Question in a pub quiz

87 replies

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 06:54

Pub quiz recently, question was "We asked 100 people what would you NOT miss if you were stranded on a desert island alone - what were the 5 top answers? "

I will come back and share the answers as that's what the AIBU hinges on, but wanted to garner opinion on MN first.

OP posts:
Isitreallysohard · 08/08/2025 08:46

I wouldn't miss my phone. It would be so liberating.

DappledThings · 08/08/2025 08:47

My housework is more of the blitz then wallow till next blitz variety rather than constant drudge so less likely to occur to me as something to not miss.

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/08/2025 08:53

Housework would never occur to me, but it’s just my cat & me in a one-bedroom flat so housework is minimal, and cooking is completely on my own terms.

I’m not sure what my top 5 would be though.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 08/08/2025 08:53

I think after 100 days in the same seawater washed outfit, you'd feel a bit nostalgic for the laundry even.

Housework is a doddle if you have the time for it. Mind you on a desert island, you are going to spend most of your time fishing so it's a bit of a moot point.

OakAshRowan · 08/08/2025 09:08

Maybe housework was number 6. Plenty of people on this thread didn't mention it so it's not all that surprising it's not on the list. If you saw all the answers given and housework didn't feature at all I'd be shocked.

TheNightingalesStarling · 08/08/2025 09:31

Alternatively people listed things like washing up, hoovering etc instead of just "housework".

Superhansrantowindsor · 08/08/2025 09:34

Wouldn’t miss housework as I don’t do much of it.

Yes this could explain it.

I'm surprised friends or family weren't in the top five but maybe they come under "people".

AtomicBlondeRose · 08/08/2025 09:39

I don’t do loads of housework and I’d assume the life on a desert island would be way more labour-intensive so it’s definitely not something I’d say! I’d think lugging firewood, fetching water, gutting fish and building a shelter would have me thinking longingly about sinks full of warm washing-up water and machine-washed clothes hanging on the line!

Maybe they only asked people who like their friends and family!

😂😂😂 I somehow flipped the question even though I had already answered about things I wouldn't miss. I'm going to make another coffee...

CountryQueen · 08/08/2025 10:56

Right. Sounds like you were out with some misogynistic twats. Only worth an eyeroll mind 🙄

autienotnaughty · 08/08/2025 11:29

Mother in law
work
Bills /taxes
misogyny
trafic

autienotnaughty · 08/08/2025 11:31

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:57

So the answers were:
Work
Bills
Traffic
People
Emails

Not anything relating to housework. I was staggered as that would bs my number 1, and depending how granular it might be my numbers 1, 2, 3.

So AIBU to be astounded that none of the top 5 answers were housework related?

Either most people dislike housework less than me or the question was asked to a population with proportionally few female adults.

I wasn’t far off. Didn’t even think of housework!

I agree. It's a lazy popular kind of pub quiz question, in syndicated quizzes that landlords have bought in (or found on the internet), but it's not really knowledge or facts, of the kind that a quiz should be testing.

They do this on TV quizzes sometimes. I mean, it's obviously fair enough on Family Fortunes and Pointless, where it's the whole idea of the game; but often on shows like Tenable as well.

They had one question asking for the public's 10 favourite actors (of the 12) who had played Dr Who and the contestant happened to guess at the two that ranked 11th and 12th most popular. I mean, how could they possibly have known? How on earth is that a fair quiz question?

An actually fair, proper knowledge-based question would have been the first/last 10 to play Dr Who or the 10 with a 't' in their names or similar.

It's a pub quiz, lighten up!

Peclet · 08/08/2025 07:07

Oh I’m so dumb!!!

i thought it meant Miss. duh!

I suspect your answer is the sort of answer the OP is going to say is the point of this post

Bpickle1 · 08/08/2025 11:43

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:18

Oops!

OP is correct, it's stuff you wouldn't miss, ie stuff in your life which you don't like and would love to see gone

It looks like OP is using sock puppets?

Pub quizzes with stupid questions would be my number 1.

DappledThings · 08/08/2025 11:45

She just correcting herself. OP to mean "my original post" rather than original poster because

And the NOT was in capital letters!

And the NOT was in capital letters!

EXACTLY!

Anyway...

  1. People who play music in public;
  2. Body maintenance which is aesthetic rather than for health and fitness reasons;
  3. FOMO (which is sort of ironic, I guess);
  4. Other people's smells;
  5. Other people's noises (see also 1, above).
