To find every bra uncomfortable?

I hate bras. I have one I like which I wear all the time, it’s baggy and unattractive. Basically a saggy crop top.

I ordered the same make, same size and now have some new bras. They appear to fit perfectly, not too tight on the band, cups fit well. At first I thought - ‘brilliant, these fit perfectly!’

Yet within a few hours I’m desperate to take it off! They give me weird headaches, almost like a pressure in my sinuses.

Don’t even get me started on the time I had a professional fitting and bought very expensive bras - they were agony!

Is it me or are all bras out to make my life miserable?!

You are my people! I cannot wear a bra because:

  • back fastening I can feel on my spine and it starts to hurt
  • Front fastening itches
  • I have never found a bra that doesn't make my nipples itch.

I (also small of the boob) do similar in that I either don't wear one (at home), wear a light support sports bra (but very picky about straps - can't have adjustable ones as the plastic bits dig in) and inbuilt support vest tops (but have to be not spaghetti straps, because those are usually adjustable). My favourite are an inbuilt bra top from Hush that they have been doing for about a year. But doesn't wort with every outfit.

Last year I had severe, acute costochondritis. An "attack" would start with it feeling like my bra/top had become really tight around the band. It was horrible and I had about two that I was willing to wear for ages.

I would love to have pretty underwear but I don't know how people can manage with it.

I've always hated bras. Small breasts, wide back, wires dig in and I hate a tight band around my chest.
I tried getting measured and they wanted me to try a bra several sizes smaller with bigger cups. The band cut me in half and the cups were empty.
Then I had a lumpectomy for breast cancer which made it all worse.
Sloggi zero feel are the only bras that are comfortable and give enough support (which is still necessary even with tiny breasts). So I have a drawer full of the ugly things. I also have drawers full of other bras I've bought.

Occasionally if I wear a summer dress I need something that looks a bit nicer. I found a set at Primark for £7. The pants are dreadful and went in the bin but the bra is pretty good. A slightly unusual shape but I bought large and it fits well.(I'm a size 12/14 and get a medium in sloggi.

Sloggi is one of my go to brands too!

@neverbeenskiing thanks very much 🌞

You’re almost certainly wearing the wrong size/style. Go to www.booborbust.com and measure yourself properly, and read the advice on which style suits your body shape.

I’ve been professionally measured and fitted a dozen times over the years. I still can’t tolerate wearing a bra for very long. I never have.

I do wonder if the issue is that bra fittings etc are aimed at the bigger of bust. When I have been fitted, I have been squashed into a tiny band and a large cup - neither needed. I was made so uncomfortable (by the bras, not the process) that I have never even brought a bra after a fitting.

I don't think the industry (a) thinks about the flat-chested; or (b) considers that anyone might want a bra to feel comfortable rather than to hoik boobs up and in. Mine are fine where they are thanks.

Needlenardlenoo · 24/07/2025 10:02

I am small of nork and don't much like bras.

I wear only Sloggi Zero Feels now. They have inserts but you can simply bin them.

JamPotJenny · 24/07/2025 10:15

I’ll try the Sloggi bra since teaching teenage boys can be perilous if norms aren’t controlled.

I always take out the inserts too.

JamPotJenny · 24/07/2025 10:16

*norks 🙄

CherryogDog · 24/07/2025 10:22

I had a DIEP reconstruction using belly fat. Unfortunately I've put on weight, and my belly fat boobs have expanded far too much.
Boob or bust puts me at 32G, the cups are fine but even with a band expander it's agony.
I'm not mobile enough to fasten my bra from behind so I do it up at the front and wrench it round which really hurts my skin.
I'm not dextrous enough to do up a front fastener.
So I've been wearing crop tops. Which if they fit my boobs the bands too loose. Or the band fits and my boobs hang out the side.
If I ever win the lottery I'm going to have a reduction.

Seeline · 24/07/2025 10:27

@CherryogDog thin silk scarf under the band makes twisting the bra round much easier. Remove it once in place obviously 😁

I can't stand wearing bras, doesn't matter if fitted or not. I haven't worn a bra in years, a small b cup. Never had an issue with nipples showing.

I never used to but post 50 yrs and they’ve somewhat taken on their own character 🥴

Shinyandnew1 · 24/07/2025 11:10

I find bras incredibly uncomfortable as I go through my 40s! I have some
Bravissimo ones which were fitted at the store and look great under clothes but I can barely breathe in-I will wear them if I have to (certain outfits/occasions) but hate it.

I have bralettes which are ok but give a pretty rubbish shape to bigger boobs.

I have a Molke which is 'ok'. Better in winter but they are big and bright and if you wear strappy tops in summer it just shows underneath which I don't like.

What I want is a non-wired bra, that has built in padding (so that bit doesn't get all misshapen or move around), isn't massive like a lot of bralettes are and that does some sort of divide and lift!

SpinningTops · 24/07/2025 09:28

So here’s today’s bra. I’ll want it off by midday. But objectively, not tight on the band or cups, no wires, very soft material.

Any advice on fit welcome.

That's one of the nicer sloggi bras. I have several similar.
If that's you OP you are a bit bigger busted than me but it looks a good fit. I think if that feels uncomfortable you are really going to struggle to get anything better. There are no wires, no fasteners as they pull on, nothing to dig in but firm enough for support.
I had breast pain before my lumpectomy but much more since, I also recently found out I get costochondritis which basically feels like bruised ribs. My breast surgeon said no matter how small they are you should wear a bra.

@Shinyandnew1 I mentioned up thread about this one. It's moulded so no loose pads and gives me the nearest thing to cleavage, I think because it's an unusual shape. I only wear it if I'm wearing a strappy top.

Oh, thank you-where was one from? Are you able to link??

Needlenardlenoo · 24/07/2025 11:57

I'm a teacher too @JamPotJenny and Sloggi hasn't let me down! "Norms" was not inappropriate in the context either!

I have dodgy shoulders and can twist the Sloggi ones quite easily.

I gave all the inserts to DT at school so expect to see them in a student project soon 😂

Cantonet · 24/07/2025 12:05

I used to wear sloggi zero feel with the moulded Inserts but now wear Boody as they're more breathable. I wear the bralettes without fastenings that you pull on. But I'm tempted to buy the t shirt bra as the Inserts are sewn in. I used to go out braless when young & pre-kids but now at 61 but post weight loss & post breast feeding just no.

Needlenardlenoo · 24/07/2025 12:20

Ooh I will investigate Boody as it's true Sloggi aren't very breathable which is an issue in hot weather.

Sortin · 24/07/2025 13:18

@Cantonet ooh will investigate Boody as that sounds like it would work.

@Shinyandnew1 believe it or not it's Primark. Part of a two piece set so not on the usual bra shelves. I'm 67 so definitely didn't want the tiny pants that came with it! I've bought a few but only really for occasional summer wear.

nomas · 24/07/2025 13:39

YANBU, I have ADHD related sensory issues so have tried lots of different types of bras.

This summer I’ve started wearing non-see through v neck t-shirts and going bra less in the heat. I’m a 38D so I do need support with most outfits.

I appreciate that’s not an option for everyone.

Needlenardlenoo · 24/07/2025 13:48

A lot of my female students wear those spaghetti strap tops with bra included. Practical for smaller busts I think.

Me too Nomas.
I've always cut the tags off of tops & bras.I can't wear wool or anything itchy. Unfortunately my school uniform was horribly rough Crimplene dresses that I had to have lined in cotton. Coupled with lacy itchy starter bras my teenage years were spent in major discomfort !
I didn't realise it was a sign of adhd until ds2 was diagnosed. He used to cut a perfect rectangle out of his white school shirts, not just the tag. I think the labels were sown in.

MyDogHumpsThings · 24/07/2025 14:39

I also hate bras and I think I've finally found an acceptable one! It's a brand called HoneyLove (no association with LoveHoney, as far as I know) and I saw Ruth Crilly (model, influencer) talking about them on Instagram. I almost didn't buy one because the marking was so InstaScam coded (shitty voiceovers, spammy), but I did and I'm so glad I took the plunge (pun intended).

It's so comfortable, not underwired, and actually a very impressive level of lift that lasts all day and doesn't move. No sagging. I'm a 36E. I do get a bit of uniboob, but better than many others I've tried. The straps don't dig in at all.
