I’m so tired of people with dangerous dogs ruining the park for everyone else.

Every time I take my children and our small cavapoo to the park, there’s always someone with an intimidating dog off the lead. Yesterday it was a man with a huge German Shepherd (and I mean huge), a bully breed on a lead, and an Akita off the lead just wandering around.

This is a busy, very suburban park, full of families and young children. And there I am, trying to scoop up my two toddlers, push the pram with the baby, grab the dog, and move away as fast as possible because I am not taking the risk of one of those dogs attacking. And let’s be honest, if something did happen, I’d have to sacrifice my dog to protect my children.

Even the two dogs that were technically on a lead, if they decided to go for another dog or child, there’s no way he could have held them back. They were enormous, powerful breeds.

And don’t get me started on the Akita. It was off-lead, trotting around freely as if that’s totally normal. Akitas were originally bred to guard property and hunt large game, including bears. They are strong, territorial, and known for being aggressive toward other dogs. They can be incredibly unpredictable and are not the type of breed you let wander freely in a public park full of children and pets.

Today it was a woman with a giant Rottweiler off-lead, paying absolutely no attention while she scrolled on her phone. Again, no control, no awareness. Rottweilers were originally bred to drive cattle and guard livestock, and they are incredibly strong, protective dogs. They have a natural guarding instinct, which can easily turn dangerous when not properly controlled. It’s no coincidence that they feature in so many fatal dog attacks, especially involving children. The number of child deaths caused by Rottweilers is horrifying and well-documented. It doesn’t matter how sweet you think your dog is at home but when a dog like that turns, it’s too late to stop it.

Far too many times my own dog, who is a total wimp and literally gets bullied by a chihuahua, has been attacked by dogs whose owners claim, “Oh, they never normally do that.” It’s always after the fact, once the damage is done.

And honestly, it’s the complete lack of awareness that really gets me. You might think your dog is friendly, but when you’re letting it freely wander up to children and other dogs, especially massive, powerful breeds, it’s terrifying. It might not scare you, but to everyone else, it’s incredibly intimidating.

I love dogs. I grew up with them. But this constant anxiety when I take my children out is exhausting. I shouldn’t have to be on high alert every time we go to the park because someone refuses to take basic responsibility for an animal that could cause serious harm.

100% of dog bits are caused by dogs. No dogs, no dog bites.

No horses, no riding accidents

No cars, no driving accidents

No planes, no flying accidents

Dogs bring a lot of joy and benefits to a lot of people.

OonaStubbs · 20/07/2025 17:52

Horses, cars and planes are modes of transport. Dogs are not.

I’m not muzzling, all this guff about you’re going to beat a dog to death with your stick!

As if, you’ve not got a chance, no matter if they look at you or your grandchildren.

You’re making yourself sound quite hilarious. 😆

Or she goes to prison for animal cruelty and her grandkids grow up without the influence, or sense entitlement, of an absolute nutter in their lives.

It's funny though.

No one really uses a horse in the UK to actually get around.

Toasters kill 700 people a year (global figure).
Toasters kill more people than dogs.

Think we need to start a petition to ban, or at least muzzle, the evil toasters.

However, this thread has highlighted how important it should be to teach statistics and risk assessments in schools. A campaign to include it in GCSE maths would probably be wise.

Yes you can. A dog is not going to come and attack you while out in public, unprovoked. With maybe the exception of an XL. Which must be on a lead and muzzled by law.

If you’re paying the dog no mind, they will ignore you.

If you’re like @nund and are desperate to hit any dog that comes near you with a stick, you will probably get attacked.

Absolute bollocks. Stop minimising the almost daily issues some people face with anti social dog ownership. You’re saying as long as it’s not a bully and I pay it no mind it’s not going to bother me. I have first hand experience that is rubbish. One recent example; a medium sized spaniel type ran at me going through a wooded area, jumped up 3 times, owner ineffectively swearing at the dog but failing to control it. Bruises all up my arms from the dogs claws.

Don’t you dare tell me that was my fault for failing to ‘pay it no mind’. I was paying it as little mind as I possibly could.

Was the dog trying to attack you or play with you?

I would imagine it’s the latter - in which case, that dog has bad manners and it’s the owners fault. The owner shouldn’t have let that happen.

But, if you read my post… and indeed what this whole discussion is about, we are talking about DANGEROUS dogs actually attacking you. Not unruly dogs trying to play with you (which is a separate issue and I agree, it shouldn’t happen)

I completely agree. Not a lot of thought going in to some of these anti-dog posts!

In any case, they can all chunter amongst themselves for all I care. Dogs are wonderful animals. And they aren’t going anywhere any time soon…

The point you made in your post is exactly what I was responding to. You said that if you pay a dog no mind it will ignore you. That’s exactly what you said. I gave you a cast iron example to show that is wrong and yet again you brush it aside. It’s a ‘separate issue’. The bruises on my arms caused by a dog I was ignoring are not a separate issue; they disprove the point YOU just made.

I can’t debate with people who won’t do it in an honest, open way, it’s impossible. Enjoy the thread, you’re clearly having fun.

Ok fair enough, I amend that statement to “if you pay the dog no mind, it won’t attack you”
Is that better? I did also say that the dog shouldn’t have jumped up at you and the owner shouldn’t have allowed it…

I posted up thread about a similar thing that happened to me in the park the other day, a massive staffy came and jumped up at me and a friend of mine. Now that’s not ok. It’s bad manners. But I moved on with my life and still don’t assume that all other dogs behave this way and it was extremely clear to me that the dog just wanted to say hello and it wasn’t coming to rip my throat out.

The owner was at fault there, he shouldn’t be letting his dog jump up at strangers of course. But there is a huge difference between rogue playful dog and the assumptions the OP has made that all dogs are out to kill her/her kids/her dog.

@eastegg
Play is a very different thing from aggression. Yes, this dog was not well controlled, but aggressive dogs are motivated in an entirely different way than playful or boisterous, but non-aggressive, dogs. It is still irresponsible ownership to allow your dog to jump on a stranger, but the dog is exhibiting a very different behaviour pattern than an attacking dog would be.

I'm sure on a worldwide basis, more people are killed by dogs than toasters. And toasters at least serve some practical purpose, unlike dogs.

In your opinion, dogs serve no purpose.

I’m not wholly convinced the estimated 13.5 million dog owners in the UK.

You may be surprised to know that most people don’t care about your opinion.

Dogs serve no practical purpose. Any purpose they have is one that people have made up in their heads. "They make people happy", "people get exercise by taking them out for walks" etc etc.

You irrational hatred of dogs serves no practical purpose either. Maybe focus the energy you spend on it on something useful.
