Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with possible visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail.

We have done amazingly well together - in the main that is, not mentioning any names but you know who you are! - for seven threads so far. I can't be on the threads as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion ticking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

No saltiness. Keep to the path. Thank you.

It is telling that the BBC have picked this up and run with it in the last couple of days. It does feel like they are trying to get ahead of the (next part) of the story

The report of the same BBC News at 6 interview with the Hemmings has also consistently been the first and second most read item on the BBC News website today.

ETA Currently at no 9.

This is not niche MN speculation, this is Mainstream!

That might screw up Penguins hopes of everyone forgetting about this and sneaking that difficult third book out.

PandoraSocks · 18/07/2025 18:46

I almost feel sorry for them. But not really!

All very well attacking hysterical outrage on social media outlets but when your alleged embezzlement appears on the main 6pm BBC1 news, that is a bit of a game changer.

Managed mea culpa in the works after this Sunday's Observer article?

Yes, Penguin and Walker will not really know what to do now. Although Penguin really ought to cut their losses and run.

I imagine both were hoping it would die down and disappear.

But this is taking it far beyond their worst nightmares.

I wonder if HumanKindness is now writing a complaint to the BBC.

Applepie32 · 18/07/2025 18:47

Back to petty theft. In response to @humankindness who said that when your world has fallen apart you are less likely to do the right thing. I wholly disagree. In good times and bad you carry your integrity and principles with you or you don't. As I recall RW did not steal the fudge out of desperation- she couldn't face waiting in a long queue. At no point did they express remorse for this or the campsite theft. In fact as I recall RW was disparaging towards the campsite attendant referring to him as a ' box ticker' when he was loyally trying to prevent his employer from a financial loss. Petty theft has ' devastating impacts' on small seasonal businesses. So could I follow 8 threads for a discussion on petty theft alone? The answer is yes. Because if petty theft is part of your MO then what else is also?

It's all of her own making, I know, but who would want this?

She really should have started to dial down Tim's illness after TSP not ramp it up to miracle levels, because the original tip off was about that.

The rest probably wouldn't have got out otherwise.

I now wonder if fudge theft and campground theft even happened. It seems more like a fabrication to remind the reader of their desperation as homeless people (who still chose to get a bus rather than camp in shop doorways)

Yes. Initially I thought the BBC was dragging its heels reluctantly about reporting it. I questioned impartiality as the TSP film was partially funded by the BBC.

Could be getting ahead of the wave to limit any fallout.

WindowSilver · 18/07/2025 18:54

I'm off to watch the news on catch up.

The thing that puzzles me most in the response / rebuttal from Sally, is why did she not provide a consultant's letter dated 2013 with the diagnosis, and the 2 follow-up letters about the 2 brain scans described in the 2nd book. Those letters would end the accusations of lying about his condition. Nothing else she can provide will end the accusations, since the 2013 diagnosis and the clear brain scan following the second walk were very clearly described as facts in the books.

She has never denied stealing the money from her employer, so the "mistakes were made" confession combined with all the reporting and testimony from many people means we can be very confident she did in fact steal the money.

Stealing money from a trusting employer was disgusting, but I think it's the combination of that and the unsubstantiated health claims that make this story so fascinating and are making people determined to get to the truth.

I'm not gleeful.
I just meant that people who embezzled money and don't apologise or own there mistake are not going feel that people like Ros Hemmings have any right to tell their side of things and are just being mean. I would be amazed if R&T don't see themselves as being victims of media nastiness rather than facts.

For the record I do not think them to be evil personified and wish no ill will on them.
