...the house with a sleeping bag, tent, camping stove, billy and teabags. Not just yet, but before dark. We look right down across the sea...I hope the surges won't be too big, AIBU to keep you posted?

Oh blimey - my brother is on a boat which was damaged in a recent storm in NZ, repairing it. He is notorious for not keeping up with news, I have messaged him to say get off the boat!

mbosnz · 30/07/2025 08:26

Aroha nui, pollyglot, and of course, kia kaha! Jeeze, tsunami risk on top of the rains - it's all a bit much, isn't it?! Take care, stay warm and dry. My heart is always in NZ, with you all. . .

HoppingPavlova · 30/07/2025 08:26

@Takoneko I’m confused by this. My understanding is that tsunami waves don’t have “faces” so they can’t be surfed. They aren’t like a big normal wave, they are tidal surges. it’s also why the previous poster’s question about the sea looking ferocious was a bit silly, they don’t make the sea look generally choppy and ferocious and the waves aren’t the big, crashing kind

No idea what you are on about. They are not surfing tsunami waves. We all know tsunami waves are different. We are in Australia so we (thankfully) will not be affected by a tsunami per se in terms of tsunami waves. What happens, is that, due to whatever goes on elsewhere in oceans with tsunami’s, depending where they are, it changes our SURF waves (as in increases them) on certain stretches of our coast. Our surfers are surfing surf waves, not tsunami waves, which are entirely different and cannot be surfed. So, they get excited by the larger surf waves that can occur as a by-product of tsunami’s occurring elsewhere. Isn’t really that confusing.

How dramatic and exciting!

Is the sea looking ferocious?

Seems like you have a plan. Are there any pictures?

What an awful thing to say!

Wishing you and your neighbours all the best,
Do you live in a populous area? I’m trying to imagine everyone up on the same hill, or inland to the same town.

Thanks, myplace. No, the North is very sparsely populated and we have no near neighbours. All good, though. The last tsunami warning came to little.

@user1492757084 what is actually wrong with you? Do you think the rest of the world exists as a form of entertainment for you? Are you this lacking in real life?

Good luck @pollyglot and I hope the warnings don’t come to anything

I’m happy to be corrected if you have evidence to the contrary but I really don’t think the two things are linked. I can’t find anything online to suggest that a tsunami in one place can improve surf waves (which are created by wind) somewhere else. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. I’d be happy to learn something new today.

@pollyglot please stay safe x sending safe thoughts to anyone caught up on this.

shellyleppard · 30/07/2025 08:45

@OldieButBaddie any news on your brother?? Sending hugs 🫂

RampantIvy · 30/07/2025 08:46

I hope everyone is safe.

Is it my imagination or has the world become more seismically active this year? I keep hearing about earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

WhyCantISayFork · 30/07/2025 08:47

Hoping everything is ok there for you all ❤️

My youngest dc is on a ship heading from Australia to Japan. I'm beyond worried.

So disrespectful saying it's exciting. People living in the areas that could be hit are extremely worried.

I hope they are safe 🩵

I’m in Europe and wasn’t online or watching the news last night. Awoke to this thread and am hoping you’re all safe.

If they're away from the coastline they'll be safe. Family friends of mine survived the 2004 tsunami this way. (Their house and property was completely destroyed but they survived physically completely unscathed and were incredibly lucky.)

So try not to worry too much if possible. 💐

WhatShoes4me · 30/07/2025 09:24

Thanks everyone.

Sending best wishes to those near danger areas 🙏❤️

TokyoSushi · 30/07/2025 09:27

Oh gosh OP, so far it doesn't look too bad, long may it continue, take care all of those in warning areas.

LBFseBrom · 30/07/2025 09:31

What are 'the surges'?

Seems a bizarre thing to do, I prefer being comfortable at home with indoor plumbing but if you like camping, go for it.

Did you not read the thread title? The OP was in an area with a Tsunami warning. I’m sure they would have preferred to be inside too, but there was a risk their house might be swept away by the flooding.

There are a couple of truly batshit posts on this thread. But there doesn't seem to be a grain of comprehension involved in this one.

grumpygrape · 30/07/2025 09:38

I left a part of my heart in NZ. Saw Tsunami markings on some of the roads.
Best wishes for everyone to stay safe. 🤗

2021x · 30/07/2025 09:46

In Welly. Nearly shat myself with the alert I luckily didn't have my hot cup of tea in my hand when I got it. My friend was a nurse on an elderly ward and everyones phone went off at the same time.

I was more worried about Europe being such a large quake, but apprently you guys didn't feel it.

I’m sure the poor people who died and or lost everyone on St. Stephen’s day in 2004 would not have called them surges you absolute loon! Hopefully you and yours will be safe OP. And it’s good that ye got the alert on your phone too.

ChillieChicky · 30/07/2025 09:51

Do some people on this thread not understand what a tsunami is ffs, I’m sure everyone would rather be at home but there is a chance the tsunami will destroy the house, op and everyone affected I hope your all ok and safe

Stay safe. NZ is a good bit away but the power of earthquakes and tides and water is huge. We really have no idea of the scale of the power.

Edited

Please look up what happened on St. Stephen’s day in 2004. Sadly that will show you just how powerful a tsunami is.
