Question in a pub quiz

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 06:54

Pub quiz recently, question was "We asked 100 people what would you NOT miss if you were stranded on a desert island alone - what were the 5 top answers? "

I will come back and share the answers as that's what the AIBU hinges on, but wanted to garner opinion on MN first.

work
bills
people
that's all I have

SprayWhiteDung · 08/08/2025 07:39

DappledThings · 08/08/2025 07:33

Not really a pub quiz. More an attempt at pub Family Fortunes. I wouldn't miss that

I wouldn't mind if it were billed as 'Pub Family Fortunes' - same as some pubs have Play Your Cards Right sessions.

It's just when they call it a quiz and then have a weird mix of asking what is the capital of El Salvador, who had a hit with Just Like Jesse James and then 'what do some people reckon is nice or not nice'?!

Crockof · 08/08/2025 07:39

Sex
Housework
Work

I think I would miss everything else

TheAutumnCrow · 08/08/2025 07:41

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:18

Oops!

OP is correct, it's stuff you wouldn't miss, ie stuff in your life which you don't like and would love to see gone

Jenny Powell on the radio (sorry, Jenny)
The Beautiful South, ditto
Life admin / bills
Travel delays
People moaning

Did you have to download an App or could you play on a piece if paper? All the quizzes I've ben to recently have required Apps...

It seems odd that pubs have traditionally (over the last decade or so) strictly stipulated no mobile phones - and then make you have one out prominently on your table that you use to participate.

Possibly, that is their deliberate thinking in going for irritating arbitrary poll-type questions instead, rather than pure facts that Google could tell you in two seconds?

You get more points for the getting the right answer quickest, so harder to have time to Google. Plus you can't close the app.

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:54

This was the only question of this format and generally it's a fairly good quiz so I'll excuse them that. This question was clearly bought off the Internet, as many were I guess? The question skew male which is irritating (lots on sport, and almost entirely men's sports) but I can't complain otherwise

OP posts:
BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:57

So the answers were:
Work
Bills
Traffic
People
Emails

Not anything relating to housework. I was staggered as that would bs my number 1, and depending how granular it might be my numbers 1, 2, 3.

So AIBU to be astounded that none of the top 5 answers were housework related?

Either most people dislike housework less than me or the question was asked to a population with proportionally few female adults.

I wouldn’t miss

news channels
social media
pressure to look a certain way
rat race
having to pay bills

BritBratGrot · 08/08/2025 07:58

Oh and quiz was paper&pen format

Sounds like they’ve targeted their questions to professional people doing the work commute and dealing with stressful jobs.

FinanceLPlates · 08/08/2025 08:03

Yes I was thinking that when I wrote “my” list (that is, when I imagined what other people might have responded) - if they ask mostly men then “housework” might not feature as it’s not even on their horizon… which is quite bad really

See if I wasn't working (I actually like my job but I get the not being tied to anything), didn't have to pay bills, deal with emails or people I didn't want to, and I never got stuck in any traffic, I wouldn't mind doing a bit of housework. I generally don't like it but because life is busy so it feels like it comes at the expense of free time, but if I had loads of free time and no bills to pay I wouldn't mind it.

vivainsomnia · 08/08/2025 08:05

You'd still have to do house, or more like beach, work. You'd need to keep your close environment tidy, sweep to minimise creepy crawlies around your sleeping part. You'll still need to clean the utensils you've made of wood. Keeping the fire going...

So really, likely even more house work!

Do you work?

Maybe you spend more time on most on housework?

Depends on the demographic of who was asked. In a shopping centre at midday you might get mums and retired people who would agree with you.

I work full time. I don't have a lot of time for housework and in my week it's low down on my list.

Except for traffic (I mostly WFH) I agree with the list.

Why is it not on a mans horizon?

DH does most of our housework or at least 50%. We both work full-time.

SprayWhiteDung · 08/08/2025 08:11

You never know who the '100 people we asked' are, though. They could have been careful to ensure a diverse range of people or they could just have gone to a busy place with a mainly narrow demographic.

On Pointless, they've asked about UK cities a few times and then cities in NI have been pointless (not just low-scoring, but actually pointless) - suggesting that they haven't actually asked anybody from NI.

They also have numerous questions which would be very common knowledge to almost everybody of a certain age, but which score suspiciously low - suggesting that they may sometimes ask an almost-exclusively younger demographic.

Apparently, on Family Fortunes, they just used to ask the previous week's live audience - which must have made their brand of questioning something of an incestuous ouroboros of knowledge Grin

I do work, 4 days a week in a fairly senior job, ~100k salary etc. But I enjoy my job and find it fulfilling. Not to say I'd carry it on if i won the lottery, but I detest washing up and the endless grind of the laundry plus tidying and hoovering

One of the men in the team wondered if they'd grouped work and housework together since men do one and women the other, which made me roll my eyes hard.

When starting this thread it did occur to me that there would still be some housework with a beach life, but my instant go to was 'washing up, laundry' and i was just really surprised they didn't feature in the top 5

We actually didn't put either of them down and got the 5 answers correct! But that's point because another man was hogging the answer sheet

These are friends of my brothers, I was just there for the night out and didn't know these people

OP posts:
SprayWhiteDung · 08/08/2025 08:18

Yes, I was thinking that too!

Getting, preparing and cooking food and provisions would also be an intense ongoing task that would consume a load of your time and thinking.

A lot of people have the vague assumption that a remote desert island will also have a Tesco Express nearby; just like all the people who dream of living rurally, in the middle or nowhere, but also with their own private motorway within a quarter of a mile!

Are you trying to turn this into a pub quiz having some kind of sexist bias? You'd still have housework to do wherever you lived so why would it be in the list?

Exactly. Maintaining your living space is going to remain a chore whenever you're living an independent life.

One of the men in the team wondered if they'd grouped work and housework together since men do one and women the other, which made me roll my eyes hard.

But some of what you've written - in fact a main thrust of your argument for the thread - is also based on sexist assumptions!

For all you know, they could have asked 100 professional women (and no men at all) who all have cleaners, cooks and a suite of other people to do all of the stereotypically 'female jobs' for them - whilst they go out to work full-time in stressful jobs and then unwind in the evenings and weekends by watching or playing sport!

SprayWhiteDung · 08/08/2025 08:29

cornbunting · 08/08/2025 08:24

Exactly. Maintaining your living space is going to remain a chore whenever you're living an independent life.

No flushing toilets or toilet paper either, so you'd have to make 'other arrangements' to fulfil and dispose of such basic needs - let that sink in for a moment...!

Or the female adults aren’t that concerned about housework. In my case, if the cleaner doesn’t do it, it doesn’t get done, other than fairly cursory wipedowns.
