I microwave salad

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 19:35

Yes thats right, I do.

I havent got time to wait for things to come up to room temperature and HATE fridge cold food.

Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting, all the watercress I just bought yesterday looks like its perished because it might have semi frozen, anyway thats for another thread

But the gist is, I had to put my salad in the microwave for 10 seconds, I tested it after 5 and it still wasnt the right temperature.

I cant stand cold cucumber, cold olives, cold mayo, cold chicken.

I used to have to microwave yogurts for my son when he was a baby. Just a few seconds - he wouldn't eat them if they were cold.

I knew a lady at work that did that. I used to leave my sandwiches out so they would be room temperature. I didn't even mind the bread going a bit hard. But mayo to me has to be cold or it's really disgusting. It's not right on hot things like burgers.

Zov · 04/08/2025 21:39

@soupyspoon

Yay congratulations! you're going to get food poisoning. Looking forward to getting salmonella poisoning and listeria are ya?!

Good grief! 😆

More people get food poisoning from salad - especially warm salad - than from dodgy meat.

Yes also Ive just remembered that the cat never eats straight out the fridge either, she doesnt like it.

Im no comparing your son to a cat by the way.

Im just saying.

I keep butter out of the fridge year-round. I just put half a pack in the butter dish at a time and keep the rest in the fridge. Eggs as well, they never see the inside of the fridge.

I do the same. And a potato never darkens my fridge - they are supposed to be in a cool, dark place not a fridge.

He was an odd child. Turned out lovely though - and has no feline tendencies.

I feel I do owe a bit of an explanation for honesty and transparency's sake. (Ive just been reading a thread about FOI requests so its put me in the mood to be open)

I do actually keep chocolate in the fridge and I do actually eat it cold, straight from the fridge.

Sorry if you're labouring under any misapprehensions. Hopefully that has put you straight.

I am with upu on not liking my salad fridge cold but i don't own a microwave 😕 i have to remember to take things out if the fridge for a bit 1st.
I am the same with fruit, esp soft things like raspberries, strawberries, cherries, melon and grapes. I have been known to put grapes in a bowl of warm water for a minute to warm up.

I take salad to work quite often and the fridge there is very cold so I always take it out 20 mins or so before I eat it .
Some bugger ( been kind I know ) thinks I have left it by accident out so keeps putting it back in the fridge for me

mondaytosunday · 04/08/2025 22:00

So you can leave all the veg out several hours. Just the chicken needs to be kept cold.

OtherS · 04/08/2025 22:01

I wash mine half an hour or so before I want it then put it in the spinner to drain as I don't want soggy salad. So even if it were frozen solid, it would be room temperature by the time I wanted it.

Oh god. Im so sorry to hear this.

My thoughts are with you.

Can we set up a gofundme for the microwave, I feel that this is a vital piece of kitchen equipment for you.

(actually I have an OH who is obsessed with things being in the fridge and is always putting things back in. Urgh)

I also microwave salads for 15 seconds so I think it’s perfectly normal. I also microwave ice cream though.

Me too, both of those things.

PiggyPigalle · 04/08/2025 22:18

I do as well. The worst salad vegetable to eat freezing cold is beetroot. I microwave everything for 20 secs than add tomatoes which aren't refrigerated.
Same with fruit. Think of picking everything from the garden on a summer day, that's the temperature I like.

soupyspoon · 04/08/2025 22:18

Im going to bed now, I need to let all that salmonella and listeria ferment in my tummy overnight

Please leave your microwave and salad queries for me and I will answer tomorrow.

If Im still alive.

Thankyou for your kind and comforting words @soupyspoon , a go fund me would be much appreciated.

Now a most important question, do you prefer your bed sheets to be warm or cool ?

I think for a massive salad you would have to oven cook it really.

For my salad tonight I had to be careful that I timed it right. I dont keep mayo in the fridge, so that was a bit of a red herring in my OP. But neither do I like 'warm' mayo, so there is a careful balance.

So I microwaved, then mixed in my mayo, then added on my olives. I dont like warmish olives either but I also dont like them cold.

Its really quite complicated cooking. I should do a cook book. Hopefully a TV series would follow.

Plus in case anyone is wondering, and I know you are, if I am having a cheese based salad, I of course cant microwave that, I dont want melted cheese on my salad leaves.

Hmm, now I do like melted cheese on my salad. Haven’t got a microwave but I could do this at work.. come to think of it I have microwaved salad at work, so it’s not too cold for my leftover pasta or whatever

rv24 · 04/08/2025 22:57

I put a glass of coke in the microwave for 60seconds then let it stand until flat. Hate cold fizzy drinks!

everardshutthatdoor · 04/08/2025 23:28

l hear you with FF freezing everything, I have an integrated AEG FF which does this and has from new. Apparently modern fridges work on cirulating the air so you can't have anything touching the walls or top. Oh, and the salad drawer isn't for salad, it's a crisper drawer to get things really cold. In the summer it goes into overdrive and we get frozen cucumbers.

I am mourning my 20 yr old American style FF which behaved perfectly and kept everything in tip top condition for weeks.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 04/08/2025 23:31

Eggs should not be kept in fridge. We keep the butter we are using on the table in a butter dish. I eat cheese every day and I keep it out of the fridge to mature. Tomatoes are not kept in fridge either.

SmellyBumMum · 04/08/2025 23:41

I take a yoghurt to work in the morning and by lunchtime it’s at perfect room temperature! Hate the cold chill from them straight out the fridge! 😆
