To let my 8 year old daughter shave half her head

My daughter currently has a bob and she has decided she wants her hair cut shorter. We have looked together at pictures online and she likes the type were half the head is shaved and the remaining hair has a undercut. It feels quite drastic but I am tempted to let her as it is her hair we have discussed once it is done if she doesn't like it she will have to wait for it to grow out and she is adamant that is fine.

What else do you think an 8 year old should be "experimenting" with?

Hair and clothes.....

What a weird question.

BestZebbie · 28/07/2025 20:26

You only have 5 weeks for it to grow before school so it might be better to have a longer shave on the undercut part if your school doesn't allow them - in case she will need the whole hairstyle evened out before she goes back.

MyUmberSeal · 28/07/2025 20:27

I think it sounds great. I’d let my dd do it, hair grows back, so why the hell not.

WhereAreMyKids · 28/07/2025 20:28

Check your schools policies before committing.

What else do you think an 8 year old should be "experimenting" with?

Art, music, fun, games, clothes, all sorts of things.

Why do you think 8 yo should be told that harmless and fun things shouldn’t be done?

My DD has had lots of wacky hair, including the shortest girl’s hair in her class, probably school. She’s 14 now, achingly boring, long bob, no piercings, no tats, no substances to the best of my knowledge.

The girls whose parents made them have the ubiquitous long hair, not all as cool as DD.

noworklifebalance · 28/07/2025 20:29

My kids had tattoo transfers when infant school age. Fortunately it wasn’t a slippery slope to heroin by year 6.
Now mid to late teens - not even a piercing and very very conventional hair.

Hallywally · 28/07/2025 20:30

It’s only hair- it’ll grow back.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 28/07/2025 20:30

I have my hair buzzed to the top on one side and undercut on the other, and I hold down a perfectly respectable corporate job. As long as she is not going to be in violation of the school's haircut policy in September, let her have the cut she wants.

Clothes
Food
Sport
Hobbies
Friends

Everything really! An eight year old should be confident and happy to try all manner of new things. That's what childhood is for!

Branleuse · 28/07/2025 20:30

My daughter had that hairstyle at about that age.
No big deal.

I would love to have similar but would look like I am having a midlife crisis

Embrace the midlife crisis and have the haircut you want!

Why not? Should her daughter look like the patriarchal beauty standard of long hair? Why should she?

Who said anything about long hair or the bloody patriarchy? She's bloody 8 - what next? Eyebrow piercing and a couple of Fuck Me tattoos?

You sound reasonable.

As long as you aren't actually having the crisis, so what? Fuck 'em. The joy of midlife is not having to give a shit what anyone else thinks about a look that makes you happy.

I am slowly - that style would be quite a radical departure from what I have now!

DoorOpening · 28/07/2025 20:36

Yes! Just let her. It’s fine. Good for her

Neverthesame · 28/07/2025 20:38

Not at 8, no. It’s too extreme and I think she is too young for experimenting with hairstyles.

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 28/07/2025 20:38

I had the Frankie from Saturdays hair cut when I was younger.. I was an adult but I wished I hadn’t as my hair is thick and I really regretted it! If her hair isn’t too thick and she can style it well then why not!

Lavenderfowl · 28/07/2025 20:38

DS currently has highlights for exactly this reason - he wanted to try them and he's booked in to have a school-compliant short cut the day before school starts, so they will vanish completely...

Cappuccino5 · 28/07/2025 20:38

I think you’re being ridiculous to even consider it. To answer the raging feminists - no, I wouldn’t let my son shave his head at that age either. To be frank it’s an awfully chavvy look and I certainly would not be encouraging it. I was quietly devastated my when sister allowed my then 9yo nephew to have half of his head shaved as a summer treat.. conveniently the week before he was due to be page boy at my wedding!

Don’t be so bloody ridiculous

Where on earth is that laugh emoji when you need it?!🤣

Delphiniumandlupins · 28/07/2025 20:39

To those that think this is a bad idea for an 8 year old, what age would be ok for this hairstyle?

Soonenough · 28/07/2025 20:43

It's not shaving the head just an undercut. My daughter had this a bit older though. It's a hard upkeep so will probably be fine by school time .

Missymini · 28/07/2025 20:44

This is the haircut she would like.

When said child is old enough to attend the hairdresser solo and fund their own haircuts. I wouldn’t be paying for my child to look like that
