To think we need more programmes like The Littlest Hobo

Dont you think that bringing back The Littlest Hobo, Happy Days and The Wonder Years etc (but only in their original ways, no modern interpretations) would help heal the world? Just some wholesome, family escapism (even if you you cry a bit when the dog keeps moving on).

I had forgotten Break in the Sun! I was 15 ish, but still watched it avidly.
I agree that older programmes had a less sensory provoking effect. Even when my DC were growing up, it was changing. Short, bright, fast sequences. I thought at the time it wasn't good for concentration. Our older serials that were 20- 25 mins, had more complex stories that would be deemed inappropriate now, whilst modern kids get violence, scary stuff as well as quick fire cartoons. The modern visuals can be quite sophisticated and scary when we considered daleks frightening.

Round the Twist for me, the theme tune and the bird poo episode 🤣

Me and DB LOVED that show, some of the episodes were genuinely twisted like the one with the witch giving the kids warts with her wand. It was a genius show with a great themetune.

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/08/2025 20:14

Children of the Stones, can you imagine the special effects if that was remade! 😂

What about The Storyteller? 😂

My Gran used to buy me the Storyteller magazine and cassette every fortnight. I’ve still got it. Also loved The Littlest Hobo, Dogtanian and The Flumps

Totally agree re modern day kids programmes. They are so overstimulating. Too much animation instead of real life, too much bright colour, fast movement, constant loud voices and fast tempo music. It's no wonder so many are finding focus difficult and have sensory issues.

Andy and his dinosaurs is perfect.

Anyone remember beachcombers? I loved Buck Rogers also.

I liked the little robot.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/08/2025 20:53

Did they ever make a TV show of My Sweet Audrina @MysweetAudrina ? I loved the book. It would have been around the same era as the shows mentioned here.

Kellywiththelegs · 02/08/2025 20:55

Anyone remember Look and Read that was shown in schools, the BBC literacy programme for children? The Boy from Space was terrifying as a kid!

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/08/2025 21:01

Do they even make proper dramas for kids these days like we had? I don't see anything but don't look for it either. I know they did a Malory Towers, but I haven't seen much else mentioned.

No idea if they ever made a TV show. But wholesome it definitely is not! :)

I remember this, Dark Towers was very scary. I can't remember any of the other ones.

Yeah, but “Why don’t you?”

I bloody hated ‘Why Don’t You?’! The only programme whose music forewarned viewers what a crap, boring programme it was.

“Why don’t you just switch off your television set and go out and do something less boring instead?”

Actually yes, I think I will; thank you for the prompt. There’s probably a game of kerby going on somewhere. If not I’ll put my roller boots on and head over to the park.

Vgbeat · 02/08/2025 22:31

Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down.

Classic 80’s TV! I also remember Dark Towers, Badger Girl and Fairground. A great cliffhanger every week, and bangers like “Why don’t you build yourself a word? Build yourself a word with an ~ing” for good measure. Beats the pants off this TikTok nonsense.

Itchybritches · 02/08/2025 23:05

Anyone remember Marmalade Atkins? (I think this is what it was called) I remember it was about a girl with an attitude - my DM didn’t like me watching it!

I don’t remember Dark Towers, off to YouTube I go for a memory jog!

Break in the Sun is one of my all time favourite children's dramas - the story of Patsy who runs away from Deptford to Margate to escape her abusive stepfather and mother who does nothing to protect her.

I read an interview with the writer, Bernard Ashley, who said the series hadn't been repeated since the early 80s because it was considered too hard hitting for modern children!

I remember watching that. Now that was good.

yes I do, I loved it too.
We also have Dogtanian on DVD and the DCs loved it when they were little. Can’t beat Rentaghost or Rubarb and Custard for their theme tunes though 😁

Yes - that was really edgy because it was on ITV 😆

Dontlletmedownbruce · 03/08/2025 08:11

I went down a Google rabbit hole inspired by this thread. I was going to mention Alf, I loved this show and I think all the family could watch it together. Sadly the little boy in it died a few months ago, he fell asleep in his car on a hot day, he also had a medical condition. Only in his 40s. So sad. Only last week I heard that Theo from the Cosby show drowned a few weeks ago while swimming with his family, only in his 50s.

Iamtarticus · 03/08/2025 10:23

This was The Storyteller that I used to watch in Sundays
