Immigration population up another 700k

Atallglassimdof · 30/07/2025 23:35

I understand that this country needs immigration but if you import 100,000s of low skilled workers, in their 30s and 40s, how are they going to fund their retirement or pay for their housing?

It just seems counterintuitive to bring loads of people into this country who will need considerable financial support ( housing benefits, pension credits) when they are no longer able to work, and don’t have the means to support themselves.

It does make you wonder....

Ahem.... might be daytime in Russia though 🤔

Russia, blah blah, Daily Fail blah blah blah, is that you Nigel Farage blah.

If it is the Russian ls that start these threads, even they are a lot more imaginative than these regurgitated predictable responses. At least try and be a bit more inventive with your responses even if you live in a bubble and cannot imagine that anyone is unhappy with these damaging levels of immigration.

It’s a valid question, and the short answer is that we do that as well. We employ and train graduates, but need experienced people to do the job while they’re learning (and to teach them). Even then though there’s a shortage of British graduates with the right skillsets and attitudes - despite all the news stories of supposedly excellent un/underemployed graduates, we still had to take half our grad intake from overseas last year.

We also tried setting up an apprenticeship for school leavers but it failed dismally - there was a serious attitude problem among the two intakes and we concluded that anyone who was any good must still be more keen on going to uni so refocused on graduates.

I also created (and put a huge amount of effort into) a direct recruitment campaign targeting British people without degrees but who could demonstrate other relevant skills or aptitude for the job. This was offered with flexible working - we can’t do term-time-only contracts but did offer PT days/hours around school times - but there just wasn’t the base I’d hoped there might be.

It’s a STEM-type job where numerical aptitude is important - I honestly think it’s the case that we just don’t value these skills enough. The PP who said we shouldn’t bother teaching people maths kind of proves that point, sadly.

Why do we have to do everything that we don't have the people for though?

I don't mean you in particular but in general, why?

The downside of overpopulating the country is already apparent in supply and demand of homes.

At what point does the discomfort become so great that we stop?

Trains and roads are already unbearable in commuting times and have been for 15 years at least.

When you look closely at the OBR data they appear to have a short term view on increasing the tax take by bringing in more people every year without considering the impact on quality of life.

Perhaps It’s worth considering if it’s actually you who live in a bubble and that there are many people who are happy and don’t feel the country has been “damaged” by immigration?

Not that many though. It's one of the number one concerns in opinion polls. I bet it's number one at the moment.

Well that's obvious isn't it because the door is wide open.

Polling suggests you are wrong though.

That's really interesting - thank you for taking the time to reply. I did a maths degree a few years ago at a crap university and certainly my cohort found it very hard to find grad scheme positions after - I think some felt let down after choosing STEM because they thought it would guarantee a well paying career, even if they weren't that interested in the subject. The teaching was dire though and some students should probably not have been accepted on the course.

Something's obviously going wrong somewhere along the line in education if we are not producing enough high quality graduates for the UK workforce when more and more young people are going to uni.

Not saying they are all low skilled workers but a fair number are… care home workers for example.

Care home workers are vitally needed, and pay their taxes. Not sure youve thought your 'arguement' very well

Way outnumbered by the people who are unhappy.

Yeah that’s why Reform are leading in the polls. Because people are ecstatic with these levels of immigration. Absolutely doing cartwheels.

Like I say. Bubble.

FartyAnimal · 31/07/2025 18:11

8 people own half the world's wealth, and you are worried about a few brown people. You are very very dim OP.

TheGentleButFirmMadonna · 31/07/2025 18:13

Many of us inter marry with British and our kids are automatically British

TheGentleButFirmMadonna · 31/07/2025 18:15

I also forgot that us white, female, blonde and blue eyed aren't counted as migrants.

Hiptothisjive · 31/07/2025 18:15

Seriously crack a book. If you legally immigrate (because you said immigrants not refugees) you may need know a few things.

It costs THOUSANDS of pounds to legally migrate. And it takes years. It doesn’t happen overnight. There is a huge amount of paperwork.

You need to be able to show how you will support yourself for two years or show how your sponsor here will do this - bank account proof, employment records etc

Immigrants aren’t entitled to any benefits including housing for years while on leave to remain status. Yes you can use health services and your kids can go to school. Thats it.

So maybe stop believing all f the rhetoric because it’s just wrong.

How do I know? Yeah I went through it. I know. I stood in the home office line and handed over 27 documents to be approved. At least three times. And I’m from a Commonwealth English speaking country with a degree. So again crack a book.

I think that being a care worker is actually a highly skilled job. Would you like to do it @Atallglassimdof?

It's the biggest skilled job. That's your relatives and their lives you are talking about being on the line....sort yourselves on that one. My patents are looked at home in another country, bathed, fed and all that by the relatives who love them

The polls say otherwise. Take a look at the YouGov trackers. For example 44% thought that immigration was too high in Mar 2022. As of 14th July 2025, that is 73%.

Those who are questioning the current state of immigration (legal and illegal) are not living in a bubble.

Interesting. Because across that time frame, immigration figures are down.

Which suggests people questioning it very much are living in a bubble - a bubble of xenophobia and racism, fed to them by right wing commentators with their own agendas.

What a crock of shit. I know lots of immigrants. My Dr and dentist are both immigrants as are two of my consultants. I know “nice Europeans” in similar roles. You don’t sound like you have embraced the kind of values you profess to admire. You seem to have brought your own prejudice with you. How depressing

Your doctor and dentist!! Lol

The poster is talking about some bog standard immigrants who may perceive a free for all, few boundaries, wont be questioned or challenged when spitting on the bus, cat calling girls, pushing in, not integrating, roaring along on scooters to do their latest drug deal, sitting around the 'barber' shop all day.

Not your bloody doctor and dentist!!

You'd need to ask those employers why they aren't doing it.

I work in manufacturing. Number of openings, just one person turned up. Middle aged. Not young

UK worker visa threshold is £ 41.7k. You might be eligible for lower rate either £30 k or so if you're under 26 years old. In 2022, 1.3 million unfilled jobs across various sectors.

How are so many care workers then given they wouldnt earn that much?

Weirdly sounds like people think there are no indigenous (ha!) people who display these unpleasant traits.

'The Russian' would have better grammar and far more interesting vocabulary, one feels.
