I microwave salad

Yes thats right, I do.

I havent got time to wait for things to come up to room temperature and HATE fridge cold food.

Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting, all the watercress I just bought yesterday looks like its perished because it might have semi frozen, anyway thats for another thread

But the gist is, I had to put my salad in the microwave for 10 seconds, I tested it after 5 and it still wasnt the right temperature.

I cant stand cold cucumber, cold olives, cold mayo, cold chicken.

I prefer room temp too, but that has never crossed my mind. And although I understand the logic, I just don't know if I could do it.

DappledThings · 04/08/2025 20:06

How do you feel about hot food going the other way? I'm with you and don't like stuff too cold but not too hot either. I would never warm a plate. Food that is served hot is always too hot to start eating for ages, don't want it to stay too hot.

Same with drinks. I'd never put ice in a drink or keep any drinks in the fridge. But hot drinks take forever to cool down too. I like to make a cup of tea just before I go and get in the shower so it's a nice drinkable temperature by the time I come back downstairs

Well you need to sort your fridge out. However ripe tomatoes should always be at room temperature. Chilling tomatoes inhibits both their flavour and ability to take on flavour.

I challenge anyone to slice some ripe tomatoes and sprinkle with salt, pepper, oregano, dill and olive oil and tell me room temperature is not better.

100% I never refrigerate tomatoes. Love the smell in my kitchen as I always get vine ripened. Heaven!

Beamur · 04/08/2025 20:08

I often have salad with something hot so it combats the too cold food thing 😄

It takes a big leap of faith. I didnt do it for a long time but now Im out and proud, and I feel the need to share this information for people who dont know that its possible

Its quite liberating.

Have you definitely got your fridge temperatures the right way round? The numbers mean the amount of cooling, so min/1 is lowest cooling i.e. warmest fridge temperature and max/highest number is max cooling. Always confuses me.

ClaredeBear · 04/08/2025 20:10

Not thought of doing that before. Thanks for the tip.

My mother used to Milton ours when we were kids, I was 18 and had left home before I realised salad, soft fruits and unwrapped sweets did not need to taste like Milton.

I remember the Milton adverts that had 'safe enough to wash a lettuce in'

That goldilocks story was written about people like us. I really do like it just right. I dont have tolerance for too hot, or too cold. Too many burnt lips, tongue and roof of my mouth to be complacent nowadays.

I think your fridge is fucked.

But why don't you get your salad ingredients out of the fridge for 1/2 hour before eating to gey to room temperature?

Or it could be in the wrong location?

My DP has quite lengthy opinions on optimal fridge locations and don’t we all know it, Gavin.

AuntMarch · 04/08/2025 20:17

I might, might try it tomorrow.

I'm not so sure we are on the same side now though. Tepid tea is worse than cold cucumber

I know what he would say. I know already

Its out the back. In an uninsulated room. So it gets warm in there in the summer, so its probably gone into overdrive.

But it is what it is. I have to store leafy things in the door which is the warmest part. I bet Gavin knows that though.

Yesterday I forgot and put them in the veg drawer, which is the coldest bit. And the cucumber got a bit funny about it too.

No, no, not tepid. Not tepid. Drinkable. Hot, but not too hot.

Theres literally like a 30 second window when the tea is just right. Theres a lot of wasted tea due to this.

DappledThings · 04/08/2025 20:22

Hard agree! I want to taste the tea. If it's too hot, or a cold drink or food is too cold I can't taste the actual food, only its painful temperature

FalconUnicorn · 04/08/2025 20:22

I also microwave salads for 15 seconds so I think it’s perfectly normal. I also microwave ice cream though.

Yeah I do the ice cream thing sometimes.

DoYouReally · 04/08/2025 20:25

The salad is too chilled but you aren't chilled enough to wait for it to come to room temperature? OK then!

Forgive me, for my radical suggestion, but just take it out of the fridge earlier than you currently do.

You're pushing it a bit there.
