Why is he getting these extras though?
What does it mean, their hands are tied?

because in general the prison system is favoured more towards rehabilitation of the prisoner's.

SisterTeatime · 04/08/2025 18:11

He’s never going to be released, that’s his punishment, and he richly deserves it.

If you lock people up with no windows etc they will literally go mad and that is not going to help anyone.

I think there are significant challenges for the prison and judicial systems with more very dangerous men serving long minimum terms and whole life terms in this country. Prisons need to be able to manage these men with tools they have available.

They aren’t ‘extras’

he will have bought the Xbox himself , they aren’t just given

hrs enhanced because he behaves and he’s entitled to it. You can’t pick and choose which prisoners get what

Really. You’d give someone like Bellfield a pencil or a pen unsupervised?

remember the scene in John Wick

He won't see them. He will be segregated for his own safety.

Why do you think he will be segregated? It’s not allowed without good reason and certainly can’t be for long!

there was an exception for maudsley

The costs point is leg, but meanwhile campaigning to make our justice better is something tangible that death penalty supporters could start doing today.

But none of them are interested in justice. They'd be scribbling cock and balls within 30 seconds of the meeting starting.

You might think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 04/08/2025 18:16

PassingStranger · 04/08/2025 16:37

Very little.

No

because when prisoners have nothing they tend to get bored and cause problems for staff.

do you think staff should be assaulted?

Mumptynumpty · 04/08/2025 17:57

I work across several acute psychiatric wards and if he's not under a mental health act then I don't see the relevance.

The way we treat prisoners is not because we believe they are forgiven but because WE are a compassionate society.

Whilst you may wish to deny this person tiny privileges, which is the whole systems currency, you also wish the same for every prisoner - some with horrific histories themselves. I worked for many years in forensic mental health wards where the majority of people had been unwell for years, with terrible childhoods and no security or loving family. I worked hard to get them working, privileges, and discharges because we live in a compassionate society.

We value freedom and this most prized possession is denied to prisoners. Small privileges support the system to reduce the cost of housing them and provide opportunities for rehabilitation for many prisoners who WILL be released at some stage.

You worked there, you were not trapped in one.

I'm sure the families of his victims don't really want to read this?

What's this all about. People on whole life sentences are meant to have the bare minimum

🙄😫😢

He’s in jail with zero freedom. So what if he gets a fry up.

Wingedharpy · 04/08/2025 18:18

You need a carrot on the end of that stick OP.

JamesMacGill · 04/08/2025 17:07

In Bellfield’s case yes, I would.

But you have to have the same punishment for all convicted of the same crime and history has taught us some are wrongly convicted and we're innocent...so once you become the appointed torturer are you happy to live with effectively vomiting the same crime? It's easy to pick a certain case but to be just you must apply it to all even if later they were innocent sons or daughters...even your own innocent ones.

Waitingfordoggo · 04/08/2025 18:18

@cramptramp That doesn’t take into account people’s hobbies and preferences. No doubt some of the inmates love art more than they love video games. To them, a notebook and pencil would be a really treat! I thought you didn’t want them to have any treats? It’s weird that you’d allow books but not an X-Box. What’s the difference?

I don’t care what Bellfield and his ilk get in prison. I never have to think about him because he is in there and will be till he dies. We’re all free to get on with our lives and ignore his existence while he plays XBox and eats poor quality fry ups for the rest of his life. Sounds like a pretty fucking miserable existence to me.

bombastix · 04/08/2025 18:20

I agree, it's actually pretty irresponsible. He'll find out and he'll love it. But it's more important to get those clicks.

Yes, entitled. As an enhanced prisoner.

3678194b · 04/08/2025 18:25

The problem with the death penalty is the likes of Ruth Ellis and James Hanratty and others. I think theirs were very sad stories and they didn't deserve that. Easy to say in retrospect.

So instead we have whole life incarceration. Sadly these prisoners are human (although that's questionable) we have to do something with them. They need to be 'managed' for the sake of others, not particularly just for themselves. In many ways removal of freedom is worse than any other alternative.

UpDo · 04/08/2025 17:55

I'm sure you'd be fine with a job that involved just lethally jabbing people. There are, however, quite a few steps that have to be taken to bring a dangerous prisoner to the jabber, and subdue them sufficiently for it to be safe to jab. Those are the ones people are talking about. You know, the sort that involve taking on all the physical risks of assault. You might not like those quite so much.

A poisoned dart shot through the peep hole window in the door should do the trick.

Or maybe we should paralyse their arms? Wouldn’t be so dangerous then, would they? Couldn’t operate an X Box either : win/win

PassingStranger · 04/08/2025 16:33

Why is he getting these extras though?
What does it mean, their hands are tied?

There will be a set of rules in prison to encourage good behaviour especially in the face of chronic staff shortages.

if you meet standards of behaviour then you’ll get xyz rewards on each tier etc

hands are tied as the system needs to be honoured otherwise becomes meaningless and you don’t get any buy in or engagement from prisoners and it becomes dangerous and impossible to manage.

Even if we assume for the sake of argument they don't already know, why have you presented this as an either/or?

DiscoBeat · 04/08/2025 18:29

There has to be safety for the prison staff, so some incentives for good behaviour are a good idea. He is still locked up in a grim environment.

Ah yes, 'we'. What part do you envisage taking in this process, and how much risk to your person will you be shouldering? This will, of course, include all the time he's in custody before the subduing process, when he knows it's a risk ahead of him. Let's hear more about these plans.

Apologies actually meant Ruth Ellis and Derek Bentley! Sad cases.
