Those who don't decorate but wear designer

AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

Bat shit

Kirbert2 · 31/07/2025 19:30

Our walls are white and likely staying white because it's a council house and if we ever moved out, we'd have to paint it all white again and I don't care enough to have different coloured walls just to possibly have to paint them all white again in the future.

We have a rug in the living room and cushions though but no art on the wall.

Is "curate" anything like "curette" ? Asking for a working-class friend.

Lololol.

Or even like "curettage"?

Does my woodchip wallpaper count OP?
It is painted magnolia!

Think that’s a design classic; the equivalent of a little Channel jacket 😁

You put bat shit on your walls?

What is a decorative item ?

An interior mooning garden gnome, for instance. Or china ducks flying diagonally across your wall. Or a standard lamp shaped like a leg in a stiletto and fishnets.

usedtobeaylis · 31/07/2025 19:33

Why would anyone even care about this? I don't have designer anything and my home is rented and pretty basic in terms of decor. Outdated, one night say. But so what? It's comfortable and lived in and we love it and our saggy DFS sofa.

SapphireSeptember · 31/07/2025 19:34

Does Holo Taco count as designer? Because I've bought quite a few nail polishes since I moved into my flat but haven't painted yet. Only no one sees my bottles of nail polish. 😁

I have got loads of fleece blankets, fancy cushions, candles and decorations though, mostly Halloween/autumn/pumpkin themed, and I've stuck pictures on the walls (Pusheen ones and an Evanescence poster from 2017.)

Perception is more important than reality?

Are you suggesting her top isn’t real?

Curated bat shit.

This is hilarious. Im going to change my username to CarefullyCuratedFurniture.

Nah, I’d rather have nice clothes than a naff instagram ‘neutral’ palette decorated house. It’s like the wilko wallpaper of the noughties. I get way more pleasure out of nice stuff than a house that is up to date with ‘current’ decoration trends.

Is that what the OP means do you think? Instagrammable beige and grey or it's not 'proper'?

no, I was quoting one of their earlier posts that referenced a ‘neutral palette’.

Why do you equate white walls with not caring? My walls are white because I like white. Curated white, if you will.

CountryCob · 31/07/2025 19:40

Decorating is much harder work than dressing up. People can't always manage it. People aren't often prepared to do it themselves either when they physically could. Decorating is also expensive, I have done an awful lot of it over the years. The last room I decorated I kept a tally for, a utility with reused cabinets, making curtains and painting myself cost around £600 in materials, shelving etc. I bought second hand for that and was given some materials. Still waiting for a small handy man type job to be done there, have been waiting over a month for them to fit us in. Really messy and a hassle when everything from the room you are doing is all over the house. There is absolutely no comparison between that work and getting some clothes.

IesuGrist1975 · 31/07/2025 19:40

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:51

Neutral is fine. There are different shades and styles within a neutral pallete

Here-

SomeOfTheTrouble · 31/07/2025 19:40

Also, why do you think council housing is free?! Pretty sure council tenants pay rent.

Taxpayers money goes to councils to maintain and social housing. Also the opportunity cost of rent it out below market rate

Free? I pay rent.

No, I can't say I care enough about changing the colours of my walls only to have to put them back to how they were should we move in the future.

It's clean, including the walls. They are just staying white. I really don't see the big deal.
