To think we need more programmes like The Littlest Hobo

Dont you think that bringing back The Littlest Hobo, Happy Days and The Wonder Years etc (but only in their original ways, no modern interpretations) would help heal the world? Just some wholesome, family escapism (even if you you cry a bit when the dog keeps moving on).

Break in the sun is on YouTube

Also recommend the novel by Bernard Ashley. There are some differences from the TV serial - more people on the boat, which is a barge rather than a masted ship; Eddie Green is more violent, and he and Kenny sleep rough for a night when they are searching for Patsy.

I loved Children of Fire Mountain too.

No because I hated the Littlest Hobo. It always meant the school holidays and that there was no Blue Peter or any of the other programmes I liked, just shit like the Littlest Hobo or even worse Gentle Ben. Not proper TV like Rentaghost.

I loved the Littlest Hobo and fucking hated rentaghost! Each to their own I guess. I am with you on Gentle Ben

Best theme tune ever. Theme tune way better than the actual programme

There’s a voice….

Dr Quinn, medicine woman
Quantum leap

I had a crazy crush on Scott Bakula ❤️

OonaStubbs · 03/08/2025 21:15

I remember an animated show called "Wait Til Your Father Gets Home" being shown in the summer holidays, normally as the last show of the morning which I supposed was aimed at the older kids audience and some adults.

CinnamonCinnabar · 03/08/2025 21:17

Nope hated all the American sentimental twaddle that never had a proper ending. Clearly I still watched it but that's because of lack of other options at the time!

Now Rentaghost and Round the Twist, that was quality TV

Having bought a DVD of the Doctor Who I watched as a kid I would recommend NOT watching anything you have fond childhood memories of - adult me was shocked by how utterly rubbish 80s Doctor Who is.

Emmz1510 · 03/08/2025 21:24

My husband and I are always saying that there is no really good TV for kids these days- classics with emotion, strong characters and great soundtracks that you could look forward to.
Some of my favourites were the Littlest Hobo, Dogtanian and the Three Muskethounds, Cities of Gold, Woof, the Waltons, Quantum Leap, The Gummi Bears, The Raccoons, Children’s Ward and Byker Grove.

Don’t think you can call homeless people hobos anymore

OonaStubbs · 03/08/2025 22:27

Lots of brilliant tv shows mentioned. It’s such a shame so many of them are off air now because they’d be perfect for my autistic ds.
i used to love Little House and the Waltons, and also Night Rider, The Incredible Hulk, and The A Team.

Was children of the stones, set in Somerset and very scary?
The joy of most of these was you got a whole story that neatly came to a conclusion. Babies were clearly identified and usually got their comeuppance and they had a strong message to be kind or tell the truth or whatever. No sex and no violence that frightened.

When I was a bit older I loved “The Love boat” which was ridiculously shmaltzy and “Fantasy Island”….

Oh, yes, the tennis one - working class Barry Greaves trying to make it as a tennis player against the wishes of his depressed, unemployed dad, his school which only believed in team sports, and the snobby middle-class people he encountered on the tennis circuit. And his friend Lucy who had a really annoying older sister. Amazing TV, would love to see that one again but I've never been able to find it anywhere.

In the same style as Night Rider, there was the motorbike version Street Hawk. Quite liked that back in the 80s.

My older brother would poke fun and called it Boulevard Budgie, the git.

We recently reached The Storyteller! Absolute classic!

I rewatch little house and the Waltons regularly, takes me back to childhood weekends

When my daughter was a new born and I was up at 5.30 a.m., there was a channel on sky that should The Waltons at about 06.30 in the morning.

The emotion and exhaustion of being a new parent chimed really well with the wholesomeness and beauty of The Waltons, and left me with happy tears every episode.

When I recently had six /seven moths of poor mental health, anxiety and depression, watching old gentle programmes on YouTube really helped me.

Love Boat
Heidi
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn

I would recommend them for a bit of life affirming goodness.

When I had my last baby , I rewatched dallas beginning to end , not as gentle viewing but very nostalgic .

Children of The Stones was set at Avebury in Wiltshire, yes creepy

I loved 'Mysterious cities of Gold' back in the day. A bit older and I liked 'Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman' as a pp mentioned.

When I was much younger I liked 'Bagpuss' and 'Cockleshell Bay'.

Sunday was 'Little house on the Prairie', 'Land of the Giants' and 'Lost in Space' as well as Lassie and Littlest Hobo. I can almost smell a roast dinner cooking just typing those titles!

Why can't there be a TV channel for programmes like this?

The Red Hand Gang.

Where were their parents????

Why can't there be a TV channel for programmes like this?

Because TV channels are old fashioned. Lots of this stuff is on BritBox or YouTube.
