I microwave salad

Yes thats right, I do.

I havent got time to wait for things to come up to room temperature and HATE fridge cold food.

Plus my fridge is too cold even on the lowest setting, all the watercress I just bought yesterday looks like its perished because it might have semi frozen, anyway thats for another thread

But the gist is, I had to put my salad in the microwave for 10 seconds, I tested it after 5 and it still wasnt the right temperature.

I cant stand cold cucumber, cold olives, cold mayo, cold chicken.

I don’t think I’ve ever worried about the temperature of salad vegetables but I definitely wouldn’t microwave them.

Thankyou for your kind and comforting words @soupyspoon , a go fund me would be much appreciated.

Now a most important question, do you prefer your bed sheets to be warm or cool ?

I think generally speaking cool

I put a glass of coke in the microwave for 60seconds then let it stand until flat. Hate cold fizzy drinks!

Flat coke is lovely.

l hear you with FF freezing everything, I have an integrated AEG FF which does this and has from new. Apparently modern fridges work on cirulating the air so you can't have anything touching the walls or top. Oh, and the salad drawer isn't for salad, it's a crisper drawer to get things really cold. In the summer it goes into overdrive and we get frozen cucumbers.

I am mourning my 20 yr old American style FF which behaved perfectly and kept everything in tip top condition for weeks.

Oh its not just me then, thats good. I want to replace it to be honest as its not big enough (to store my massive salads in)

And I was thinking last night that I shouldnt put salad in the drawer at all and have a big change around.

The rest of the fridge is pretty much cheese though. I dont want that getting ruined.

@everardshutthatdoor , I have the same problem with my FF , if anything touchs the back it gets frozen and a big chunk of ice forms around it so I rip whatever packaging is touching it while trying to get me food out. Bread and fruit are the worst affected.

It has a built in water dispenser that is to small to fit anything other than a small tumbler under it .
And the doors are hung the wrong way round normally you can change the way the doors open but the thread is buggered on the nut .
And one of the frezzer draws drops out of its runner every time I move it and its a swine to get back in place .

Grrrrrrr, ok rant over .

everardshutthatdoor · 05/08/2025 18:28

This may not help the OP but after the developer of our new build replaced the fridge freezer they installed three times we just gave up and got a cheap freestanding Beko to keep in the garage. It works just fine.

OP I am totally on your side. Every morning I microwave whatever berries I am having to add to my breakfast of yoghurt and granola. I don't microwave the yoghurt though but I am considering it now.
If I'm having melon, mango, grapes, whatever for my pudding at night, they have to come out of the fridge at least an hour before I want to eat them. I can't stand cold fruit, it tastes of nothing.
I also like warm flat drinks.
And if I ever eat wotsits, I open them early so they can go a bit stale before I eat them.

A woman of taste, particularly about the wotsits!!!

I feel sorry for you

OP, sometimes when I make my homemade lasagne, I will sit my portion on top of salad. I love a warm-ish salad. In fact, I dislike anything too cold. And would only ever drink water at room temperature.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 06/08/2025 11:11

Not weird at all. Cold tomatoes are awful. As is cucumber. The flavour comes through more if it's a few degrees warmer. I cut open a big tomato yesterday and microwaved it for 10 seconds. Made it pleasant to eat and didn't just taste cold.

If I could store everything out of the fridge I would

Eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, jars of things, butter, cheese

Everything is better having avoided a fridge. But it is summer time and I dont have a sort of pantry area.

I never put eggs, tomatoes, butter or potatoes in the fridge. They all live quite happily at room temp, even in summer, plus it’s easier to gauge cooking times for eggs that aren’t fridge cold.

And I’ve no idea why anyone would put tomatoes in the fridge - such a ubiquitous Brit thing to have rock hard, flavourless, scentless tomatoes straight out of the fridge. Just put them in a bowl on the side.

Microwaving lettuce is a bit niche though, to be fair.

zingally · 06/08/2025 12:01

But it goes a funny texture when microwaved, surely?

That being said, I know what you mean about temperature. My fridge is very cold, and I give my morning cereal a 20 second blast in the micro because otherwise the milk is too cold!

I also much prefer room temperature food.

Part of my work involves visiting different sites all day. I'm often asked if I'd like to leave my packed lunch in the fridge, but never! I want it room temperature! A cold sandwich is not my thing At All.

nomas · 06/08/2025 12:03

Take the food out of the fridge a couple
of hours before your going to eat it.

Job done.

OldandTired66 · 06/08/2025 12:10

I do it too, much prefer room temp. Same for soft fruit. I warm in microwave on low setting for about 15 seconds. Because I always forget to get it out of the fridge earlier.
