I microwave salad

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 19:35

Yes thats right, I do.

I havent got time to wait for things to come up to room temperature and HATE fridge cold food.

Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting, all the watercress I just bought yesterday looks like its perished because it might have semi frozen, anyway thats for another thread

But the gist is, I had to put my salad in the microwave for 10 seconds, I tested it after 5 and it still wasnt the right temperature.

I cant stand cold cucumber, cold olives, cold mayo, cold chicken.

The salad is too chilled but you aren't chilled enough to wait for it to come to room temperature? OK then!

Forgive me, for my radical suggestion, but just take it out of the fridge earlier than you currently do.

but I might not know I want it earlier.

Hang on, are people putting tomatoes and potatoes in the fridge? Why?

Horses for courses and all that. I worked as a waitress in a pub (donkeys) years back and toasted prawn salad sandwiches were very popular! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Edited

Hmmm.

What do you mean by this?

I hope you mean an actual toasted sandwich and not..... horror of horrors..... a sandwich made with toast rather than bread.

If theres one thing guaranteed to really rile me up, its someone calling something a 'toasted cheese sandwich' when that something is actually a cheese sandwich made with toast instead of bread.

It makes me absolutely furious.

You've set me off now.

Really, @soupyspoon? I do mean actual prawn salad sandwiches which were made and then toasted.

The voting is unanimous. I am completely unreasonable.

I haven’t voted (the option isn’t there on the app) but I do the same with tomatoes and cucumber. Hot baked potato with freezing cold cucumber is not good. A quick turn in the meecrowaey sorts it right out.

My husband has “roasted cheese on toast”. It’s just cheese on toast. He says if it were just cheese on toast, the cheese isn’t melted under the grill. I said who the hell does that, but ok, call it grilled cheese. Nope, according to that’s (what I would call) a cheese toastie (made in a toastie machine).

So to be clear “roasted” means grilled, and “grilled” means sandwich toastered. It’s just as well he’s pretty. 😆

Well you need to sort your fridge out. However ripe tomatoes should always be at room temperature. Chilling tomatoes inhibits both their flavour and ability to take on flavour.

I challenge anyone to slice some ripe tomatoes and sprinkle with salt, pepper, oregano, dill and olive oil and tell me room temperature is not better.

Thank you for the tip. I’ll take my tomatoes out the fridge and give it a go.

Not potatoes, but my tomatoes go in the fridge, they last longer in there.

I also microwave salads for 15 seconds so I think it’s perfectly normal. I also microwave ice cream though.

My husband blows on it. “To warm it up” WTAF.

As I said….pretty.

You wont regret it. Put them on a sunny windowsill before you eat them too.

I often put cold things in the microwave on defrost for a short while to bring to room temperature or a bit above, I don't like fridge cold food either and don't think about getting it out well in advance. Whatever works.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/08/2025 21:11

Do you have to adjust the microwave timings between little salad garnshes and massive salads?

I think for a massive salad you would have to oven cook it really.

For my salad tonight I had to be careful that I timed it right. I dont keep mayo in the fridge, so that was a bit of a red herring in my OP. But neither do I like 'warm' mayo, so there is a careful balance.

So I microwaved, then mixed in my mayo, then added on my olives. I dont like warmish olives either but I also dont like them cold.

Its really quite complicated cooking. I should do a cook book. Hopefully a TV series would follow.

Plus in case anyone is wondering, and I know you are, if I am having a cheese based salad, I of course cant microwave that, I dont want melted cheese on my salad leaves.

And I thought I was bananas for cutting my salads up with a pair of scissors.

I do this too. Scissors are the easiest way to cut many foods - pizza being a classic example. My husband saws back and forth with the pizza wheel for ages 🤷🏼‍♀️

I wish this had been "I microwave salad - AMA" as for once it might have been an interesting one.

However, you say "Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting" - is that the issue in itself? Only I've spent almost 29 years with a man who was totally, totally convinced that the numbers on the dial of a fridge related to temeprature, and that setting one was one degree centigrade, as opposed to being the warmest of all the settings. It took years to win him over.

Fast forward to 2014 when we invested in a fridge-freezer that has a push-button control where the numbers are, in fact, related to temperature, and therefore setting two (the lowest it has) is liable to reduce everything to almost frozen.

It's made even worse by the fact we have two fridges, one with numbers and one with temperature. The work I have to do to ensure one fridge is left on setting and one on six degrees knows no end as he is inclined to forget and fiddle accordingly.

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 21:27

Ok, AMA, Im happy to oblige
