AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

@saltandvinegarchipsticks is that a new word for you?

Of course not, I’m just not pretentious enough to use it in this context. I’m sure you’re fully aware of how it comes across though, and are enjoying this goady thread.

I get what you mean OP- I know some friends with the fancy car, clothes etc plenty of money and always look lovely, but their homes are outdated. I don't think it's a bad thing at all, it's just odd to me that they care a lot about looks and aesthetics but don't seem to see their home in the same way.

Obviously I don't think because you own a few designer items you must have a brand new kitchen, bathroom and crushed velvet furniture, but it's odd to drive a range rover you own outright, wear expensive clothes and have a very high income, but you sit on worn out sofas that came with the house, and your kitchen doors are hanging on for dear life.

Serious question @FullOfMomsense ... if they like their home decor why is it "outdated?
Because it doesn't fit the current trend? Why would someone need to change their wallpaper / furniture etc... Because some fashion police decide it's "outdated"?

That's why I decorate the way I like not what's fashionable!

Ridiculous notions!!

Not wealthy. And it's not about the choice of furniture whether from ikea or second hand but the fact you have chosen a specific piece that you like that suits the home. Rather than having worn out furniture dirty walls etc whilst maintaining your outside appearance

Well, the sofa I'm sitting on is one I pinched from my parents about 25 years ago. I think due to its age, it's in excellent condition and it's very heavy. The removal men actually swore when they picked it up 😂 then they said to me that they were just assuming it was some modern lightweight thing.

The walls, I moved in about two years ago and I haven't repainted on top of the off-white that the building company did. It's just me here so I don't think the walls need cleaning.

The rest of the furniture is not great - it fits into a new build so it's properly curated.

But yeah, what I look like when I go out is more important. I'm not particularly well dressed or expensively dressed but I'm reasonably well presented, if that makes sense.

If you gave me £2000 and told me I could either spend it on the flat or I could spend it on clothing, I would definitely choose clothing. But that's not just about what you look like. It's about being comfortable and having nice fabrics etc.

often when I'm home I'm too tired to really be concerned about what it looks like. There is also an unhung picture by the television.

Painting walls and buying decorative items

I personally hate “decorative items” and have a very minimal approach to home decor. I also don’t wear designer clothes.

My priorities are travel, theatre and experiences for DC not that I care at all what others think about that!

londongirl12 · 31/07/2025 19:22

I really couldn’t care what other people do and what is a priority to them.

What is a decorative item ?

It means choosing furniture for the room. Is that something you need support with

Why didn't you just say that? Curated sounds very pretentious.

Catsandcannedbeans · 31/07/2025 19:24

I used to get picked on by a girl at school who was kitted out in designer clothes for my hand me downs. Told my dad and he said he parents can’t keep the leccy on, and asked if I want new Nikes or the lights on. I promptly went in the next day and told her her parents should spend their dole money on keeping the lights on and not shit she would grow out of in a year and asked if they were stupid. She beat the shit out of me. I agree with you OP, but from experience it’s best to keep it to yourself and left people spend their money on what they want.

Smallsalt · 31/07/2025 19:24

Why on earth would this matter to you? How weird .

Cattery · 31/07/2025 19:24

Live and let live ffs. We don’t all want to live in a bling palace show home. Clean, tidy and comfortable is enough. We’re not all flashy bastards

IesuGrist1975 · 31/07/2025 19:25

Nah, I’d rather have nice clothes than a naff instagram ‘neutral’ palette decorated house. It’s like the wilko wallpaper of the noughties. I get way more pleasure out of nice stuff than a house that is up to date with ‘current’ decoration trends.

Pepperpie14 · 31/07/2025 19:25

Go on then @OceanStorm show us plebs how you so expertly curate your home. Pictures please or we’ll just have to assume you’ve painted everything magnolia and have Ikea furniture.

housethatbuiltme · 31/07/2025 19:25

Over 1/3rd of homes are rented.

You would be a mug to spend your money decorating up someone else's house + most private rentals have rules that you can't.

Who said they should have a neutral pallete?? It could be pink and yellow but it's the effort that went into making a house a home

Its not a class thing. You're a judgemental prick.

grinchyvalentine · 31/07/2025 19:27

I’ll admit there is a creator on tik tok (guilty pleasure) who is constantly buying designer bags and clothes. She works hard, her choice why not but when she showed her living room I couldn’t help but think I’d sacrifice some of the designer stuff for some curtains and decor 😅 I don’t know anyone in real life who does this though. Horses for courses!

i know someone who works with hoarders through the council and has come across a number of people who present themselves as perfectly normal, well (not designer) dressed people but have horrific homes (of course there are people who aren’t dressed well too who live in these houses).
How people present themselves tends to matter, what it’s like behind closed doors? Who knows. But I don’t think you can comment on their priorities- my example is extreme but my point applies to anyone.

I just mean outdated compared to their personal style. On example is a kitchen from the 80s with grotty tiled worktops and chickens on the tiled backsplash. Cupboards barely hanging on, and peeling lino. Rest of the house looks tired, wallpaper with borders still in most rooms, teen son's bedroom has a peeling wallpaper border more suitable for a young girl's bedroom. These aren't choices, it's like they don't notice it, even with modern furniture in the house.

I live on a farm for context, so I'm not exactly fashion forward and my house is filled with decor most would hate and think is unfashionable- but it's all clean, new, nicely painted in the last 5-10 years etc.

I'm finding it more and more difficult to get my point across on threads like this without accidentally insulting someone unintentionally, so I apologise if I come across that way- but it's not my intention to sound like a dick!

NoSoupForU · 31/07/2025 19:29

It isn't really for me to decide whether other people should prioritise decorating their homes or themselves. And frankly, I don't really care.

I also don't understand why there needs to be 2 extremes.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 31/07/2025 19:29

Is "curate" anything like "curette" ? Asking for a working-class friend.

I dont do designer stuff cos I personally find it a waste of money. I like to have a tidy home but I think people who change their decor/accessories every year or because its 'the fashion' are just as strange as people who do designer, its a waste of money.

I decorate my house as I like it. I dont have lots of accessories and stuff stays until it NEEDS to be replaced.

That sounds very much like our kitchen in our last house, which was rented so there was very little we could do about it. I grew fond of my chickens!
