AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

OP can’t spell, doesn’t bode well for her taste in ‘curating’ a house…

Sigh.
They're not free.
You have to pay rent.

Careful, OP. Your snobby side is very unattractive.

It means choosing furniture for the room. Is that something you need support with

That's a bitchy comment!

Probably aligns to the thread.

I think the op also has the hump with designer gear as they spent all their money on twigs in vases and now look shabby walking around Tesco's.

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:45

@Kirbert2 people who have bought homes have to decorate and most are paying a lot more then council rent

Since when did paying rent equate to free?

I lived in a council house for a few years. I can tell you I worked my arse off to keep paying the rent on that thing. It definitely wasn't free! And despite paying rent month in, month out for several years, I wasn't allowed to do anything to the house besides have magnolia walls from top to bottom.

Tbh, I hate over decorated houses. Bloody trinkets everywhere! I haven’t got the time to clean that shite!

My late mum used to call ornaments "dust catchers". She warned me against ornaments and also against having silver or silver plate in the house - wastes too much time cleaning.

No indeed.

Maybe her sign will say CAN'T SPELL DON'T CARE instead of LIVE LAUGH LOVE

Lucyweeks · 31/07/2025 19:47

I give you my carefully 'curated' 18C chair.
Filthy upholstery by Mr John Lewis, holes by Les Enfants and a chewed leg courtesy of my late JRT. Accessorised by Scots of Stow old codgers cushion.

However I will spoil my old school credentials by admitting to attending a MW job interview today in a new Max Mara blazer!

Decorating is much harder work than dressing up. People can't always manage it. People aren't often prepared to do it themselves either when they physically could. Decorating is also expensive, I have done an awful lot of it over the years. The last room I decorated I kept a tally for, a utility with reused cabinets, making curtains and painting myself cost around £600 in materials, shelving etc. I bought second hand for that and was given some materials. Still waiting for a small handy man type job to be done there, have been waiting over a month for them to fit us in. Really messy and a hassle when everything from the room you are doing is all over the house. There is absolutely no comparison between that work and getting some clothes.

I do any painting in my house and I am terrible at it. It's definitely not properly decorated.

Taxpayers money goes to councils to maintain and social housing. Also the opportunity cost of rent it out below market rate

Why does that mean the PP has a free house?

They don't have to, they might want to though. I don't want to paint my walls which is perfectly fine.

No they don’t. They can choose to decorate, if they want to. Like everyone else.

Thulpelly · 31/07/2025 19:49

No. It’s not a class thing.

Terry2025 · 31/07/2025 19:49

I know a few people who would fall into this category - we refer to them as

“all fur coat and no knickers”

They present in designer gear, use Sunbeds, have Botox but struggle to buy decent food or pay bills

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/07/2025 19:50

What a strange thing to say!

I don't honestly care what somebody else wears, as long as it's not inappropriate. And I certainly don't care how anyone else chooses to keep their home.

We all have our own priorities.

The Op isn’t about people who struggle to buy food or pay bills though. She’s talking about people who don’t curate their furniture.

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:31

Perception is more important than reality?

I decorate because of how I'm perceived when people visit. If I had no visitors there is no point decorating. Same as wearing designer clothes. Perception

Edited

I'm allowed to paint the walls but I'm not allowed to put holes into the walls so no drills etc also no laminate flooring, it had to be vinyl if I didn't want carpets. I had to ask permission to put blinds up because it involved drilling and it was eventually agreed.

That she is considerable posher than everyone else on this thread.

Or so she thinks.

OP I may live in a council house, but at least I can spell, and I carefully proofread my posts.........
