What happened to the laughing face emoji response?

I am sorry if there was a thread on this already that I've not found.

The laughing face emoji private response was so good. I could use it to laugh at something funny or at something totally idiotic. Multi purpose.

Where oh where and why has it gone?

AIBU to want it back?

WickWood · 22/07/2025 10:21

I think because of your latter point, people weren't happy that others were using it on their unfunny posts (to them) 🤣

Flyswats · 22/07/2025 10:22

@WickWood I did wonder that...

The snowflakes got it cancelled!

Painrelief · 22/07/2025 10:23

I suspect it could be seen as a bullying tactic . You see it on fb posts people goading others with the funny emoji

Katiesaidthat · 22/07/2025 10:25

Yes, I want it back too. I also suspect that some flake got a laugh on their not funny post and their diddum feeeeelingz were hurt. Mumsnet, bring the laughing emoji back!

MeringueOutang · 22/07/2025 10:26

It was used to laugh at someone who was actively suicidal so MN pulled it.

😂
Now I have to go to the trouble of quoting to add my laugh emoji. Hmmm

Over reaction of the century. You block said person from site and that´s that.

Youdontseehow · 22/07/2025 10:28

Maybe just me but I cba with the reactions - you get a notification then need to click on it to take the notification away and it’s just someone agreeing with your post.

It’s not so much the reaction- it’s the notification that your post got a reaction, IYSWIM?

Disable notifications. I did ages ago.

Ooo I did not know this - will do so immediately!

Not true. It was a vocal contingent of not-suicidal people who couldn't cope with feeling laughed at.

Exactly, and this is why we can't have nice things, there are some real pricks out there.

I made a post about the serious homophobia my best friend went though on 90s, a few respoded with the laugh emoji - it's was obviously being misused; people were using the laugh emoji to harass others bc they knew their hate posts would get taken down.

The word snowflake is racist where i come from.

OriginalUsername2 · 22/07/2025 10:36

I miss it every time I come on here. That was a fun time, it really lifted the mood up while it was about! People put effort into being witty instead of snarky for a change.

I think it added a bit more humour back into posts and responses too. MN was a witty place to be many years back until the trigger warnings were needed about being "lighthearted" trend.

I don't know how you can balance expressing humour but not hand bullies a tool.

I wonder if it's viable for a "disable reactions" option when creating a thread?

I wish there was a care reaction. Sometimes people post heart breaking things that I don't have appropriate words to post back with, but a reaction might help them feel less alone with their difficulties. Love isn't quite right.

Oh I give heart emojis for care, I’m pretty sure it comes across the right way as I’ve received them too.

You didn't try very hard then.

Or could have been that the bullies were using it to make themselves feel better.

nomas · 22/07/2025 12:25

I’m glad it’s gone. Every time I called out a racist poster for their racism, they would laugh react.

Until the fucker got banned.

How was it a fun time though? No one else could see what you laugh reacted to.

manicpixieschemegirl · 22/07/2025 12:38

I miss it!

Bring it back and make reactions visible to everyone. There’ll be much less chance of it being misused and any posters who do should be dealt with individually.

InMyOpenOnion · 22/07/2025 12:40

I am still in two minds about it, not sure what the answer is. It's definitely a shame we can't share a laugh at something funny, but I suppose I don't miss that very much. There had been some pretty awful misuse I think, plus as a PP said, it became the standard "retaliation" from people being eloquently called out on their awful comments.

That's so helpful. How about a link?
