To feel really embarassed?

I went to Lidl today with my little one. Got some bits and then went to the self service bit. My card declined and then I realised that I had frozen my card on the app earlier in the day. Typically, my phone had died so I couldn't get onto my app. A shop keeper shouted to another asking them to go over as my card declined. I saw one colleague look at another and then laugh and smirk whilst looking over at me. I feel really daft, I know it's my fault but I had had a stressful day and completely forgot my card was frozen. Everyone was looking and I feel so embarrassed that the shop assistants were laughing. Aibu to feel like reporting them for that behavior and also to not shop there anymore.

I know how it feels, I went shopping in Lidl, got a full basket and got to the till to find I'd left my card at home. My excuse is I'm in my 70s and was looking after 2 GC and was a bit frazzled. I was lucky as the assistant was really nice, put my basket on one side while I dashed (as much as a 71 year old with arthritic hip and baby in buggy and big brother being awkward can dash) home to get card. When I got back they'd printed out something when I couldn't pay and just put that through and I paid. I did feel a fool but they were nice and helpful which made all the difference.

Daffodilsarefading · 04/08/2025 08:36

You have no idea what they were laughing at. I wouldn’t complain, they will just deny it and you will look like a nutter.
Maybe they are fed up of having to deal with all the put backs this causes.
Move on.

tuvamoodyson · 04/08/2025 08:42

I have NEVER known so many people who want to report someone for some non event, in this case, for OP’s own stupidity!! I’ll probably be reported to MN now for ‘victim blaming!!!!!’ 🙄

Adhdalien · 04/08/2025 08:46

A card declining is such a non issue. I’d be very surprised if they’d been laughing at you.

Renamedyetagain · 04/08/2025 08:47

No offence, OP, but this sounds remarkably like me and I have ADHD. The chaos of forgetting to unfreeze a card or charge your phone, the over sensitivity to random events and ruminating after obsessively.....something to think about?

DiggingHoles · 04/08/2025 08:52

No need to feel embarrassed OP. This happens all the time. I had a card declined while I was trying to pay for full cart load of groceries during a busy shopping time. Apparently, I had gotten skimmed earlier and the bank blocked my card, but hadn't contacted me about it. It was really confusing and stressful.

I doubt anyone was laughing at you. These things are always stressful, as you don't know exactly what is going on or how to fix it on the spot.

Give yourself some grace and realize this will probably happen again in the future at some point.

Thingsthatgo · 04/08/2025 08:53

They were probably not actually laughing at you - because a card being declined is not an unusual or funny situation for a supermarket worker. It’s a very mundane situation that happens many, many times a day. More likely they had some kind of in-joke between themselves about who’s turn it was to help or similar, because they are bored at work. No, it’s not particularly professional, but it’s not a big deal either. Apart from the frustration at not being able to buy the groceries you need, it’s not a situation worth any head space.

TheGriffle · 04/08/2025 08:54

This happened to me in Tesco. I had phone battery to unfreeze my card but their internet is so outstandingly shocking I couldn’t do it while stood at the till. I offered to put the shopping back which they declined, went and sat in my car and it took over half an hour for it to register on my Apple Pay that I had unfrozen it when I managed to get a smidge of Internet. Then I had to go and do the whole shop again.

Confusdworriedmum · 04/08/2025 09:03

What are you going to say in your complaint? That someone laughed but you don't know if it was aimed at you? What are you expecting to happen?
Nothing will happen because it's a non event. Even if they do speak to the staff member they'll probably deny it as they'll have forgotten about it by now
I think you should just try and forget it and move on. As has been said it happens to everyone.

Clarasmum444 · 04/08/2025 09:13

Are you sure they were laughing at you? It happens a least once a day where I work which is less than 1/4 the size of lidl! I don't think anything of it, neither do my colleagues, its a non issue. I just feel bad if they have to leave without what they came in for.

Oh! My card gets declined all the time. Like, every week.

Coz I manage my money in a particular way where I have a separate debit card that I take out with me each day that has a budget allocated to it to cover my impulse buys (chocolate bars etc).

I don't look at the balance, I just go to the till with my chocolate bar and hope it authorises. If it doesn't, I know I have spent my allowance and I just abandon the purchase and walk out.

Sometimes it even happens as I'm ordering a coffee.

I'm not embarrassed? I just say oh I've spent my budget, if I need to say something 🤷‍♀️ I dont care

Why don't you know how much money you have in your budget? Seems very irresponsible ?

Good that you don't spend over your budget, but to not know how much is left is crazy

bert3400 · 04/08/2025 11:03

I don't understand why you didn't explain yourself, I froze my card, my phone has died, I'm going to my car to charge my phone and unfreeze my card, will be back in 10 mins and buy my shopping, can you hold it for me ? .... I honestly don't get today's society where we are prolific complainers. You messed up ...that's on you ?

Rightsraptor · 04/08/2025 11:21

I was in LIdl the other day and phone payments were being declined and that led to a fair bit of the till staff calling across to each other. It was a computer glitch, actual cards were fine. I'd do your best to forget about it, OP.

PollyBell · 04/08/2025 11:24

Complain about what you created the situation you deal with it and move they probably did 2 seconds after it happened

No Way Wtf GIF by Harlem

Why, why would you do that??

Well, I just have a standing order for my spend-on-a-whim account

And so that just drops in each week

It's like my pocket money I suppose

I don't bother checking coz I just spend what I've got in there... I can't be bothered checking.

I just do it that way to restrict how much I spend on coffee and chocolate because I have poor self control otherwise 🤷‍♀️

Is that irresponsible? I dont think so. It works for me and at least when I walk the shop it's extra steps even if my card gets declined 🤣

See above...

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 04/08/2025 14:29

Please dont complain. They probably weren't laughing at you.

Retail staff have a tough enough gig. I can imagine a scenario where one said to another 5 minutes before ' bet you'll be back in two minutes sorting another card'

Unless they said something offensive to you,it is unlikely it was personal

Skissors · 04/08/2025 14:33

Did you manage to pay for the shopping? If you couldn't that would be a Pita for the shop staff to take the stuff back.

I would try to be more organised, its not hard to keep your phone charged.
