Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

A shower in a swimming costume with no washing and no soap?

wont make a bit of difference

you are being ridiculous

This. I find it even weirder that you were monitoring how long she was in the toilet. What an annoying busy body you sound

Favourite unreasonable AIBU thread, we’ve got another one for you.

CurlewKate · 07/08/2025 07:06

Amazed at all the Mumsnetters who shower after every poo. You must have very complicated lives….

I am imagining you saying this in high pitched, outraged tones, something like Lady Button from Ghosts.

😂😂😂

Brilliant! I’m imagining that too now. I love Ghosts!

I'm just going in another room to clutch my pearls!

Chriskeela · 07/08/2025 07:27

I've never showered before getting in a pool but I do shower daily and think of myself as a clean person (and I wipe my arse til it's spotless).
Tbh, I'm not keen on swimming pools becuse I never fancy the water; much prefer swimming in sea or lakes, but god knows what's in that - plenty of fish poo for sure and probably human poo too, considering our water companies.
Keep your mouth closed and shower afterwards is my advice, whereever you prefer to swim.

dottiedodah · 07/08/2025 07:35

Thing is no pols are really 100 percent clean .even with chemicals added.if tum bugs circulating best to avoid altogether in case of infection
Also she may have problems weeing or be on her period! You don't know she was defo having a poo

FortheloveofCheesus · 07/08/2025 07:40

Fucking hell op you are a bit nuts. People don't emerge after a poo covered in shit.

  1. the anal sphinter extrudes slightly and when you finish, it closes inside, there shouldn't be loads left

  2. people do wipe you know.

  3. a rinse in a typically low pressure pool shower isn't going to do much more.

Do you realise the purpose of the rinse isn't to ensure sterility? Its more likely intended to wash of dust/sand/physical particles as these block filters etc.

The chemicals in the pool deal with bacteria.

CurlewKate · 07/08/2025 07:43

I would love the hear the poor “confronted” woman’s side of this story….

Blueblell · 07/08/2025 07:46

Yabu to have watched her in this way or said anything.

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

The ‘shower’ before entering the pool is a quick rinse to remove body creams, which leave a film on the water. It’s not a full cleansing shower. Surely you know that?

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 07/08/2025 07:53

lol🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

Cherrytree86 · 07/08/2025 07:56

YANBU, OP. It’s gross going swimming in public pools really. Another gross thing is when you see people- usually elderly men- get water in their mouth as they dip their head for a stroke and then they spit it out like some kind of turtle. Absolutely rank 🤢

MaloryJones · 07/08/2025 07:59

Boy, are you weird .

YABU, precious and frankly seem obsessive with how long she took!

Where in Canada is that?. I swim weekly and have never done this or know anyone that does.

Lol bullshit. (Source, married to a Canadian and lived in Canada for years.)

B1anche · 07/08/2025 07:59

Wolfpa · 07/08/2025 06:31

you have no idea if she was having a poo, for all you know she could have been engrossed with something on her phone while she was there.

what were you trying to achieve by calling her out?

public pools are generally cesspits the amount of wee you swim through is phenomenal. One woman’s shower isn’t going to make a difference.

Exactly, when it go to the pool, I pop in the loo and spend ages in front of the mirror trying to fit my hair under my swim hat so that it is 'just right' and to reduce the chance of water getting in. I would be mortified if someone was outside timing me and jumping to the conclusion that I was having a massive shit (and then leaving it smeared on my arse).

Jorgua · 07/08/2025 08:00

Tontostitis · 07/08/2025 06:36

I think it's to rinse off extra sunblock moisturizer deodorant more than to clean the body.

Yep agreed.

cheesycheesy · 07/08/2025 08:00

You do know youre swimming in a load of piss anyway? Babies and kids just wee freely in these pools.

MrBallensWife · 07/08/2025 08:01

You sound ridiculous.
Mind your business and stop policing what others do and for how long they do it.

With the pool full of kids peeing in it this would be the least of my concerns

Aout25 · 06/08/2025 23:34

I hope you don't flush them?!

Well think of the benefits if she did, you could get a plumber round to fix it and time him in the toilet as well!

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

And yet you think a minute under a shower with no soap and a swimming costume on is sufficient? I would be more concerned about your general hygiene in this case!
