Question in a pub quiz

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 06:54

Pub quiz recently, question was "We asked 100 people what would you NOT miss if you were stranded on a desert island alone - what were the 5 top answers? "

I will come back and share the answers as that's what the AIBU hinges on, but wanted to garner opinion on MN first.

All admin shit
Usernames
Passwords
Security questions/ codes
Shallow human beings

Oh yes, passwords. Sodding passwords. That definitely goes into the top 5.

I quite enjoy housework but I didn’t when the children lived at home so perhaps it’s demographic related.

EXACTLY!

Anyway...

  1. People who play music in public;
  2. Body maintenance which is aesthetic rather than for health and fitness reasons;
  3. FOMO (which is sort of ironic, I guess);
  4. Other people's smells;
  5. Other people's noises (see also 1, above).

Other people's noise would probably be top of my list. It spoils summer (noise in gardens), journeys on public transport (mobile phone calls), the library and pubs (people playing music or videos on phones), the cinema (chat, rustling sweet wrappers, phones going off)... I love my noise cancelling earphones!

I don’t do loads of housework and I’d assume the life on a desert island would be way more labour-intensive so it’s definitely not something I’d say! I’d think lugging firewood, fetching water, gutting fish and building a shelter would have me thinking longingly about sinks full of warm washing-up water and machine-washed clothes hanging on the line!

One older woman I worked with remembered the days of washing up without washing up liquid or rubber gloves. Apparently it was a greasy, laborious, hand-destroying task. Nowadays we find it a chore loading and unloading a dishwasher!

So the answers were:
Work
Bills
Traffic
People
Emails

Not anything relating to housework. I was staggered as that would bs my number 1, and depending how granular it might be my numbers 1, 2, 3.

So AIBU to be astounded that none of the top 5 answers were housework related?

Either most people dislike housework less than me or the question was asked to a population with proportionally few female adults.

I find housework easy to fit in to my life and very low stress so i guess it wouldn't be in my top 5 either!

The News
Other people's dogs
Laundry - actually housework in general
Work
Having to be polite to people I can't stand

Came back to this and really enjoying the discussion. Love the post about people assuming the desert island would have a nearby tesco express, I think I totally fell for that myself!

Also concluding most people / women (I'm happy to make that assumption since this is on MN) don't despise housework as much as me 🤷 which might explain why many people I visit have a more immaculate house than me.

I love cooking, gardening, knitting - just not cleaning.

I would not miss social media :-) I would miss a good quiz with friends though. Hopefully my phone signal would still be strong so I could download them. QuizTimeUK on Etsy have loads of quizzes, better than some pub quizzes i've been too!

Work, emails, commuting, traffic, taxes

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/09/2025 10:17

surely you’d still have to do housework keeping your little shelter area tidy and laundry in the sea water
