300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

Good. The Isrealis have bombed their hospitals. These poor children need help.

Well as others have said Arab nations are taking a lot so why on earth can't they take them all?

Saudi, Qatar, Dubai, all these mega rich countries can absolutely afford to treat and host their neighbours. Just think, they all speak Arabic so that would of course be of great comfort to families for starters. I used ro work in Saudi their hospitals are like palaces, money is no object.

If we have capacity to treat 300 kids privately or whatever then our own residents should be top of the list.

Because all this 'we have no money' thing is crap.

I am so glad we're helping these children though. I really don't think that they are one of the things the gov is frittering money away on.

What about all the UK children on waiting lists??

Why are the Gazan children coming here? Why are no other countries taking them in?

Does this mean their families (10 children) plus fathers and multiple wives and the elders are all coming too?

We're screwed.

Bumblebee72 · 03/08/2025 14:36

Are we meant to be outraged at the idea of the UK helping these children? I can get outraged about a lot of what the government spends money on but helping kids whose homes have been bombed to the ground is not one of them.

It'd happening in the Middle East, they are surrounded by rich countries. It'd be like if we had a conflict and we shipped kids to China not Europe which is on our doorstep

dottiedodah · 03/08/2025 14:42

Personally I think this is an unselfish act by KS and applaud it.The devastation out there is appalling. It doesnt matter whether their immediate neighbours are helping or not .Someone has to do something surely

Why should they take them all? Maybe we could send some of our long term unemployed over to Gaza to help the rebuild, make it a condition of their benefits. I bet they would find a job pretty quick if that was the option. We spend far more on our own layabouts than we will on these kids. We are a mega rich country too.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2025 14:43

5000 children are being treated in UAE, Egypt and Qatar.

Oh undoubtedly. It says 'a' parent and siblings 'if necessary'. It'll be necessary though and both parents plus extended family no doubt for reasons such as interpretation, caring requirements or whatever other reason that be thought of.

If I had a dc on a waiting lists I'd be firing off emails to my MP asking how can this happen.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/08/2025 14:44

I’m so glad to hear that we are. Those poor children.

I’m glad they’re coming to safety.

They won’t all be going to the same hospital!

Edit - the govt may well have to put more money in for this to happen. I’m fine with that. It doesn’t mean anyone’s DC will miss out on or be delayed treatment.

I don't think we agree on much but in this case 100%.

Yes and they have capacity for 5000 more. They have more opulent half empty hospitals than we have Travelodges.

I don't think there is a waiting list for treating gun shot wounds and severe starvation in kids in the UK. Certainly where I am if a child had a gun shot wound they would be at the front of the queue at A&E.

Sorry but you're behind the times. This is funded by British taxpayers. And you are part of the problem with society now. You've decided you want a fight about how kind you are and how evil someone else (me on this occasion) is and you've shut your brain down.

You'd rather just sit colouring in your wee Palestine flags for your window than think about boring domestic policy, I get it.

This of course is why the NHS won't improve day to day. There is money. But people like you only think about the Shiny Current Thing so politicians won't invest in the basics.

Edited

If you are going to have an anti-immigration rant, as least have the decency to get at least one fact straight about the point you are making.

I haven't see one anti-immigration thread yet that actually has a coherent, factual argument.

The bigger question is why is the genocide of Gazans is still continuing?

Why have the hospitals been in Gaza been bombed?

These children shouldn't need to fly across the world for treatment. They shouldn't be subjected to the conditions that they have been in.

GrammarTeacher · 03/08/2025 14:48

Why are so many people on here so cruel! Many of these children have experienced multiple amputations and have lost many family members.
We have skills in this area that we are prepared to share like many other countries.
It’s hard to say what this thread has made me feel without sounded hyperbolic. But I have never seen so many deleted messages. That says a lot as I often think MNHQ let things stand that they really shouldn’t. I’m going off to lift some heavy things.

Because they have the funds, the capacity for many more. They all speak the same language which is of course easier for families and it is logistically easier to tf a sick dc to Saudi as it is to move to the UK.

We are not a mega rich country by any stretch compared to Qatar and Saudi. I wonder if they have 15week waiting lists for paediatric surgery?!

Lilaclinacre · 03/08/2025 14:50

TheLivelyViper · 03/08/2025 14:26

Many of them are, do you know what an economic migrant is? Many of them are qualified nurses who want better pay and a better life. Many of them are care workers and work in nurseries and construction (that's why many carers homes and groups advocating for them, told the government that there will be dire consequences of changing the visa requirements for care workers as they said that's the majority of their workforce. Areas like construction and care are majority immigrants because British people aren't going to work in such low-paid work, without them we'd have massive labour shortages.

No they are not. The majority of the people on those boats are economic migrants entering the country illegally and not genuine asylum seekers. We have no idea who they are and what their history is. The tide is turning and people have had enough of these people abusing the (outdated) asylum system and being housed and fed by tax payers. Enough is enough.

VaccineSticker · 03/08/2025 14:51

PersephoneSeethes · 03/08/2025 14:29

It's very dangerous to be revisionist on these historical events, that is why we are in so many politicosocial quagmires atm. The Ottoman Empire had floundered even before the Great War, it was not clear cut.

Agreed but why do we still sell them arms?! They are using those arms to kill children (and starve them) and we are now trying to hospitalise those children. Isn’t it a bit ironic?

CoffeeMama1 · 03/08/2025 14:51

Good. They're victims of a genocide, they need care.

Hamiltonfan · 03/08/2025 14:51

applegingermint · 03/08/2025 10:48

Why don’t we just fund their care in Dubai, Qatar or any of the other wealthy Arab states? They have excellent medical facilities. Surely that is cheaper than bringing over 300 families.

Israel used to do it free of charge for Gazans. But the Gazans have destroyed that option now.

You do not know this. Until their applications are assessed they are asylum seekers. This is a perfectly legal thing to be.

Hamas have, not the Gazans
These children have done nothing that would justify being bombed and starved

And this is the problem isn't it because that system is being abused. 10/15/20 years ago i'd agree with you whole heartedly but now I do not, as it's out of control.

Driftingawaynow · 03/08/2025 14:56

Lilaclinacre · 03/08/2025 14:19

No we have not assisted in genocide that is absolute nonsense.

According to a United Nations Special Committee,[38] Amnesty International,[39] Médecins Sans Frontières,[40] B'Tselem,[41] genocide studies and international law scholars,[42] and other experts, Israel is committing genocide in Gaza against the Palestinians during its ongoing blockade, invasionand bombing of the Gaza Strip.[43][44] The acts of genocide described by experts and human rights organisations include large-scale killing and use of starvation as a weapon of war. Other such genocidal acts include destroying civilian infrastructure, killing healthcare workers and aid-seekers, using mass forced displacement, committing sexual violence, and preventing births.

During the Gaza war, the United Kingdom government has supported Israel diplomatically, has shared Gaza surveillance information with Israel and has allowed arms sales to Israel's military.
