To feel really embarassed?

I went to Lidl today with my little one. Got some bits and then went to the self service bit. My card declined and then I realised that I had frozen my card on the app earlier in the day. Typically, my phone had died so I couldn't get onto my app. A shop keeper shouted to another asking them to go over as my card declined. I saw one colleague look at another and then laugh and smirk whilst looking over at me. I feel really daft, I know it's my fault but I had had a stressful day and completely forgot my card was frozen. Everyone was looking and I feel so embarrassed that the shop assistants were laughing. Aibu to feel like reporting them for that behavior and also to not shop there anymore.

It happens, sometimes cards get declined - I’d honestly not give it another thought.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 03/08/2025 23:01

Cards getting declined is really common, I very much doubt everyone was staring at you and laughing at you for it, maybe your brain is just in overdrive. It’s not that big of a deal, if you really think the shop assistants were just laughing at you then report them but I imagine you are over thinking it

butwhatthen · 03/08/2025 23:02

I really feel like they weren’t laughing because your card declined, it happens so often for a variety of reasons.
If they are working on the till in lidl they aren’t making millions themselves, why would they judge you even if they assumed you had no money in the bank?

SummerEve · 03/08/2025 23:02

Honestly forget it - I guarantee everyone else has!

SeagullFreeZone · 03/08/2025 23:03

Who would you report them to?

SeagullFreeZone · 03/08/2025 23:04

Also Lidl won’t care if you don’t shop there anymore.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 03/08/2025 23:05

Happened to me yesterday, I just let people go in front while I unfroze my card. And said it very loudly so everyone knew I had the money and was fixing it. Did you unfreeze it to pay or run away? I get it tho, it feels horrible but I bet it’s happened to most people fo whatever reason

OpalFruit1 · 03/08/2025 23:05

SeagullFreeZone · 03/08/2025 23:03

Who would you report them to?

Just to the customer complaints email for Lidl. Only because it really did seem as though they were laughing at me. Because the lady on the tills shouted for another colleague to go over and said the reason, and then the shop assistant looked over with a smirk on his face to her and laughed and then looked back to me. He wasn't stood with anyone so I can't see what else he would have been laughing about

I know they won't. I just meant for myself

It’s embarrassing but it happens. There’s no way you can prove they were laughing at you, and I’m not sure why you’d make someone’s life that little more difficult to make
you feel better. I’d be more annoyed about traipsing to the shops only to have to traipse all the way back with something to pay with.

Tagyoureit · 03/08/2025 23:07

Im on the fence.

I dont think the staff behaved professionally if thats what really happened.

However, you cancelled the card then toddled off shopping with the same card on the same day.... really??

My card was cancelled by the bank last Tuesday (fraud activity) and im feeling the repercussions of it every day since because of how often I use my card and where the details are saved etc.

Sorry, but how can you honestly cancel a card in the morning and then go shopping with it in the afternoon?? It honestly makes no sense!

I would have, but typically my phone had no battery as I went to go onto the app to do it. Was so embarrassing because the self service has one of those new things that only let you out with a receipt. So we had to go all the way around and felt like people were looking.

Who would you report them to?

There’s a special department for that. I’m sure they’ll be in the phone book.

It’s the Corned Beef Inspectors ( Frozen Cards Division ) ( subsection 3c ‘Smirking Staff at Lidl )

They tend to come down very heavily on this sort of thing.

😂

I didn't fully cancel. Just froze it on the app as I thought I lost it. I hadn't lost it and it turned up but then I completely forgot to unfreeze it on the app.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 03/08/2025 23:09

Oh sorry you did say that. Oh god yeah I know what you mean. It feels awful but honestly all anyone would be thinking was that they feel bad for you, not laughing (apart from maybe the dick staff but who cares about them)

PennywisePoundFoolish · 03/08/2025 23:09

Don't they normally wear headsets in Lidl? Maybe there was some banter going on it. Not saying that would be professional, just it's quite likely they weren't laughing at you

It could have been any type of “in joke” that colleagues have with each other. You really don’t know they were laughing at you, will complaining actually achieve anything.

So it is all on you then?

Take this one on chin, then!

Build up your resilience.

You fucked up, got yourself into an embarrassing situation, and got embarrassed.

Time to move on

ClawsandEffect · 03/08/2025 23:13

Not at all surprised about Lidl staff being unpleasant. I had a racist encounter with a Lidl member of staff, accusing me of shop lifting when I clearly was holding a receipt in my hands.

No apology. Just walked away from me once she'd checked it. No coincidence that I was the only POC in the shop.

I said in my OP it was my fault and that I'd had a stressful day. But the reaction made it feel worse.

What are you hoping to achieve with the complaint? Disciplinary action against the employees? A voucher for your next shop? Because it’s unlikely to result in either. It’ll be a “he said, she said” scenario as you cannot prove they were laughing at you. Move on. Life is going to get tougher than this.

And, as an adult, these things happen.

Do they make us feel like shit and cringe for days to come (or years!)! OMG!! Yes they do!!

But what else do you expect to keep you up in 20 years time, when you lay in bed, all comfy, warm, just nodding off and THEN THIS MEMORY!! MWAH HA HA!!

Honestly, the staff wont even recognise you next week!

You'll be ok xx

JockTamsonsBairns · 03/08/2025 23:26

Lidl checkout staff will see plenty cards declined daily, it's really not something that unusual that it would cause laughter.

StMarie4me · 03/08/2025 23:27

No. One. Cares.

Truly. Just forget it.
