...the house with a sleeping bag, tent, camping stove, billy and teabags. Not just yet, but before dark. We look right down across the sea...I hope the surges won't be too big, AIBU to keep you posted?

Where are you?

Homebird8 · 30/07/2025 05:28

They’re saying around midnight for the strongest surges. Stay safe OP.

Monty27 · 30/07/2025 05:31

Where are you @pollyglot?
Stay safe people.

BreakingBroken · 30/07/2025 05:34

I have a friend living on Haida Gwaii, she’s on alert.

pollyglot · 30/07/2025 05:37

We're in the Far North of NZ, very exposed to the Pacific and its vagaries.

Hope all goes well for you and everyone affected. 💕

Identityisacrisiscantyousee · 30/07/2025 05:49

Stay safe @pollyglot

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 05:51

Yes, keep us posted and stay safe.

Donotgogentle · 30/07/2025 05:53

You sound well prepared!

Nestingbirds · 30/07/2025 05:55

i hope you are warm and safe. It’s winter there too. My friend lives in NZ and it only happened once whilst she lived in the north but she said it was so scary. What is the time there now?

pollyglot · 30/07/2025 05:58

It's 5 pm. The tsunami alert keeps beeping on the phone...

OP posts:
mjf981 · 30/07/2025 05:59

Doesn't sound like anywhere has been hit too bad yet thankfully.

SpidersAreShitheads · 30/07/2025 06:12

I’ve been following this on the news all night from the safety of the UK.

It’s not looking too bad at the moment although of course the peak hasn’t yet hit. Keeping everything crossed that the bigger waves don’t materialise and everyone potentially affected around the world stays safe.

Hope you stay warm and dry @pollyglot - thoughts are with you 💐

JustAMum35 · 30/07/2025 06:15

@pollyglot Stay safe OP! And anyone else in an alert area!

QuaverQuanta · 30/07/2025 06:17

Things like this blow my mind a bit - the magnitude of what the planet can do. I hope it's all one big overreaction for you and nothing comes of it, it sounds scary. Things like this make me grateful that I live in the boring UK with it's no earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes or venomous spiders (shudder) 😖

BlankBlankBlank14 · 30/07/2025 06:19

Sitting with you virtually OP.

taxidriver · 30/07/2025 06:21

K0OLA1D · 30/07/2025 06:26

Are your neighbours doing the same? I think I would try.

How scary for you.

jay55 · 30/07/2025 06:28

Hope all is well for you.

mindingmyown37 · 30/07/2025 06:32

DP brother lives in Hawaii, Honolulu , we’ve heard from him, he’s at a friends house who lives in a block of flats. Luckily his dc don’t live there and his wife is currently over here. But 1dc does live in Seattle. Just waiting to hear from here because I know they have warnings too.

TanteRose · 30/07/2025 06:43

Blimey, OP, I don’t realise the Russian quake would affect as far as NZ Shock

I’m in Japan, south of Tokyo, and we have a tsunami alert across the whole of the east coast Sad
Up to now, there have been a couple of rounds of tsunami waves - it’s not just one wave, it comes two or three or more times over a 24 hour period. However they have been small (under 1m) - where I am, they’ve closed the beach but it seems that mass evacuation won’t be necessary…fingers crossed!

Take care everyone!

How dramatic and exciting!

Is the sea looking ferocious?

Seems like you have a plan. Are there any pictures?

DH and I were saying this last night, we were watching something on tv which had coverage of wildfires. And when we watched the new Twister movie.
We love to moan about the weather here but I'll take the grey 20' day today over a tsunami.
Hope you are ok @pollyglot
