300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

These will be major trauma specialists. Specially skilled healthcare professionals. This will not have an impact on waiting lists for treatments.
GOSH is a global specialist. The skills they develop and practice may well save the life of a British child one day as well. They have done similar for children affected by war for decades. This isn’t just for Palestinian children.

So all 300 have major trauma?

Well to warrant evacuation on medical grounds, I would imagine so. Enormous numbers of child amputations and shrapnel wounds.

I would imagine the 1 million children that live in Gaza are all pretty fucking traumatised though. At a generational level.

RingDoor · 03/08/2025 20:24

As an aside, I have worked in the NHS for thirty years and I always think we have been better at managing acute illness than chronic. Pretty good at emergency treatment and stuff that needs managing immediately ICU etc. But much less good at dealing with the chronic management of ‘unglamorous’ conditions such as autoimmune diseases, and also at managing conditions such as epilepsy in the long-term. There is also poor communication between specialities for the patients who are unlucky enough to have more than one chronic condition. This needs better management.

Dealing with 300 ‘acute’ conditions in Gazan children will not change the NHS’ lack of interest in managing chronic conditions proactively. It requires a real change in mindset at a senior level.

What do you think? It’s quite likely isn’t it, given they’ve been getting bombed and shot at for two years

What is wrong with you?

There aren't even actually 300 children yet, it is "up to 300". I doubt they will be selecting cases which can be managed with a band-aid and an aspirin.

Does anyone have a link to a charity funding treatment for these kids? I'd be very happy to donate -I'm already a supporter of Medicins Sans Frontieres who do amazing work in Gaza and other horrific places

I support Medical aid for Palestinians- they might fund some of it:

Providing medical aid to Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees

For over 30 years, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has been reaching out to Palestinian communities, striving to deliver health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement.

You don't think? It's been recently recognised by Young Epilepsy that children/ young people with epilepsy need quite a bit of psychological and other indirect treatments that aren't even close to being able to be met.

The 'acute' conditions of the Gazan children are going to require lots of rehab, psychological treatment, dental, neurology, prosthetics etc aside from the initial treatment. These all take a lot of time and specialists treat.

These children need treatment, but don't kid anyone that it's a few weeks of treatment and off they pop.

Thegreyhound · 03/08/2025 20:32

@Livelovebehappy maybe you’d like to create a questionnaire to determine these children’s worth?
Qu 1: dear Gazan eight year old… have you…
a) been shot in the face?
b) had an arm or leg blown off?
c) had a spinal injury resulting in paralysis?
d) been trapped under the rubble of your home?
e) had a significant brain injury?
f) been deliberately shot in the testicles by a member of the IDF playing one of their hilarious sniper games?
If you have not answered yes to any of these questions then get lost, mumsnetters do not deem you worthy.
if you HAVE answered yes to any of these questions, please be aware that some mumsnetters still do not deem you worthy

After what these children will have been through, it's the least they deserve.

This is fucking ridiculous when amazing healthcare is available to them in the ME!! Why have we nominated ourselves as literally an open door to everyone in the entire world. It just gets worse by the day.

nearlylovemyusername · 03/08/2025 20:56

Are they all to be treated at GOSH? or in London?

As a former care worker in dementia led nursing homes, I find this post horrific.

Seriously think about what you are posting.

I was listening to a heartbreaking interview with a British surgeon who worked out there. He said that they were receiving the bodies of a lot of babies, many of whom had been deliberately shot in the head. We humans are capable of such cruelty. No matter what race, religion etc. we are capable of this and we have to keep reminding ourselves about the right thing to do. Taking these injured children is a gesture but an excellent one.

Seriously, stop listening to what Nigel says, he doesn’t have a shred of decency or morality. Things aren’t ’getting worse by the day’ apart from in the minds of brainwashed racists.

We haven't, many countries are doing more. They are children.

There’s no need to import any more people to drain NHS resources. The Middle East has some of the best hospitals in the world. Let them look after their neighbours. Will they?

Wtaf! I haven’t read anything from Farsge or anyone else. This is clearly insanity when you look at the waiting lists alone. We can’t afford to do this! So many on here on benefits think there is a magic tree churning out the millions to pay for all of this !

They are. This isnt being funded by the NHS.
