To think we need more programmes like The Littlest Hobo

Dont you think that bringing back The Littlest Hobo, Happy Days and The Wonder Years etc (but only in their original ways, no modern interpretations) would help heal the world? Just some wholesome, family escapism (even if you you cry a bit when the dog keeps moving on).

Yes! What a tune!

“Down in the willows, where the wind blows free”

Off to Google 😁

Missymarple · 02/08/2025 16:56

I can't hear the theme tune to The Littlest Hobo without getting a lump in my throat at the 'maybe tomorrow' line. It happened when I was a kid and even more so now. All those people offering to give that dog a home....and he just kept moving on trying to find his own home 😭

No because I hated the Littlest Hobo. It always meant the school holidays and that there was no Blue Peter or any of the other programmes I liked, just shit like the Littlest Hobo or even worse Gentle Ben. Not proper TV like Rentaghost.

Worse than that - Heidi!!!....

crumpetswithcheeze · 02/08/2025 17:03

Yes 100%. I have the first season of the Littlest Hobo on DVD and love watching it with the kids

Theteenandme · 02/08/2025 17:14

For some reason Ive just thought of Old Jack's Boat and the episode where he talks about his dead wife. 😭😭😭

Kids will never know the electric anticipation of waking up on the first day of the summer holidays and wondering whether it’s Heidi, Silas or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to look forward to.

Gentle Ben that was a classic.

Although dogtantian and the three muskehounds was probably my fave.

Mine too. I was so excited to find it on dvd when my children were little. I managed 5 minutes

Oh Christ, I forgot about that!!! 😫😫

I'm guessing you mean Storybook International?

He was my first crush 😆🥰

There was a TV show about a guy with a beard who lived with a bear in a cave or something? Any recollection?. Also a TV show with Michael Landon where he was an angel who looked human and it was Heaven or something about Heaven. Both late 80s

The life and times of Grizzly Adams. The actual best theme tune ever. I loved that.
I also loved Highway to Heaven. I am not sure either of these were children's TV as such, but back then you just watched what was on.

HarryBlackberry1 · 02/08/2025 17:34

I loved Littlest Hobo and shows like Gentle Ben. Children's TV shows today are too 'busy' and everything is so bright and day-glo. I miss the simple days.

This OJB episode is the best children’s TV in modern history I think.

I loved the Littlest Hobo theme tune. Obvs. But found the programme a bit boring and was always anxious about where he was going next and who was going to look after him. Same for Lassie. Gentle Ben, I didn’t find remotely appealing as a narrative.

The Waltons and Little House, I watched them and like them for amusing retro appeal but they also equalled boring Sundays.

The Wonder Years, Rentaghost and Why Don’t You I have very happy watching memories of.

Iamtarticus · 02/08/2025 17:50

Flipper?

OonaStubbs · 02/08/2025 17:51

They should do Littlest Hobo, Lassie, Flipper and Gentle Ben movies, they could be part of a Hero Animal Movie Universe and have occasional movies where they team up to take on a common enemy.

OonaStubbs · 02/08/2025 17:52

Skippy the Bush Kangaroo could be part of the universe as well.

The Red Hand Gang and Tales of the Gold Monkey for me.

Yes!

I lived these. Fitted to find out the lead in tales of the gold monkey was an abuser.

And Monkey- fab series.

I'm with you on that I hated that schmaltzy style programme's as a kid.

Brendahollowayreconsider · 02/08/2025 18:12

Heidi

You say that but I was taken to see the Littlest Hobo film for my 6th birthday in 1963. My mum took a group of my friends with us. It just about finished us off. We didn't stop crying for days. Be careful what you wish for!

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/08/2025 18:20

Definitely....I've got boxsets of The Littlest Hobo, The Red Hand Gang, Lassie on dvds..
Children today are deprived.

PerfectTuesday · 02/08/2025 18:26

The Littlest Hobo was something we only watched during the holidays if it was raining and we'd exhausted every other possible avenue of entertainment 😆

I loved Heidi (Katya Pollet version) though - I have it now on DVD. The first time I watched it as an adult (having last seen it in 1979) I got a bit tearful when the 'beautiful alps' music came on over a shot of the mountains. It's so wonderfully faithful to the book, or at least to English translations of it.

Absolutely loved Heidi. Everything about it!
