I’m early 20’s, and to be honest am a bit stuck on career choices. My dream is to become a forensic psychologist, however the current job market in this subject is terrible, and I’m paranoid about wasting time and money, over several years for a degree/s which I will end up not using!

AIBU to ask what your career is?

Deputy of a secure children’s home.

What do the teachers hate so much about teaching? I’ve been thinking of going into it myself.

Can you do an AMA please

Investment banking. It pays very well, but it’s dull, monotonous work and standard to be made redundant every 7-8 years. I’ve advised DC against - despite the very nice lifestyle it’s provided them with.

What do you think they should do instead?

user1478188491 · 28/07/2025 23:36

Pharmacist love it 😊

Cantabulous · 28/07/2025 23:38

Educational consultant, ie I write exams for professional bodies. Love it, well paid too. I expect AI will overtake me soon.

I've worked for a scheme previously, supporting the host carers! Great job you're doing there. I too think it's bonkers how little known it is.

My DP's dad was in this scheme too. Spent a few years in foster care in his 50s, but then went into a residential home in the end anyway.

Civil servant in a really interesting department (imo!), I've done lots of different roles across 3 different departments so if you aren't sure what you want to do it's a great place to be to move around and try different things. Senior enough to have the flexibility to run my teams how I want and take on projects that interest me but not toooo senior that the pressure of responsiblity is too much - sideways moves have really paid off in terms of career progression which is something that wasn't really on my radar when I first entered the working world.

Did you join through the grad scheme? If not, any tips on how to get in? Or how to find people in the civil service who would share what it’s like to work there?

Care worker looking after elderly people in their own homes. Been doing it 30 years and I absolutely love it. The hours are very long and the pay is appalling though.

It would be fascinating to get a snapshot of a totally different job. I could work alongside an investment banker for a week, then she could come out with me on my care rounds for a week 😂.

Love the idea of doing a week alongside someone at a different job, then they do a week with you. Sort of like exchange student programme, but for jobs.

I'm a museum assistant at a small NT property.

I'm responsible for visitor experience, children's events, building maintenance and various other things.

Best job I've ever had. After 10 years I still wake up thinking I'm going for a day out at a museum!

I would love this!

Yes! This would make great tv, and be educational fun!

Primary teacher - I re-trained when my dcs started school. I work in a nice school with supportive leadership. It is a lot of work but my team is great and I find it very fulfilling. I also enjoy the creative aspect of finding ways to make information and skills meaningful for the children.

Having said that I am on Summer hols (so quite relaxed) and term-time me is much busier. But my dcs are adults now and I have the time to focus on work. I get in to school around 7.15/7.30 and leave around 4,00/4.30 and do a couple of hours work at the weekend.

As I have been in the same year group for a while I am very familiar with the curriculum and have most of the resources.

The parents are mostly really nice and supportive - with the odd difficult one.

Meltyourpopsicle · 29/07/2025 10:03

Social worker in mental health. I love it. I did a graduate scheme and it took a year with an additional year to turn the PG Dip into a masters. But I had lots of experience working in MH before this. I know it’s what I want to do forever.

Why would medicine be any better?

Presumably because there are fields of medicine where the doctor is not hunched over for 8 hours a day.

For what it’s worth the dentists I know seem to like their job, but I do live in an expensive part of the US where dentists make an absolute killing. Maybe they’d have less job satisfaction if they weren’t earning north of half a million dollars a year.

Working in the UK in the NHS as a doctor can be considered slave labour. The pay is terrible (no wonder they are on strike), the plumber down the road can earn way more and the working standards are just horrendous. There are no perks in the job.

Probation Officer but I’m prison based. It’s very different to the community and with your interests OP you may find it’s an interesting career path for you.

Tax Specialist, love it (despite the challenges in dealing with HMRC).

Learning Technologist. I make all those online learning systems work and I teach teachers how to teach using technology.

I have had careers in teaching and in financial technology. I’ve taken a pay cut to work in my current job but it’s strictly 9-5 and I can cycle to work.

Covidwoes · 29/07/2025 21:00

Primary school teacher. Nightmare of a job full time if you have your own kids, but manageable part time in the right school. I’m very lucky not to have to worry about childcare in the holidays too.
