To find every bra uncomfortable?

I hate bras. I have one I like which I wear all the time, it’s baggy and unattractive. Basically a saggy crop top.

I ordered the same make, same size and now have some new bras. They appear to fit perfectly, not too tight on the band, cups fit well. At first I thought - ‘brilliant, these fit perfectly!’

Yet within a few hours I’m desperate to take it off! They give me weird headaches, almost like a pressure in my sinuses.

Don’t even get me started on the time I had a professional fitting and bought very expensive bras - they were agony!

Is it me or are all bras out to make my life miserable?!

It's certainly not just you given that desperation to fling a bra off is such a trope that it was part of a whole advert this year. MacMillan or something? And it's on TikTok reals and posts on here etc.

Not something I've ever experienced. I can't feel my bra any more than I can feel any of my clothes. Or my contact lenses etc.

So I don't know what the answer is but it's a widespread and commonly discussed issue so hopefully someone else can offer something more useful.

Tinkerbell7777 · 23/07/2025 09:17

I have scoliosis and wearing a bra is very uncomfortable. Could you have a slight curve that you don’t know about?

Nannyfannybanny · 23/07/2025 09:21

I have a hiatus hernia bang where the bra is. I didn't realise, I used to say that my bra gave me acid reflux, people thought I was barmy. Tried non wire, soft pull on. Then a CT revealed the problem. Pull on ones are worse, because if I get heartburn or reflux I need to get it undone quickly. Indoors,I don't bother with one.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/07/2025 09:22

You’re almost certainly wearing the wrong size/style. Go to www.booborbust.com and measure yourself properly, and read the advice on which style suits your body shape.

Shangrilalala · 23/07/2025 09:26

I saw an Instagram advert only today for a product called body and bra which makes amazing claims about bra comfort and support. I’m always wary about online reviews too but wondered if anyone here had tried it?

Bryonyberries · 23/07/2025 09:30

I’ve never got on with bras and tend to use crop tops - which obviously don’t give you the same look as a proper bra - but I just can’t find ones that fit comfortably.

Zanzara · 23/07/2025 09:33

As we get older our skins can get thinner and drier, meaning bras are more likely to irritate sensitive skin. I hate bras nowadays, but for many of us leaving them off is not an option. 😡

Tiredofwhataboutery · 23/07/2025 09:38

I’m not a bra fan either. I had to take off the last properly fitted bra I got after an hour. I tend to wear light support sports bras. Which keep them firmly in place but do nothing for my figure. They fasten in the back.

SaywhatIthink · 23/07/2025 09:49

I hate bras and dont put one on unless i really have to.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 23/07/2025 09:53

I get mine from Tu ( Sainsburys). They are all cotton. I am still glad to get them off at the end of the day but they are super comfortable . They are really cheap too.

PassingStranger · 23/07/2025 09:54

You've tried a bralette I take it.

LesFreresHeureux · 23/07/2025 09:58

I’ve tried a couple of racer back bras recently and discovered they give me migraines. I just can’t handle the pressure close to my neck vs close to my shoulder.

I’ve started to wear bralettes as they’re much more comfortable than normal bras. I also have a couple of M&S sleep bras which provide little support but feel amazing.

Seeline · 23/07/2025 10:01

If it's the correct size (which is a major issue - different brands often size differently, and even the style of bra within the same brand will fit differently), bras really shouldn't be uncomfortable.

Check your measurements with an online calculator - like boob or bust mentioned earlier. Use that as a guide. Don't be tricked into using the old fashioned technique of adding 4" to your under bust measurement to get the band size - that was used before bras were made of elasticated fabrics. A band that is too big won't give you the support that is needed.

Most women are wearing bras that have too big a band and too small cups. This causes the discomfort.

Yep, I got sucked in by the advertising. Should have known better, but I was desperate.

The sizing didn't work at all for me, it was big enough in the cup but that meant the band was so big my boobs fell out of the bottom.

I would say though that if you are maybe an E cup or less I think they would be really comfortable. The fabric was lovely and it gave a really nice shape.

I remember going to M&S years ago for a bra fitting wearing a 32E which felt fine but I wanted to be sure. They measured me and decided I needed a 36C! It was ridiculous, the band was huge the cups were small and they were insistent it was the right fit. I went back to my 32E.

It’s not surprising women are wearing the wrong size.

JamPotJenny · 23/07/2025 10:21

Hate bras too.
often go without and wear those silicon nipple petals but I’m a small B cup so I get away with it.

I buy the soft multipack bra tops from Tesco otherwise. It’s all I can cope with!

Stompythedinosaur · 23/07/2025 10:33

Try Molke! They are a game changer! Nothing like traditional bras, far more comfortable!

Aria2015 · 23/07/2025 10:34

I went to get a new bra the other day. I tried on one that is like a cropped top (goes over your head) by Sloggi and it was the most comfortable thing ever! It doesn't look very glam, but it’s supportive and so soft. I forget I'm even wearing a bra! I think I'm going to get one in every colour now! Definitely recommend.

Menonut · 23/07/2025 10:43

I’ve always hated bras. I have cartilage on my ribs which means that my rib cage is slightly larger than normal. (a doctor did explain it to me once after my stepmum dragged me for loads of tests as a teenager due to abnormal lumps- my mum died of breast cancer so there was obvious concern)

I tried getting professional fittings etc I tried measuring myself using the boob and bust method - they were all uncomfortable.

i was eventually recommended a local independent retailer who don’t measure, but fit you by sight. They try you in a couple then take a look then keep trying until you get the right fit. It was life changing!

When I got the bras home I did still struggle for a bit, but once they were washed a couple of times and I got used to wearing bras again they were fine and I now don’t notice when I’m wearing them.

i would see if you could find a local independent retailer, there are loads listed on the boob and bust website. It is their livelihood rather than just being an employee in a high street chain so it is in their interest to help you and get you coming back as a repeat customer.

Last time I tried a "correct size" bra it was so painful I was near to tears after only an hour. Took it back to Bravissimo (they'd measured me and everything) the next day. I'd rather wear one that's too big than feel like the bra is trying to cut me in half.

Solidarity, OP, bras are awful. I can't bear wired ones, and finding a nonwired bra that doesn't have massive hideous straps is a challenge. I'd try molke, but the straps are so ugly 😩

TimSamandLulu · 23/07/2025 11:10

M&S flexifit bralettes. Amazing and all I wear now. I used to do all that tight band, underwires, big cups thing - pah, couldn’t give a monkeys about that now. Bralettes all the way.

Sloggi is my favourite shapeless baggy bra that I have on the go.

It’s the brand I’ve just ordered 4 new ones off that are now making me feel all uncomfortable. I think maybe they just need a few wears and washes from what people have said on here.

I like the sound of nipple petals. I don’t have massive boobs. Don’t need much support but don’t want to show nipples through clothing!
