

It’s an awful name. Probably just a gut reaction to giggle but these days there is at least one daft name in every class so they should be used to it.

HonestOpalHelper · 10/08/2025 07:51

I had a girl named Aoife in my year 11 years back, I genuinely mis-pronounced it first time we met, whole class including her found this very funny - so it became a gag every registration thereafter that I'd come up with a different obscure way of saying it.

Her daughter is starting year 7 in September, named Siobhan, apparently she is looking forward to what I can make out of that, few years to wait mind as I now tutor 6th form.

Was Bourbon the child's first name?

Was wondering that too. Bourbon as a surname is quite nice, Bourbon Street of New Orleans etc.

Far more likely to be named after the French Royal family or the place the child was conceived

StampOnTheGround · 10/08/2025 08:09

Definitely unprofessional, but we’re all only human and that name is ridiculous so I can’t really blame them for slipping up.

I thought ops precocious kindergartener had brought the issue to her?
'Forsooth Mater I am troubled... this public servant had the gall to show they were human, and had a personality that included HUMOUR!! I am appalled and traumatised!! Send them to the gulag!!'

An adult laughing at a child’s name, in front of a class full of children, is not ok and it’s unprofessional.
A sense of humour? Is that what your comment is supposed to be!
For people, who aren’t bullies, humour is when everyone is included, not singled out and laughed at.

Jk987 · 10/08/2025 08:12

How do you know this happened?

x2boys · 10/08/2025 08:15

Well its a pretty stupid name but that's not the child's fault and it wss very unprofessional of the teacher to laugh at it.

Summer holidays are so much fun on MN

Having once taught a Bacardi, I can empathise. But it's never right to giggle or laugh at the child just judge the parents HARD

First name or second name? There are the Bacardi family, just as there are the Cadbury’s etc

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 09/08/2025 23:37

I’ve posted this before but honest to God there was an SEN teacher at my children’s primary school called Mr Shaw Twilley. A couple of dads had to walk out of a parents evening until they could pull themselves together. The kids didn’t find it funny but the parents did.

Poor fella! 😂😂😂😂

LancashireButterPie · 10/08/2025 08:33

Different cultural background maybe?
I saw Fred off First Dates has recently got married and reportedly his wife is called "Fruitcake".
I work with a Dr who's first name is Pu.
Sometimes names that are bog standard names elsewhere, suffer in translation.
Awful to laugh at a child.

Hedgehogbrown · 10/08/2025 08:34

Why are you even asking?

That’s really sweet. As someone who has an impossible name and always had it mangled, I empathise with you both.
