Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 14:57

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

Yes I was fully aware I opened another bottle, I was just enjoying it so much at the time. I am
nit enjoying today though

Did your parents have some too?

I can more understand not counting if everyone was drinking so you had a bit out of several bottles and only realised today it added up to two bottles iyswim.

I mean don’t get too upset about it if it’s a one off! But just keep an eye that it doesn’t become a regular thing.

I think the problem with threads like this is that you do get people who do this regularly posting about it on MN seeking validation, and leaving out vital information. So everyone is really on their guard not to say “oh yea it’s fine” without all the info.

UrbanOasis · 27/07/2025 16:34

Unfortunately I could do this, but I don't have a healthy relationship with alcohol

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/07/2025 16:34

Growlybear83 · 27/07/2025 16:26

How do the French manage? Many French people drink vast quantities of wine but according g to Mumsnet, they are all teeny tiny.

BMI does impact the effects of alcohol on a person.
A person who has a low bmi will receive a smaller amount of medication, as the effects are there, alcohol is similar.
It's just a fact.
OP, put it behind you, you're going through a lot and entitled to a blow-out.
You'll feel better tomorrow.

No, thankfully didn’t message the ex, he is already with somebody new so that wouldn’t have gone down too well

After a month?

What is it with these men???

BlondieMuver · 27/07/2025 16:35

No, I've never drunk 2 bottles of wine. Don't think I've ever managed 1.

But I wouldn't ever drink during the day, or when cooking or on my own.

As a one off, it's not that big a deal.

Sunnymysunshine · 27/07/2025 16:37

In which case @Isitchristmasyett get yourself some pringles and pepsi today that always sorts me right out 🤣, and I don't think you need to go to aa just yet despite what all the goody 2 shoes may say. You fed your family and had a drink .

Outrageous!!

Its coke not Pepsi that’s needed 🤣

Oblomov25 · 27/07/2025 16:39

I've always been able to drink a lot, from a young age eg at uni, even if I don't drink fir ages I still can.

When out for the day I can easily drink a bottle of wine then a few cocktails, don't get drunk, no hangover. I generally don't get hangovers, never really did, even at uni 30 years ago.

Like pp said MN'ers primarily are very minimal drinkers, a wee sherry af Christmas. Think nothing of it op.

MN is the WORST place to come when you’ve got the hangover fear @Isitchristmasyett. If you so much as look at a bottle of wine you’re an alcoholic. There’s zero nuance and plenty of hyperbolic judgement.

I have definitely had a bottle or two to myself in the past, when I had the metabolism of a much younger person. I’d do it maybe once a year.

The fear I used to get afterwards - much like yours today - made it not worth it. I’ve found the further into peri I get the worse the hanxiety gets so I rarely drink now.

I do miss the taste and buzz of a good red on a cold day whilst cooking and chilling out at home. I wish there were as many options for that as alcohol free gin!

You aren’t a terrible mum for cutting a bit loose on a Saturday at a rough time.

Sunnymysunshine · 27/07/2025 16:41

@BlankBlankBlank14 ooh I don't know, i used to be all for coke but I do like a pepsi now, unless I get the cherry shit by accident, the cherry isnt written large enough on the bottle! Ive done it 3 times in about a month 😁

The cherry stuff should be banned, it’s awful!!

Hi

ive worked in alcohol services . We talk about dependency rather than alcoholic. And it’s a spectrum.
the issue isn’t the one off, it’s what you drink normally week to week.

I don’t think people realise the damage alcohol does, it’s not just the liver .

My concern would be that you were able to function after drinking this amount.

Im not judging and I’m not asking you to say what you drink each week. Just leaving this info here for you or anyone else to take a look at .

It depends, what percent was it? I've had some as low as 5% which would be easy to do! Its like drinking juice!
Have also drank 2 bottles at 14% in the past and I really thought I was going to die the next day. Never again lol

If this is an increase , look at what the triggers are . Sounds like you are going through a difficult break up . In my work events like that can be a trigger to drinking increasing and staying high . So perhaps look at ways to manage the difficult situation . It’s a bad time for you , look at what support you can access around your emotions, what you can do that helps.
again, no judgement . I’ve worked with many women who go through traumatic or painful times and become dependent .

You need to go to rehab, Op - NOW

I mean as long as you're not doing it every Sunday why not? I could drink two bottles of wine over six hours, I'd be reminiscent of a cave troll the next day if I did, but that never stopped me in my twenties lmao.

Inb4 people come in and start accusing you of being a rampant alcoholic. Didn't you know on Mumsnet you're a raging alchie if you don't get horribly squiffy from a single teeny tiny glass of fizz?

That sort of hyperbole about (invented) responses isn't helpful. I'm sure over the course of a long or longish social event many MNetters could get through 2 bottles of wine. That's a world away from what the OP seems to be describing.

Zov · 27/07/2025 16:55

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 27/07/2025 16:13

I’ll drink two bottles of wine tonight if that will make you feel better OP. Clutch your pearls everyone! Oh and I might make a Sunday dinner on Tuesday! The horror.

It's not 'pearl clutching' for people to think/say that necking TWO bottles of wine in one sitting is too much FFS! Hmm Not everyone enjoys getting rat arsed, and nursing a hangover for 2 days, and risking damaging their liver.

Defensive much? Wink This type of thread always amuses me. You can see the binge drinkers - who drink far too much alcohol - shooting onto the thread with their lame sarcasm, thinking they're hilarious, with their attacks on ANYone who isn't a big alcohol drinker.

As I said, defensive much?!
