I microwave salad

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 19:35

Yes thats right, I do.

I havent got time to wait for things to come up to room temperature and HATE fridge cold food.

Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting, all the watercress I just bought yesterday looks like its perished because it might have semi frozen, anyway thats for another thread

But the gist is, I had to put my salad in the microwave for 10 seconds, I tested it after 5 and it still wasnt the right temperature.

I cant stand cold cucumber, cold olives, cold mayo, cold chicken.

Okay?

Devilsmommy · 04/08/2025 19:36

So you're a weirdo then 😂

Soonenough · 04/08/2025 19:36

Sorry. Think this is weird. Maybe leave what you want out until you eat it to give it a chance to be room temperature.

CharnwoodFire · 04/08/2025 19:37

And I thought I was bananas for cutting my salads up with a pair of scissors.

BreezyPeachGoose · 04/08/2025 19:37

"eccentric" 🤣

cyvguhb · 04/08/2025 19:38

And? Are you asking a question?

Youdontseehow · 04/08/2025 19:40

@soupyspoon I can’t eat salad straight out the fridge so usually leave it out about 30 mins before eating. Can’t imagine actually microwaving it though but hey - if it works for you!

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 19:41

The voting is unanimous. I am completely unreasonable.

Well you need to sort your fridge out. However ripe tomatoes should always be at room temperature. Chilling tomatoes inhibits both their flavour and ability to take on flavour.

I challenge anyone to slice some ripe tomatoes and sprinkle with salt, pepper, oregano, dill and olive oil and tell me room temperature is not better.

If I could store everything out of the fridge I would

Eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, jars of things, butter, cheese

Everything is better having avoided a fridge. But it is summer time and I dont have a sort of pantry area.

I do this sometimes. Likewise with yoghurt, cottage cheese and similar. I like all these things to be at room temperature. Much tastier that way, and why wait for them to warm up unaided.

Mind you, I also used to dry damp school uniform items in the microwave when my laundry planning skills went awry. I hardly ever burnt them, though.

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 19:44

I had to leave a burrata out of the fridge for an hour at the weekend in order to consider it just about ok to eat.

When I worked in a fruit and veg shop nothing was in a fridge. It only seems to be supermarkets that do it now. You can keep it out wrapped up but not in plastic.

BMW6 · 04/08/2025 19:54

I think your fridge is fucked.

But why don't you get your salad ingredients out of the fridge for 1/2 hour before eating to gey to room temperature?

MargotMoon · 04/08/2025 19:57

I keep butter out of the fridge year-round. I just put half a pack in the butter dish at a time and keep the rest in the fridge. Eggs as well, they never see the inside of the fridge.

RhaenysRocks · 04/08/2025 19:57

Im the total opposite. If I want lunch after I've shopped I have to wait 30mins for the cucumber and tomatoes etc to NOT be room temp. Can't stand tepid food.

LittleBobbyDazzler · 04/08/2025 19:59

Things that aren't illegal but should be.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/08/2025 20:00

One of my favourite ever MN comments was somebody who had kept and stored their placenta in the fridge long term and remarked that it was "next to the eggs".

The FIRST comment was "but why are you keeping eggs in the fridge????"

Priorities, people.

My eggs and butter are currently out of the fridge

I had a few weeks recently when we had that very very hot weather when the butter went back in the fridge but currently its a nice dipping consistency for me to dip biscuits into.

Which I would never do obviously.

Its not long enough to get to that temperature and its just too long, I havent got time to faff around.

My mother used to Milton ours when we were kids, I was 18 and had left home before I realised salad, soft fruits and unwrapped sweets did not need to taste like Milton.
