I’m so tired of people with dangerous dogs ruining the park for everyone else.

Every time I take my children and our small cavapoo to the park, there’s always someone with an intimidating dog off the lead. Yesterday it was a man with a huge German Shepherd (and I mean huge), a bully breed on a lead, and an Akita off the lead just wandering around.

This is a busy, very suburban park, full of families and young children. And there I am, trying to scoop up my two toddlers, push the pram with the baby, grab the dog, and move away as fast as possible because I am not taking the risk of one of those dogs attacking. And let’s be honest, if something did happen, I’d have to sacrifice my dog to protect my children.

Even the two dogs that were technically on a lead, if they decided to go for another dog or child, there’s no way he could have held them back. They were enormous, powerful breeds.

And don’t get me started on the Akita. It was off-lead, trotting around freely as if that’s totally normal. Akitas were originally bred to guard property and hunt large game, including bears. They are strong, territorial, and known for being aggressive toward other dogs. They can be incredibly unpredictable and are not the type of breed you let wander freely in a public park full of children and pets.

Today it was a woman with a giant Rottweiler off-lead, paying absolutely no attention while she scrolled on her phone. Again, no control, no awareness. Rottweilers were originally bred to drive cattle and guard livestock, and they are incredibly strong, protective dogs. They have a natural guarding instinct, which can easily turn dangerous when not properly controlled. It’s no coincidence that they feature in so many fatal dog attacks, especially involving children. The number of child deaths caused by Rottweilers is horrifying and well-documented. It doesn’t matter how sweet you think your dog is at home but when a dog like that turns, it’s too late to stop it.

Far too many times my own dog, who is a total wimp and literally gets bullied by a chihuahua, has been attacked by dogs whose owners claim, “Oh, they never normally do that.” It’s always after the fact, once the damage is done.

And honestly, it’s the complete lack of awareness that really gets me. You might think your dog is friendly, but when you’re letting it freely wander up to children and other dogs, especially massive, powerful breeds, it’s terrifying. It might not scare you, but to everyone else, it’s incredibly intimidating.

I love dogs. I grew up with them. But this constant anxiety when I take my children out is exhausting. I shouldn’t have to be on high alert every time we go to the park because someone refuses to take basic responsibility for an animal that could cause serious harm.

You were terrified of a dachshund?

That seems perfectly reasonable to me. I'm terrified of dachshunds. I know two locally, both highly reactive. Give me giant breeds anyday.

Please quote whoever said they don't give a shit if kids get hurt.

Literally all the dog owners insisting that their lil baby wouldn’t hurt a fly. We don’t care. Keep your dog on a lead, it’s not hard unless you are a selfish wanker.

That’s not what that poster asked you…
Bit grumpy today are we?

That is not the same as someone saying they don't give a shit if their dog hurts a kid.
Am still waiting for a quote.

Has it escaped your notice that two of the dogs the OP was panicking about actually were on leads?

They should invent a disease to curb the excess dog population, like they did with Myxomatosis on rabbits in Australia. This would solve the problem in one fell stroke.

That is people's pets you are on about.
You really need some therapy about your dog issues.

You are just the gift that keeps on giving aren’t you.

Pigs, robot dogs and now dog specific disease. Are you ok?

Vegans probably. All those vegans that care about animals so much they want all our pets killed 😏

Agreed. Been vegan 23 years-lets not stop at pets--kill all the wildlife too so they don't have to suffer. And any humans whose quality of life isnt optimal.

You sound just like me 😂90% of these references go over the top of my head too! Are you a 1964 vintage perchance?

No. I'm a genuinely old person. I'll not be exact in case people find me and send the dogs round, but a bit before 1964.

Wordsmithery · 18/07/2025 08:44

Late to the convo, as usual.
OP, you're absolutely right. And it's insane the number of people on here who don't get the point.
Dogs in public places should always be supervised closely. No question.
Any dog can turn, in the right set of circumstances. Small dogs can be grumpy and nip or full-on bite. Large breeds bred to hunt, fight or protect can kill, due to bite strength and muscle mass. Once they turn, there's no going back.
And any dog running over to or jumping up at small kids can be pretty scary to said kid, regardless of how friendly the owner claims it to be.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 18/07/2025 09:04

@Wordsmithery

Again, has it escaped your notice that these dogs did not "run over" to the OP and that two of them were on leads?

Do you expect people to not walk their dogs at all? To not have a dog? To go out at 4am with their dog?

Where will all this dog hate end?

I can understand the issue with out-of-control dogs but that doesn't appear to be the case here. Why should people receive abuse for walking their dogs on a lead?

But...none of the dogs 'ran over' to the OP. And the other two dogs she was on about WERE ON A LEAD. It's insane the number of people on here who are ignoring the facts in the post!

You’re ignoring the facts, or at least reducing the OP to suit your needs. I’ve just reread the OP, which is something I’d recommend to many posters on many threads!

She says every time they go to the park there’s someone with an intimidating dog off lead. So that’s a problem. Then she gives 2 examples, one from that day and one from the day before, an Akita and a Rottweiler, both off lead. That’s a problem. The fact there were two others on lead doesn’t really change things.

Onleemoi · 18/07/2025 12:29

Exactly.
As a person who clearly prefers small crossbreeds, she finds any dog bigger than a Labrador intimidating.

Her actual thread title describes the dogs as ‘dangerous’ not intimidating.
Then her actual OP doesn’t describe one dangerous dog.

If she had said that the Akita or Rottie had actually come over and starting snarling at her, she’d have had more sympathy. She doesn’t even mention that these dogs paid her, her children or her shit designer breed any notice - let alone that they came anywhere near her.

She’s getting huffy at them merely existing in the same place as her or not… including the ones on leads and she doesn’t think a lead is a suitable enough restraint.

TheGreatDownandOut · 18/07/2025 13:34

And if you wanna get really nit-picky, she also says the ‘dangerous’ dogs are ruining the park for ‘everyone else’

When she means just her. Because I will assume she didn’t ask every single other park go-er if they minded the dogs being there.

ButterCrackers · 18/07/2025 13:39

Dogs should be on a lead. I’m a dog owner and would never have my dog off lead in a public area. I find that many dog owners are selfish and, even if their dog is well trained, can’t think of the worry a dog can give to others. Dangerous breeds off lead are a threat to dogs on the lead as well as people.

But she started the thread and ran, knowing full well that people will agree because this is MN, not the real world. The amount of dog hate on here is disproportionate to real life. I've had big dogs for almost 50 years and never come across this level of negativity on my daily walks.
