Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with possible visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail.

We have done amazingly well together - in the main that is, not mentioning any names but you know who you are! - for seven threads so far. I can't be on the threads as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion ticking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

No saltiness. Keep to the path. Thank you.

Simon Armitage got his account of his 2013 walk from Minehead to Land's End published in 2015. SW started writing TSP in Autumn 2016. Just saying....

ThatFluentHedgehog · 18/07/2025 10:18

So, before the big tiresome distraction yesterday, we were talking about what we'd like next The Observer investigative report to cover. These came up:

  • What really caused the Walkers to move to Wales very suddenly – other than a child running up the road?
  • Anything legally questionable in their pre-50s lives?
  • Did SW have a job at a hotel in Abersoch, and if so how did that end?

For me this is of interest in order to establish whether criminal behavior is a pattern for them. If so it would give those claiming the £64k embezzlement isn't proved something to mull over. (Personally I would like to see everyone they owe money to repaid/damage to their lives recompensated. They may well have had other aliases, with people they aggrieved in the past still unaware of the connection with RW and TSP).

We also have:
-PSPA charity issuing distancing statement on 7th July
-PRH postponing October publication date for fourth TSP series book
-Gigspanner Big Band taking SW off their set list
-South West Coast Path Association considering dropping Raynor Winn as ambassador
-now deleted LinkedIn post from nephew describing SW/TW as pathological liars who've left a trail of destruction
-lack of any public support from any family members or friends of SW/TW

As well as negative testimony from people who would normally be go-tos for employment/character/financial good standing references:
-Former employer (family business): Ros Hemmings and her daughter
-Landlord at the cider farm: Bill Cole
-Mayor of French village

On the theft

paying back the stolen money meant they lost their house. If you were innocent why on earth wouldn’t you trust the investigation to clear you

unfortunately forged cheques paid to yourself are hard to explain

Winn says that she didn’t have the evidence to prove what actually happened. Selective presentation going on here….,

on your second point, that’s a non-evidenced based statement

Crikeyalmighty · 18/07/2025 10:20

@candycane222 its all a bit Jane Austen for me ( and I don’t like Jane Austen books) !! I’m not a huge fan of over flowery writing - but yep I realise many women love it

Bruisername · 18/07/2025 10:20

It’s pretty obvious why he took the money and agreed not to pursue if you have any experience of fraud

he needed the money back and if they had pursued criminal charges he wouldn’t have had any back and, if he had, it would have been years down the line

its not just the stolen money but the opportunity cost of that money which really impacts a business

I can’t believe anyone would believe Sw repaid the money and lost her house because of it but was totally innocent - why would she do that?

Mostly conjecture.

would you get up on a stage and perform knowing that you might be abused by the audience? Honestly!!!

And yet she is so vague about "what happened". And I find it a tremendous stretch to think anyone would pay £90k if they were innocent

if she were innocent she wouldn’t need to present evidence - it is up to the prosecution to present evidence of guilt. If she was not guilty why would she be so afraid?

Cornishwafer · 18/07/2025 10:26

Surprised RW talks so blatantly about stealing confectionery in her book. If she truly had been either accused (even wrongly) of theft wouldn't she be ultra cautious, paranoid even, to ensure it never happened again.
A previous poster stated that desperate people employed desperate measures but she stole fudge bars....I love those but they are hardly the most neutrious thing to spend money on.

Currently unavailable - I wonder since it has an ISBN number whether your local librray can order a copy from the British Library.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Gangani Publishing Ltd
Publication date ‏ : ‎ 1 May 2012
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Print length ‏ : ‎ 254 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0957303106
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0957303102
Item weight ‏ : ‎ 299 g

It’s currently showing as unavailable, but since it has a valid ISBN, your local library may be able to request it via interlibrary loan—possibly even from the British Library, depending on their policies.

It’s worth checking with your library—they’ll usually let you know if it’s available to order in through their network.

This approach would effectively prevent any individual sharing their experience in case someone misinterpreted it. I don’t buy this argument.

The problem is that they don't really seem to have shared their experience. It seems much more likely that the scans referenced in the third book reveal a misdiagnosis, given the nature of CBD. That doesn't mean that he isn't ill - some people have to live with serious conditions that are never diagnosed.

Perhaps they wrote what they wanted to believe - but this is the point when Penguin should have stepped in.

They also didn't correct interviewers who referred to walking as a cure.

Having close experience of a similarly devastating illness, it seems callous to say 'well people shouldn't think this story is relevant to them'. Of course desperate people grasp at anything that looks like hope.

Having said all of this, you don't have to buy my argument and you can obviously continue to buy any product produced by the Walker Winns. Other people can make different choices and can also express their views.

Rallentanda · 18/07/2025 10:35

Laughing at the turn this thread has taken. Much distraction as we are asked to prove what is already out there in the form of Observer-lawyer-approved articles, Sally Walker's own words, and hospital letters...

Really pointless and targeted!

Does the Observer often do this type of event?

VerySwettyBetty · 18/07/2025 10:42

@sualipa there’s discussion somewhere a gazillion posts ago that it was self-published and something about thus not needing to be logged with the British Library. Looks like it will be very hard to find

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 18/07/2025 10:42

@Humankindness a couple of questions for you,

Are you saying that the Hemmings family are lying about the stolen money? If so then for what reason?

You said yesterday that Bill Cole (landlord) wanted "a slice of their life". What did you mean by that?

I'm not trying to trip you up here btw, just genuinely curious.

FurryHappyKittens · 18/07/2025 10:43

One reason that was mentioned about why Martin H didn't press charges was that Walker had children and he didn't want to see them suffer. That's in one of the interviews with his wife/ daughter/ sister.

If you haven't stolen money, there's nothing to prove. If I was accused of this and hadn't done it, I would say, prove it. What I wouldn't do is take out a loan to pay back a massive sum of money someone has told me I owed them.

If a person wants to go along with what Sally Walker has said and believes her when she says she couldn't prove what happened so gave someone a lot of money instead, then I do rather question their mental prowess.

BBC article. Day 13 and the story isn't going away yet. This time, the Beeb has waded in and done an interview with the Hemmings. Nothing new in essence but I think if it's got this much reach, for this length of time, PRH must surely be wondering if they'll ever be able to publish the fourth book.

In the beginning they probably hoped it would die down. Then came Sally Walker's strange rebuttal. It was after that that they delayed publication. Still, time for the story to fade. However, it seems that, ironically, just like TSP, there's something about it that has touched the nation, and it's run and run.

Now even the BBC want their slice.

And with more in the Observer coming up, and various articles and opinion pieces, it seems it's not going away anytime soon.

Is there anything at all to be salvaged? I think that even if they tried to publish next year that the whole thing is so big it would just reignite interest in her wrongdoing and lying.

Tortoise ran two editions of the Kite Festival, both of which I attended and they were absolutely excellent. It had a great mix of music, comedy, arts, and literature, all wrapped up in a proper camping festival experience. Unfortunately, since they discontinued it as a standalone event likely due to losing a significant amount of money it seems they’ve scaled things back quite a bit. A real shame, as it had so much potential. They like to do the news behind the news stories it would seem.

Another crime to add to their list if they didn't do it - they have an ISBN number after all!

Yes, you are legally required to give a copy of your book to the British Library if you're publishing in the UK.
This is part of the UK’s legal deposit system, which ensures the nation's published heritage is preserved.
