One million immigrants claiming benefits

1000 replies

AnxiousApocalypse · 16/07/2025 01:15

Just been reading the comments sections of the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail articles about the one million foreigners claiming benefits in the UK. It feels like the final nail in the coffin and a lot of people will feel even more justified in expressing their anger and hate towards immigrants. What happens when Reform win the next general election and come into power? Will people be rounded up en masse and put in detention centres like the USA?

@TheHateIsNotGood it make me a bit sad that people don’t understand our history - which has been shaped by invasion and immigration since the dawn of time

reminds me of the Blackadder scene ‘I’m as English as Queen Victoria’ … ‘so your dad’s German, your mum’s German and you’re half German’

It’s a non tangible thing that can be quantified, the feeling of it.

Its a feeling that when you enter the area or in this case, the shop - that you are met with hostility and do not belong. Like you’ve walked in on someone and they weren’t expecting you and aren’t happy you’re there.

I have had the opposite experience of you coming from a ghetto area (yes I’ll call it a ghetto based on the crime, poverty and tribal fights that happened between different groups of all races and cultures). I then moved and have experienced very well done integration where other cultures are cohesively managed. It’s a delicate thing that cannot be done by swamping areas with just one demographic and expecting the current culture (in this case British) to prevail.

I don’t see how it’s bad faith to say this? I’m a Celt myself so have a culture I’d like to preserve, I won’t be shamed for it 🤷‍♀️

Genuinely interested in what type of Spanish Celt you are and what aspects of your Celtic culture you uphold and preserve.

TreatTreat · 16/07/2025 16:03

We're not allowed to talk about things like this though or we get called racist.

I know several immigrants who refuse to work. They love taking the tax payers hard-earned money though.

TheHateIsNotGood · 16/07/2025 16:06

@ghostyslovesheets and @randomchap -yes! But then I'm a Jacobite and my Mum or Grandma were Italian.💑

Edited

A lot of Celtic traditions have been co opted by English culture so are similar but not the same. Mainly Christian festivals which took over the pagan festivals (seeing an uptick in that though).

I think for me the biggest thing is food, Welsh cakes on the griddle is something we all adore. It’s also (again not tangible) but a ‘way of the person’. Like northerners and southerners in England there’s a difference in personality that isn’t tangible but you know it’s there - mannerisms, way of speaking etc.

Well, as you say, pubs do still exist…
Hang on to your hat, but my neighbours and I, of all skin colours/religions/cultures/appearances, say good morning to each other all the time.
London is absolutely hoaching with churches.
In every shop I've ever been into in the UK, including those in places like Whitechapel that are clearly set up for people who like to/primarily use another language, the staff nonetheless understand me and speak to me in English. It's me who's the monoglot.
I really really can't see what the presence of people from different cultures has to do with abandoned community centres. You need to take that up with your local council.
I've never been to Benidorm, so can't say much about it. I don't know what you mean by 'at least that's a tourist spot', though; for one thing, a lot of people come to London/the UK partly or specifically because they want to see culturally and ethnically rich areas, so from that point of view you could argue that e.g. Brick Lane is a tourist spot.

Everything community related in areas im talking about such as Hounslow, Slough, Southall, all residential areas and not tourist spots either, are abandoned or to ruin which is the case for most places like this. The churches if they even exist are run down and overgrown, the pubs are mostly closed and just kept alive by the small amount of british people living in the area. Neighbours might say hi from time to time but take any walk down the high street not a chance. Lots of people haven't really experienced or lived in areas like this, most people i know who share this opinion that it isn't a problem, live in the most upper class white areas known to man yet preach that it is all positive (not saying you do).

Strongly agree. I’ve had many hostile responses for my experience I’ve outlined.

I went from a run down city to a Cotswold village and its night and day in terms of social cohesion and lack of awareness of failed social cohesion.

No, a solid democracy needs equilibrium. Maybe a couple of terms of liberal/left policies and then conservative/right depending on how things are. A mix of both.

Not just 30 years of out and out liberalism and lax policing/border control.

We're in a liberal democracy. That means we believe in the right to vote, civil rights and the rule of law.

The majority party has consistently been the Tories who aren't left leaning by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the state of the country could be blamed on them and not foreigners.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 16/07/2025 16:10

Regarding speaking English:
Previous governments cut funding for English speaking classes

regarding asylum seekers in hotels: Processing was slowed down on purpose to hold applicants in limbo.

re working: asylum seekers are not allowed to work

Re illegal immigrants: there’s in such thing. Asylum seekers have to be in the U.K. to be able to claim asylum.

Of course but any immigrant should want to give back to the country they are part of. Whole communities identities are being lost because of lots of new immigrants moving in to the area. If new immigrants moving in were respectful too and wanted to integrate I wouldn't mind, but it's not happening from what I can see.

The scale of the change the last 10-20 years has been unprecedented. BorisWave on its own has completely changed the make up of towns practically overnight, even if leafy towns and villages of middle England remain untouched. Therefore they don't see it.

The British people have shown remarkable tolerance at the level of demographic change we've seen in our lifetimes. Patience has snapped at the lack of border control, the sheer numbers and the lack of integration from recent immigration.

It was the Tories that opened the borders to unprecedented immigration numbers. There was nothing conservative about them.

TreatTreat · 16/07/2025 16:14

And I get told I'm being racist because I don't want to bankroll immigrants. The people who have left their womenfolk in dangerous places. They often come from places where disrespect to women is rife, where sexual assault and rape is rife. I don't want men who have been brought up in cultures thinking that is ok living in my community. No thank you.

And they do want to give back.

I know of asylum seekers volunteering in care homes, charity shops and homeless charities. Whilst they are held in limbo awaiting a decision. Some waiting 10 years. Speed up the process and let these people contribute like they want to.

ffsfindmeausername · 16/07/2025 16:17

I imagine the numbers of migrants coming here to the UK would massively reduce if they were not entitled to any benefits whatsoever until they'd been here and contributed for many years. Also they should not be granted social housing.
You cannot blame anyone one for wanting to come and live here, if your giving it away then they're obviously going to come and take it.

You don't believe that suppressing wages by importing cheap labour is Tory?

PandoraSocks · 16/07/2025 16:17

MightyDandelionEsq · 16/07/2025 15:52

Don’t then?

No one is actively forcing you. At some point we come across people with differing views, the fact you see it as a waste of time is a key part of the issue. It used to be ‘I don’t agree; let’s respectfully move on’. Take care.

It us not a matter of differing opinions. It is people claiming facts with no evidence.

But don't let that stop you. On you go.

pearcrumblee · 16/07/2025 16:17

The country is swamped in debt and there is more to come due to the deficit. Surely stopping benefits for migrants would prevent the numbers turning up.
I am not against benefits by the way, I am against raising our taxes to give to people from the rest of the world and I am also against our pensioners struggling whilst those who turn up on our shores are having everything handed to them immediately.
I am not against migration either, but at the current levels with no checks at all it is dangerous.

“Colonialism significantly shaped the Middle East through the imposition of new borders, political structures, and economic systems, often disrupting existing social and cultural landscapes. This led to lasting impacts on national identities, political stability, and economic development, with ongoing conflicts and tensions often traced back to colonial legacies.”

We taken their oil, natural gas, caused extreme historical disruption and poverty.

And now we like to dehumanise and paint them as criminal boat people when they attempt to escape what we created in their country.

What were we when we went over in our boats historically and destroyed their way of living? Heroes?

Thank you.
This this this
Why do British people completely ignore it?
Britain created poverty and I stability all over the world , not just the middle east, whilst getting rich pillaging other countries.
It's no surprise that the people now seek to come here from their now poor and asset stripped countries .

Sane here.
Both DH and I are immigrants. We moved to the UK using work visa via the point based system. It was absolutely clear no recourse to public funding.
That was more than a decade ago and now we have became uk citizens. I continue to pay over £50k of income tax and NI every year (I am high earner with professional job).
It really upset me when ppl say immigrants are taking advantage and claim benefits.

Many are though. You're very hardworking and it's immigrants like you who are welcome.
