300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

We are bringing 300 children here for medical treatment. Arab countries have been taking in sick and injured children from Gaza for some time now.

How come you missed it?

I think the point being made is that obviously those children have families and will need somewhere to live, money etc. when other Arab countries are helping out they are most likely treating the children and nothing more, we on the other hand will take them and their families in and end up paying the bill for them to permanently love here

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 03/08/2025 14:18

When will they and their families leave?

I bet they don't

To think it's outrageous that we can pay for 300 Gazan kids (it is the NHS paying for this - the philanthropic stuff is separate) but not British kids? The paediatric pain management services in NHS England has a waiting time of c17 weeks.

This isn't about not treating kids from Gaza (although I knew some people would choose to read it that way). It's about the political choice to make children in the UK wait months to have essential surgery or pain treatment. Why is nobody protesting about that?

The nhs care is handed out to those whose need is the greatest, I am not denying uk children have pain but not to the extent that these children in Gaza need help, lost limbs, wounds caused by bombing, starvation to name a few. You think children in the uk have the same problems? We are a country that prides ourself on our compassion, if we lose that we lose what it means to be British, what ever Farage & Trump would have you believe.

They get £49 a week. Why don't you try and survive on that? Like I said they get deported if their claim is rejected and if not then yes they get taken care of. They come from war zones, or places were they're forced to undergo FGM, and where they are experiencing famine and starvation, or civil war. Because you wouldn't try and escape that would you. No you would stay and 'fix your country' (whatever that means, when it's often the fault of developed countries that cause economic neo-colonialism and the conflicts). Plus if you really want this to stop you'd be wanting developed countries to invest in climate change because even though developed countries emitt more carbon it will be the developing nations who experience flooding and end up with no water so they will have to migrate up north. So if you want less immigration I'd be advocating for investment in net zero.

That's a lot of money at 49 a week for the amount we have and that doesn't take into account bed and board, phones etc that is spending money. And as you say it isn't a lot to live on which drives up crime in our country as a lot end up drug dealing, pick pocketing etc

Lilaclinacre · 03/08/2025 14:19

Driftingawaynow · 03/08/2025 12:12

Because we have assisted in this genocide for goodness sake’s, are you really that ill educated?

No we have not assisted in genocide that is absolute nonsense.

Well we're helping to fund the bombs the least we can do is help the children we've helped to severely injure? You need to direct your anger at the right place love its a bit sad and sorry you're annoyed nhs are helping injured CHILDREN

Agree with this.

I think it's outrageous that UK gave away land that didn't belong to them in the first place.

Yes so maybe we should let them work, it's not like they gave a choice. And they aren't the ones drug dealing and driving up crime either, but of course blame them because you don't understand. £49 a week is a lot of money, really? Why don't you try to live off it then. Plus, yes they get phones (but it's not the newest iPhone, it often for children who need to get in contact with parents when they go to school etc) and they only get such stuff once their asylum claim has been accepted not before them.

Lilaclinacre · 03/08/2025 14:23

TheLivelyViper · 03/08/2025 14:05

Yes they aren't all doctors or engineers, many of them are healthcare professionals, their porters and care workers and nurses and construction workers - areas where we have massive labour shortages. Plus so what if they do have barber shops, asylum seekers cannot claim benefits until their claim is accepted. They get £49 a week if you want to try and survive on that go for it. Also we need more children, the birth rate is very low abd we need more children - who else will pay our pensions and work. So maybe it's a good thing they have more children because we need them. Also many of them do speak English as a second language, they also may speak their mother tongue (just because you over hear them on the phone speaking a different language doesn't mean they don't speak English), in fact many are multilingual unlike the majority of British people who only speak English.

No the majority of these economic illegal migrants are not registered and qualified nurses that is absolute rubbish

The charities funding this also fund the adult accompanying the child. Both here and in the other countries they go to.

I readily admit I don’t know why the wealthy Arab countries much closer to their home aren’t providing this care.

It all feels rather performative.

They are providing much more care than this; these kids have come to where the relevant specialists are.

They will obviously claim asylum and get it.

I hope they do. They've obviously have a good case for seeking asylum.

Many of them are, do you know what an economic migrant is? Many of them are qualified nurses who want better pay and a better life. Many of them are care workers and work in nurseries and construction (that's why many carers homes and groups advocating for them, told the government that there will be dire consequences of changing the visa requirements for care workers as they said that's the majority of their workforce. Areas like construction and care are majority immigrants because British people aren't going to work in such low-paid work, without them we'd have massive labour shortages.

MarieAndTwinette · 03/08/2025 14:28

Good. I wish we were taking more. 300 is a drop in the ocean. If any of these children need foster families while they are here I am willing to have them come and live with me.

You are jealous of the starving injured half dead kids in war torn Gaza?

New low.
Well done!

It's very dangerous to be revisionist on these historical events, that is why we are in so many politicosocial quagmires atm. The Ottoman Empire had floundered even before the Great War, it was not clear cut.

TheLivelyViper · 03/08/2025 14:29

Lilaclinacre · 03/08/2025 14:24

Why should we let them work? They have no right to come here. People have had enough of it.

They do have a right actually. In international human rights law and immigration law, it's clear that when a person has a valid asylum claim they have a right to go wherever they want as long as its a safe country. It's their right to choose where the take refuge as refugees. Because they are in war zones, famine, civil war, impacts of climate change (mainly caused by developed countries emissions), FGM, terrorism.

TheEllisGreyMethod · 03/08/2025 14:29

You can dress it up under false concern for whatever you wish op, we all know why you have this problem. Just come out and say it.
Unless you have the same energy and speak out against the daily abuse of the NHS which is the real problem contributing to waiting times. No? Thought not.

I don't think they'll need foster families. A parent/s and siblings are coming too and they'll no doubt be housed and very well looked after post treatment and ongoing.

Bumblebee72 · 03/08/2025 14:32

Good. The Isrealis have bombed their hospitals. These poor children need help.

I said 49 is a lot of money when it's for thousands of people???

Sunshineandoranges · 03/08/2025 14:36

I praise you for your courage…it is important that everyone feels able to talk about issues without the offensive replies some people have made. Someone objects to excessive immigration… some people respond by calling them racist…so people get into their groups and antagonise each other rather than debate. I wanted to stay in the eu and this reluctance to engage with either side’s opinion is what to a large extent imo caused the brexit voting result. You make a valid point about the pressure on the nhs.

Bumblebee72 · 03/08/2025 14:36

Are we meant to be outraged at the idea of the UK helping these children? I can get outraged about a lot of what the government spends money on but helping kids whose homes have been bombed to the ground is not one of them.
