AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

I am really weird I have carefully curated clothes and handbags. Beautifully presented in my perfectly curated house. I dress like a tramp. I buy things and never use them.

I do any painting in my house and I am terrible at it. It's definitely not properly decorated.

As a child my job was painting for my parent's small business, so have had lot of experience. Didn't realise I was learning a skill as was my contribution to the family. Often if you slow down in better light and prep well that makes a big difference. Doing it well takes ages. You don't have to of course and how you dress is not related to that choice.

For instance a new build kept with the plain white walls, no rugs no lamps no art

Maybe they are slowly saving to buy what they really like instead of cheap crap from Ikea. And they probably bought the designer clothes far before owning a house. Do they owe you money?

Oh bless her. She thinks she's "highly educated"...

Curated bat shit.

Just so long as it's decorative.

ConcernedOfClapham · 31/07/2025 19:54

AIBU to think those who start judgemental threads have very little going on in their lives so feel the need to denigrate other people’s decisions as to how they live their lives?

Is it a class thing?

Who said they should have a neutral pallete?? It could be pink and yellow but it's the effort that went into making a house a home

Do you know what makes my house a home?

Sitting in it, laughing and chatting with my boyfriend, sharing stories of our day and having cuddles.
As well as getting home from a day at work and my little black cat comes to greet me and sits on my knee for tickle time.
Having the comfort and joy of coming home to a little family that loves me, feeling safe here, is what makes my house a home.

Not sure why you quoted me @OceanStorm .

I can't spell either and have two Oxford degrees.
Mine was a jokey post not a criticism.

Shame no one taught you to be a nice person.

Dweetfidilove · 31/07/2025 19:56

@OceanStorm What is the class angle? I know persons in different social classes with nicely decorated homes and fine clothing, as well as either or none. How does your 'external perception' idea fit into class?

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:56

@Lucyweeks I use the app and you can't reply to post that have quotes

@OceanStorm I'm guessing you're wealthy

which I don't have a problem with

I just think it's the kind of theory a wealthy person would have

to curate everything properly in my flat would cost a lot and I'm guessing you wouldn't consider Ikea acceptable.

when you said about perception and reality, was it a question or a statement?

Emerald, I think you might be a bit of in your guesses about the OP.

I'm picturing lots and lots of grey in her curated house, accent colour mustard or teal, and some shiny/crystal bits.

I'm really hoping, as a Friday NightbDinners fan, that she has a Mercedes.

I’m also highly educated, I own my home too, paid my mortgage off at 36 years old. So, from one highly educated, home owning woman to another, you’re talking out of your arse and come across as a massive twat.

I'm also highly educated, thank you.

I do not appreciate the inference that I'm somehow lazy and stupid because I live in a council house.

DrySherry · 31/07/2025 19:57

"Highly educated" lol
Clearly not.

OP is upper class because she has art on her walls, but dresses in rags. Some people she knows are lower class because they have white walls and non curated furniture but wear designer clothes. Think that’s how it works.

I have bought an almost complete range of Farrow & Ball tester pots, and with a small spray gun for plastic models (which I bought from eBay) I have diluted these and sprayed all my clothes with colours which compliment my home.

Earlier today I was wearing a camisole top in Mauretanian Lifebelt with leggings in Corbyn's Beard (not literally!!!!) This evening I shall slip into Alaskan Glacier jim-jams with my favorite Hawaiin Lava foot warmer.

(One can see that we don't do Dulux, or that sort of thing, in this house!)

WearyAuldWumman · 31/07/2025 19:57

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 19:44

Sigh.
They're not free.
You have to pay rent.

Careful, OP. Your snobby side is very unattractive.

My dad owned his own home until Fife Council slapped a compulsory purchase order on the street in which we lived. The 'compensation' that he was given wouldn't have bought a used caravan.

One part of the street was demolished in order to provide space for a police station. Our part of the street became a car park.

My parents then paid full rent for a council house for the rest of their lives.

WearyAuldWumman · 31/07/2025 19:58

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 19:51

That she is considerable posher than everyone else on this thread.

Or so she thinks.

OP I may live in a council house, but at least I can spell, and I carefully proofread my posts.........

I can't decide whether she truly thinks that or is simply in character.

NetZeroZealot · 31/07/2025 19:58

My house is 500 years old and mostly furnished with inherited antiques. We did paint some of the walls when we moved in 20 years ago.

Is that properly decorated OP?

Mind you I don't buy designer clothes either - I am happier in M&S jeans most of the time.

K0OLA1D · 31/07/2025 19:59

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:43

Taxpayers money goes to councils to maintain and social housing. Also the opportunity cost of rent it out below market rate

Ah you're uninformed as well as judgemental.
