Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

Well OP, I think that it can happen when the “vibe” is right. When I read your post I could see me in the kitchen, enjoying cooking, music on and looking forward to having family over for dinner. The first bottle can disappear easily when you are busy and happy, the second bottle would seem right but be seriously regretted later. You live and learn. If it isn’t a habit don’t stress about it.

Yes it can be so easily done, little top ups consistently and before you know it... I've been out at dos where glasses topped up and worked out I'd had about 3 bottles of wine (after and eve) plus cocktails! Steady and with eating and dancing.

I really wouldn't beat yourself up about it as you realise this was unusual.

Flozle · 28/07/2025 19:15

Probably I could over six hours. Other nights I can take six hours to down one glass. If it’s not a regular occurrence then you’re probably fine. If you’re doing it frequently then maybe you need to reassess. But the pearl clutchers will tell you otherwise.

I will not be doing this again in a hurry, feel absolutely awful

Which? Having two bottles of wine or coming to MN to be told you're an alchy.

I have had 2 bottles over the course of a day out with friends and felt dreadful the next day. It's not a big deal OP.

VickiG85 · 28/07/2025 19:33

Welcome to being judged.

if you can drink two bottles to yourself and it’s not a regular occurrence, what’s the harm.
i don’t think I could solo, but certainly with pals.
enjoy it and if you want to do it again, go for it. Ignore all the ‘you have a problem’ posts - life is for living and it’s hard enough at the mo so if this is what you enjoy, occasionally 😉, have fun. if it’s all the time, perhaps cut down a little

NotOvertheWorstofit · 28/07/2025 19:42

Some of the comments on this thread are hilarious 😆.

I grew up in a large family of scousers who drank wine most nights whilst having a sing along with the guitar. Did we drink more than we should some nights? Sure! But it doesn’t mean we were alcoholics.

I've just recently lost my Dad and have probably had a fair few nights where I've drank more than I should but it’s helped get me though some rough evenings.

DO NOT feel guilty in the slightest OP. Life is hard and we all have our different ways of release. Don’t doubt yourself or feel the need to look for external validation. Enjoy the creature comforts today. Nice food, lovely shower and a good film. Sod spending the day making yourself feel worse with guilt. Embrace it and indulge in some tlc. Life is short and no need to waste any time berating ourselves for feeling good in the moment. Hugs.

Orangeandpinknails · 28/07/2025 19:42

I'm a large lady at 18 stone and 2 bottles would make me drunk! However I'm not judging you, I've found I'm drinking more recently... did you have guests around? Or just alone? Are you happy with your life?

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 19:41

I just don’t agree with kicking people whilst they are already down

That’s honestly how some people get their thrills. Ignore them. It says more about them than you. You sound like a perfectly normal human being, muddling though the shit show that it life. Just do your thing and don’t beat yourself up over something most people have done at some point in their lives.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 28/07/2025 19:52

I couldn't drink one, let alone two

Congratulations.

Soberinthecity · 28/07/2025 19:57

Quite easily and very, very regularly - I couldn’t always though.

As my name suggests I’m sober and I have been for many years. Two bottles of wine is a huge quantity of alcohol to consume in one sitting so you obviously have quite a high tolerance for it already. I’d keep an eye on it for sure.

Anyway, it’s not the amount you drink or how often that makes you an alcoholic.

VerbenaGirl · 28/07/2025 19:59

I don’t think that two bottles of wine is that shocking. So much depends on how and why it’s been drunk. Gradual consumption over time at the weekend while cooking and eating, as long as it’s not getting regular, is not a big deal. Depends a lot on your tolerance for wine as well.

Cece92 · 28/07/2025 20:02

If you never drink 2 bottles of wine usually and it’s a one off you’re far from an alcoholic. You were cooking and enjoying your wine. It’s hardly breaking bad. Stop being hard on yourself. X

Kitkat2065 · 28/07/2025 20:05

Glass when you start cooking, glass mid cooking when the veg goes on, glass with the meal, glass with the washing up, glass when you sit down and relax.....might as well finish the second bottle before bed! Easily done. As long as it's not every day ..... No problem! Can I come to yours for lunch 🤣

Bluedenimdoglover · 28/07/2025 20:11

You know it's too much, so why ask anyone else? Up to you what you do, but you can't expect sympathy for something you chose to do.

WaterOfADucksBack · 28/07/2025 20:12

I dont drink hardly at all now but in a certain time of my life id have a bottle of wine before going out! No idea how.
You said its rare. Perhaps you've stuff on your mind. Dont overthink it and just avoid two bottles in the future.
If you are ever worried then there plenty of helplines out there 😉 .

GoldOP · 28/07/2025 20:15

If you started drinking early and it’s not something you do regularly I can’t see the issue. I managed to polish off 2 bottles of Prosecco on Xmas day over the course of about 8 hours, haven’t even finished off 1 bottle in one go since so not like I’m doing it every weekend.

Booklover2021 · 28/07/2025 20:19

Christ the responses on here!

You haven't done anything wrong, you opened another bottle because you were enjoying your day and (from what I can establish) deserved it after a very recent break up.

You woke up today feeling ropey and regretted it. Lesson learned.

You're not an alcoholic, you don't need to beat yourself up about this (as apparently MN are doing that for you).

I think you had what we all call "hanxiety"! I've had it, it sucks, but no, you're not a bad mum xxxx you're human

Dear OP,

Don't beat yourself up over this, I think you already know you over did the alcohol consumption.

As for your situation (separated a month ago & ex is already in another relationship), it's not nice & it's not fair. You have a lot to deal with & I hope you are ok.

Do you have a compassionate friend who would make a Sunday roast for you & the children ?Rather than you coping alone, cooking & downing wine. The end of a relationship is upsetting & draining.... you need support.

I hope things work out for you OP.

Take care of yourself x

Elephant788 · 28/07/2025 20:25

Enjoyed that did you.... although your liver won't thank you for it. There is no such thing as one off as far as liver poisoning is concerned. The fact you can drink 2 bottles, by yourself when not even at party, that's dangerous behaviour and probably you're an alcoholic. You obviously expecting this sort of comment anyway, so no shocker there, otherwise why would you come on here and say such unreasonable thing! Are you a mum, hope your kids are grown and have flown the nest!

But..ahem...each to their own.

Lilsami · 28/07/2025 20:27

It all depends on other things like was this a one of. Do you drink everyday? If you can't go without atleast one a day you have a drink problem. People think drinking alot everyday makes you an alcoholic but it's not the case.

Jeeez people on Mumsnet love an opportunity to look down on someone. Get yourself to AA pronto and never do it again.

drink lots of water and don’t give it another thought. Nothing bad happened.

This. I don't drink madly but went away at weekend where I discovered a thing called baby Guinness shots. Om nom nom. I had 5 of those and lagers. I was nicely marinated 😭😂

borntoblossom · 28/07/2025 20:29

It's probably less than what would be consumed in a 90 minute bottomless brunch tbh! I say have your fun kitchen party for 1, as long as it's not a regular thing (which I'm guessing it won't be after the suffering today!)

My favourite choice of tipple for that sort of thing is 2 large bottles of VK alcopop, the caffeine also helps with the house cleaning 😂
