To wonder why there isn’t more uproar about Sudan?

Sudan- where the actual worst humanitarian crisis in the world is happening right now. War, starvation, displacement of millions of people, suffering on a scale like nowhere else in the world. And yet it’s being virtually ignored. There have been maybe half a dozen threads about Sudan on mumsnet in the last year or so, compared with dozens discussing Israel/Gaza. On social media, for every one post I see mentioning Sudan, I have probably seen 20 or more about Gaza. Save The Children, for example, has posted seventeen times about Gaza in the past month and only once about Sudan.

Why? Why is Sudan being ignored while such a glaring light is being shone on Gaza? Is it because there are no Jewish people to blame for the Sudanese conflict? Or because the people suffering are black?

Sudan.un.org is the UN website showing what they are doing in Sudan.
I believe that aid is being allowed to enter Sudan.

Can we say the same for Gaza?

You are right, if Israel blocked aid into Sudan, I would be very angry with them for that. As indeed I would be if anyone did that. A quick look of charity websites suggests that they are allowed in though.

Blocking aid getting to starving people and shooting people in queues is a dick move, irrespective of your nationality or religion. Being Jewish is not a free pass to genocide with moral and legal immunity.

Whatabout

Whatabout

Whataboutery.

Do you care about Sudan or are you just trying to shut people up talking about Israel?

You and I both know the answer to that question

Who said "being Jewish is a free pass to genocide with moral and legal integrity"? Why are you equating the far right Netanyahu government with "being Jewish"? Do you think that's helpful or something?

TheHateIsNotGood · 26/07/2025 20:54

Maybe take your angst and fugue towards some actually anti-semetic people and not just individual independent thinkers (who aren't remotely anti-semetic) but only express some thoughts you don't agree with. @ForWittyTealOP.

Meanwhile in Sudan......

Meanwhile you've proved beyond reasonable doubt that you're a racist. And I just cannot debate with racists, it's a fool's errand. So enjoy your evening.

Ok. I do genuinely accept that was wrong of me. I don't equate the far right Israeli government with Judaism specifically or with individual people who are Jewish. But the implication of the whole origin of this thread is that Gaza gets more attention because of anti-Semitism. I think it's the horror of the situation that causes the strength of feeling. I don't think that anti-Semitism is the source of the criticism. In most people, some will be anti-semitic but most people just hate what is going on

Jujujudo · 26/07/2025 20:38

Even Jewish and Israeli ones??

Was the word always not clear enough for you? Of fucking course it’s indefensible to kill Jewish and Israeli children. What the fuck is wrong with you?

TheHateIsNotGood · 26/07/2025 21:15

Yep you got me there - a racist, anti-semetic just awful person I am and you were the only person in my 6 decades of life that finally found me out you clever, clever person @ForWittyTealOP .

Tbh anyone that believes what a bloody book says as the ultimate truth is a bit lacking in thought, be it the Bible, Koran or Torah. But after a few centuries of ritual it becomes a 'truth' when really it's just another way of keeping people in check by a minority of people in power.

Now comments like that would have got me hung in the UK a few hundred years ago, publicly stoned today in an Islamic country and not sure what the current Torah believers would have except calling me a racist via MN.

Would be happy to hear from any Hindus and Buddhists about what my punishments would be.

Meanwhile in Sudan.....

https://www.mediasupport.org/blogpost/silence-kills-the-state-of-media-in-war-torn-sudan/

This article is very interesting as it explains why news is not coming out of Sudan, to summarize there are few journalists left in Sudan and most are working in secret.
Only 12m out of 45 m people in Sudan use the Internet and there is censorship with social media. Again this means there is not wide spread news and social media images.

Now I will say I would not have been totally unaware of the conflict. Back in 2021 Trocaire (Irish charity) ran their Lenten fundraising appeal based on South Sudan which would have included an education pack that as a teacher I would have used with my class.

Silence kills: The state of media in war-torn Sudan | IMS

Over 60,000 people killed and 11 million displaced, and a media that is forcibly silenced, but the Sudan conflict remains a forgotten one.

I think it's a combination of factors but I've heard enough casual anti semitism to realise that's a big part of it. I also think it's an immensely complex situations that the world and its wife feels free to pontificate about as though it was just a case of one side being wholly right and the other being wholly wrong. Way easier to understand viewed in those terms than the intricacies of the war in Sudan.

Bridgetjonesheart · 26/07/2025 21:31

There’s a world agenda that lay people simply don’t get to know about. We see what they want us to see. It will be to do with money and land of course.

GeneralPeter · 26/07/2025 22:01

I think it’s lots of the factors mentioned. Another is that humans like a simple story. In our time the anti-colonial/anti-whiteness narrative in the mainstream and leftwards made Israel/Gaza look very simple for a lot of people, in a way that Sudan doesn’t. Ukraine was another simple narrative and gained traction fast. I think Ukraine has faded partly becuase it is non-partisan (in UK terms) so there is no in-group identity to burnish by being vocally pro-Ukraine. Plus the religious aspect to Gaza gives many Brits a natural ‘side’ in a way that many other conflicts lack.

If you research who is who in senior positions in broadcasting you will see. It’s not hate or conspiracy

Please help me out by naming some of these people in senior positions in broadcasting? I’d do it myself but I’m too busy counting money and drinking the blood of Christian children this evening.

This is fucking unbelievable. It’s genuinely like Julius Streicher has risen from his grave.

No I’m really not ok. We’re talking about the mass murder of children from gas chambers to food aid queues so I’m really not going to chill out about it. And if you can condone, defend, excuse, trivialise or be ambivalent about any child’s death whether they are Jewish, Palestinian, Sundanese or other then I really don’t know how you sleep at night. You also don’t have a monopoly on anger so fuck right off

Gas chambers? Who mentioned gas chambers? Are you Jewish, Palestinian or Sudanese? Do you know anyone personally who was killed in Israel or Gaza? A hostage maybe? Do you use your own body to shield your child from missile attacks or do you live close to a public shelter? Do you personally know any child who died in Israel, Gaza or Sudan?
You fk right off. Until you’ve walked a day in my shoes you don’t get to dictate to me about anger, or put words in my mouth or pretend to think you have any idea what I think or feel about anything.

I didn’t say run the media no. But there are many Jewish people in senior positions within media. Two different statements altogether.

I would put a 🤦‍♀️ but I think that would be a grave emoji understatement.

Is there an emoji for “fucking hell, that is a profoundly unpleasant and foolish post”?
