I’m so tired of people with dangerous dogs ruining the park for everyone else.

Every time I take my children and our small cavapoo to the park, there’s always someone with an intimidating dog off the lead. Yesterday it was a man with a huge German Shepherd (and I mean huge), a bully breed on a lead, and an Akita off the lead just wandering around.

This is a busy, very suburban park, full of families and young children. And there I am, trying to scoop up my two toddlers, push the pram with the baby, grab the dog, and move away as fast as possible because I am not taking the risk of one of those dogs attacking. And let’s be honest, if something did happen, I’d have to sacrifice my dog to protect my children.

Even the two dogs that were technically on a lead, if they decided to go for another dog or child, there’s no way he could have held them back. They were enormous, powerful breeds.

And don’t get me started on the Akita. It was off-lead, trotting around freely as if that’s totally normal. Akitas were originally bred to guard property and hunt large game, including bears. They are strong, territorial, and known for being aggressive toward other dogs. They can be incredibly unpredictable and are not the type of breed you let wander freely in a public park full of children and pets.

Today it was a woman with a giant Rottweiler off-lead, paying absolutely no attention while she scrolled on her phone. Again, no control, no awareness. Rottweilers were originally bred to drive cattle and guard livestock, and they are incredibly strong, protective dogs. They have a natural guarding instinct, which can easily turn dangerous when not properly controlled. It’s no coincidence that they feature in so many fatal dog attacks, especially involving children. The number of child deaths caused by Rottweilers is horrifying and well-documented. It doesn’t matter how sweet you think your dog is at home but when a dog like that turns, it’s too late to stop it.

Far too many times my own dog, who is a total wimp and literally gets bullied by a chihuahua, has been attacked by dogs whose owners claim, “Oh, they never normally do that.” It’s always after the fact, once the damage is done.

And honestly, it’s the complete lack of awareness that really gets me. You might think your dog is friendly, but when you’re letting it freely wander up to children and other dogs, especially massive, powerful breeds, it’s terrifying. It might not scare you, but to everyone else, it’s incredibly intimidating.

I love dogs. I grew up with them. But this constant anxiety when I take my children out is exhausting. I shouldn’t have to be on high alert every time we go to the park because someone refuses to take basic responsibility for an animal that could cause serious harm.

So we are creating a robot miniature pig that plays chess, cooks bacon, is NOT a toaster, wears a muzzle, is always on a lead and doesn’t look at grandchildren whether or not on private land.

It sounds brilliant! my pup would love this as a friend, (provided it's fake bacon that it cooks). Where can I get one?

I can confirm that you can program it to cook fake bacon. Coming soon to an Argos near you. Just waiting on funding, patent pending.

It’d make Crufts pretty surreal wouldn’t it?

To be fair, Crufts is pretty surreal already...😬

Laugh all you want but in 25 years dogs will have disappeared from our streets, and will only be seen in zoos.

So will vegans.

@TheGreatDownandOutyou’ve just proved my point about entitlement. Dogs bite, children don’t

You've never worked in a pre-school or nursery, have you? 😂

@CoubousAndTourmalet i would say it needs to be on a lead at all times when out

Ummm, sorry, but what does? A robot pig?

hungryduck · 20/07/2025 21:56

This is exactly what AI was made for...

I'll have the one on the left please, it looks sufficiently darkly gothic and menacing to keep dangerously aggressive grandmothers away. When it's not cooking, it can live in the front porch and be a guard pig.

lollypop42 · 20/07/2025 22:12

@CoubousAndTourmalet no, your dog

My dog is always on a lead in public, for her own safety. Thank you for your concern for her wellbeing, but I won't allow her off lead anywhere there are likely to be dangerous grandmothers at large.

Sorry, no can do. You're not allowed to give it purpose. It must be kept for happiness only. The only killing machines with purpose are the deadly toasters.

Oh damn. That's a dealbreaker for me, sorry. I do need a new guard dog though, so I'll have to take the toaster. The current guard dog doesn't even bark 🙄 she's never awake long enough 😴

TheGreatDownandOut · 20/07/2025 22:22

So we put the toaster on the front porch to guard the house and keep the gothic robo-pig purely for the purpose of dangerous granny deterrent?

TheGreatDownandOut · 20/07/2025 22:24

Oh shit, I got that wrong. Gothic robo-pig can’t have a purpose, even if it’s to deter dangerous grannies. FML I am such an irresponsible gothic robo-pig owner 😭

That could work...provided we don't mind skipping breakfast or seeking alternative options for toast and bacon...🤔

hungryduck · 20/07/2025 22:29

It's ok @TheGreatDownandOutthe toaster can be duel purpose. Guard toaster/Granny deterrent. It'll trap walking sticks in the hole like a stiletto heel in a drain grate.

Not even a granny deterrent? That's a shameful waste of a Gothic robo-pig. The poor thing. How embarrassing for it being purely ornamental.
Tho it begs the question how it can do the bacon cooking and chess playing...

I mean this is a good point. If we want to be responsible gothic robo-pig owners we should allow it to fulfil the purpose for which it was created otherwise it’s not fulfilling its potential. I think cooking bacon and playing chess was purely to create happiness but there is a line between functional and emotional I suppose.

Having said all of this, I am enjoying the mental image of a toaster acting like a cattle grid for dangerous grannies.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 20/07/2025 22:44

My husband now wants to know how many dogs have been killed by toasters, because I said to him "toasters have killed more people than dogs..."🙄

TheGreatDownandOut · 20/07/2025 22:48

@CoubousAndTourmalet so a quick google throws up two instances of pet dogs sadly dying in toaster-related fires. Although I’m not sure this can count as a statistic.

It also threw up an article entitled “is my pet cat or dog a person or a toaster”

And another one about a dog called toaster

hungryduck · 20/07/2025 22:52

Google says there was a dalmatian called Dudley in North Wales that was killed by a fire started by a toaster. That's the only one Google shows.

Although Google also showed me a YouTube clip of a dog called toaster being chased by a raccoon.

Gothic robo-pig definitely needs some kind of anti-toaster device. Maybe a fire extinguisher too,

TheGreatDownandOut · 20/07/2025 20:01

Ok fair enough, I amend that statement to “if you pay the dog no mind, it won’t attack you”
Is that better? I did also say that the dog shouldn’t have jumped up at you and the owner shouldn’t have allowed it…

I posted up thread about a similar thing that happened to me in the park the other day, a massive staffy came and jumped up at me and a friend of mine. Now that’s not ok. It’s bad manners. But I moved on with my life and still don’t assume that all other dogs behave this way and it was extremely clear to me that the dog just wanted to say hello and it wasn’t coming to rip my throat out.

The owner was at fault there, he shouldn’t be letting his dog jump up at strangers of course. But there is a huge difference between rogue playful dog and the assumptions the OP has made that all dogs are out to kill her/her kids/her dog.

I don’t understand why you’re now making it about whether a dog would rip someone’s throat out, or kill them? The OP originally talked about ‘ruining the park for everyone else’. Why are you setting a higher bar for what the thread is about?

I can give countless examples of how crap owners are ruining my local parks for others, and I’ve given some on this thread, quite alarming and harassing things that have happened to me and my children. But you seem to think they’re not relevant because they don’t fall within your definition of an ‘attack’. It’s almost as if when I show that something you’ve said is just untrue, as I just did up thread, you change the goalposts of what you say is under discussion/relevant.

A few pages back it was nice when another poster, with whom I’d disagreed, and I found some common ground and we agreed to focus on that. Since then it’s become a really negative experience. You crack on. I’m gonna hide the thread now which is something I’ve never done before. Just sick of having my experiences reduced to nothing.
