...the house with a sleeping bag, tent, camping stove, billy and teabags. Not just yet, but before dark. We look right down across the sea...I hope the surges won't be too big, AIBU to keep you posted?

I hope they are safe 🩵

You are safer in deep water than on land.

For those saying they didn’t realise NZ would be affected, it’s quite close the that part of Russia, I think we forget how huge Russia is and how far east it goes.
Good luck @pollyglot

‘Quite close’ being over six thousand miles apart on the other side of the pacific in opposite hemispheres…

How dramatic and exciting!

Is the sea looking ferocious?

Seems like you have a plan. Are there any pictures?

In fairness less exciting if your house gets washed away and your family drowned.

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 30/07/2025 10:00

I was in Chch when they had the tsunami in Kaikoura (there were one or two deaths up there).

All I remember is

  • the tsunami sirens blaring ALL NIGHT
  • the instant gridlock in Chch as people all tried fleeing their homes by car at the same time. As you know, Chch is flat. It also happened along the marine parade, people stuck like sitting ducks. We think we are prepared but...

Do you have tsunami sirens going up there?

Also. I want to move up north for the weather. What's the job situation like? Only answer if the mundane chat takes your mind off things.

pontipinemum · 30/07/2025 10:06

Getting away from the coast does seem like a good idea even if it does end up being small.

Hope you are all safe. We visited NZ about 12 years ago now, loved the Bay of Islands, we stayed in Paihia I think.

OK I have updated myself.

Hawaii and Japan are experiencing 4.3m of Tsunami at the moment. Thats in the middle of the "Threat to Life and Marine" Scale.

NZ is expected to have 0.3-1m waves in certain areas- this comes under the "Beach and Marine areas" being at threat. This is why we were probably advised to move away from areas, and people who live in their boats to seek shelter overnight.

Japan was predicted 3m waves but as of just now, the highest has been 1.7m in Hokkaido, which is the closest island to Russia.
Tokyo and Yokohama had surges of about 30 or 40cms.

LBFseBrom · 30/07/2025 09:31

What are 'the surges'?

Seems a bizarre thing to do, I prefer being comfortable at home with indoor plumbing but if you like camping, go for it.

Hmm, who wouldn't prefer to be safe at home rather than trying to avoid a tsunami? Hard to say

OK but they are in Hawai'i is the concern. The Pacific Islands will still be at huge risk. Fingers crossed it dissapates to a manageable level before it get to them.

Edit: My mistake its 4.3ft reported not meters.

Tokyo bay is very sheltered. Thank you Chiba for taking the brunt of it for us 🙏

It's been quite the talk of the town here today. I hope everyone is safe. One of my friends in Shizuoka had to leave her house on the coast.

RustyBear · 30/07/2025 11:08

I'm watching this closely as my sister & BIL are currently on a cruise ship going along the coast from Anchorage to Vancouver, and I’m not sure where they’ve got to by now. Hopefully they will have headed out to deeper waters…

abs12 · 30/07/2025 11:08

Don't be dramatic. We get phone alerts about the price of butter. Go to bed.

How are any of us Kiwis supposed to sleep soundly now you have recklessly mentioned the price of butter? Panic stations hehe

mbosnz · 30/07/2025 11:37

What's the price of 1kg of mainland colby at the moment?

About $5 more than it should be! As for Tasty, at nearly $20, definitely worth a CD alert ⚠️

@pollyglot Stay safe, thinking of you.

myplace · 30/07/2025 13:30

Hopefully the peak is past for you now, OP. Hope all is well for you and yours.

My youngest dc is on a ship heading from Australia to Japan. I'm beyond worried.

So disrespectful saying it's exciting. People living in the areas that could be hit are extremely worried.

They should be fine - the tsunami waves are created when the seabed suddenly gets more shallow, if they are over deep water there won't be much if anything to see. The destruction occurs when the energy passing through the deep sea suddenly hits the edge of a continental shelf (eg: land) and the water gets loads shallower very quickly.

I'm in Washington State. Ocean is a little choppy this morning but nothing to write home about. Nothing to see here!

NewbieYou · 30/07/2025 16:50

We’re in Lima, tsunami due any minute now and I’m sat in bed with a coffee. Pretty sure it won’t go higher than the cliffs so should be fine.
