@EsmaCannonball I think the film came out around mid May time so publicity commitments were all done around April May.

In a way I do admire R&M because if they knew about this exposé being in the pipeline month's ago (and the consensus is that they did) then it sure takes some gumption to front on out on the red carpet next to the apparent unknowing actors who are portraying you.

I think Gillian will be able to brush off questions ok because she already stated she found them guarded but Jason really drank the kool aid and I don't envy him next time he has a film to plug and a billion press interviews to do.

Blog post on Landlines

This writer clocked three years ago that something didn't quite add up and used Landlines as her example for the prompt 'Stranger than fiction'

I'm enjoying the cul de sacs of interest these threads are taking us down.

From this blog:

At the same time what they did is so unlikely that if this were fiction I would have put it aside as completely unlikely.

She went along with it though, despite a few things not adding up. She probably thought there was just a bit of 'adjustment' along the way for a better narrative.

Funnily enough, it was when I read Landlines that I became a bit sceptical. That's when I googled them and found Timothy alive and well, which seemed ludicrous considering what she'd written in TSP.

Ill-fitting boots for 1000 miles? I feel I need to read LL and TWS to catch up on all the questionable aspects of the entire series. Surprised to learn bikes are only mentioned in Shropshire according to this blog. RW posted a series of posts on IG showing they cycled from Glasgow all the way to the start of the Pennine Way. Not a major inconsistency, but they all add up.

Here's the wikipedia entry for, "Folie à deux."

I am very keen on this theory of what is going on with these characters. Some of us think he is the dominant partner, others think she is. Personally, I think that they switch rôles depending on circumstances, completely emmeshed.

Folie à deux - Wikipedia https://share.google/1ObODQXAb6B2PT6Z8

Interestingly, one of the examples given in that Wikipedia entry is for a book about the South West Coast Path, Any Porth in the Storm. It sounds like it could be a good read.

Heylittlesongbird · 14/07/2025 22:48

I have always thought I had a novel in me and I am tempted.

My premise will be to look at a number of our best loved grifters over the last few years and draw upon their stories.

I will start from the perspective of having been found out and the crisis management that then ensues.

I will then go back in time to the point that the grift started and move forwards.

I will also cover my go fund me posts, patreon, kick starter, paypal me for charity stuff.

I will caveat the cover with the fact that everything you are about to read is a lie.

I am hoping that will cover me when they research me and discover that I am in fact incredibly boring and have done nothing exciting for years.

Happy to set up a funding platform or accept input if you think it's a goer 😂😀

More interesting is that when they lived in Polruan for those years (2014-2018) they were Sally and Timothy. No interchanging of names, no knowledge of other names. No Ray or Raynor because she never liked Sally.

Where did that info come from? V interesting.

Yes! I remember now. Apart from Tim's illness, it was the boots. No one, but no one, wears boots that cripple them for the length of time it happened in the book. You just wouldn't be able to walk. And I found her descriptions of wearing those boots and the blisters etc. to be outlandish.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/07/2025 22:57

@Heylittlesongbird I like it - to be honest it sounds a damn sight more interesting than these books.

Ahhhh! thanks. I totally misunderstood the blog. I initially read it as someone who merely invited RayMoth to stay with them for a night in some unidentified village on the path. Makes sense now.

FurryHappyKittens · 14/07/2025 23:10

Interesting how they're described in that blog: just another couple down on their luck.

Bruisername · 14/07/2025 22:33

However, we barely recognised any of the places they walked through, as they were shot in Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire, and West Sussex. And we were slightly miffed when the film ended before the journey was halfway through.

from the blog

He's wrong though....

"The Salt Path was filmed in several locations along the South West Coast Path, including Minehead, Porlock Weir, Valley of Rocks, Clovelly, Hartland Quay, Padstow, Newquay, Holywell Bay, Port Quin, and Rame Head. Filming also took place in Chepstow and Aust, and at East Head at West Wittering. ([Classic Cottages]"

(Courtesy of Google)

They filmed the flooded tent incident at Holywell Bay rather than Portheras, which had me quietly tsking to myself in my cinema seat.

TenaciousDeeds · 14/07/2025 23:29

This scandal has had a strange reverse effect on me. I’d never read The Salt Path and when I saw the trailer in the cinema, me and my DH thought it looked very dulll. I’ve just watched the trailer again on YouTube though and strangely this time found it very moving.

I really didn’t expect to react like this, and I think it’s because the couple and what they did and then went through suddenly has become a lot more visceral.

They sound on paper like flakey, dishonest people now, but if you take away what led them to this point, then the story of what they then embarked on is still quite extraordinary.

Don't forget it's Hollywood gloss based on an overcooked dubious narrative. [And if it's just the fact they walked and camped 640 miles, it's hardly unique.]

A blog review of TWS now seems rather outdated. Concludes as follows:

Overall this is a book about learning to live again, learning to let go, trusting in nature and maybe, just maybe, believing in miracles.

We are told Timoth claimed Salray had taken out several credit cards in his name without his knowledge. If that was true, I wonder if cash advances from all the cards was what she used to repay the Hemmings the first time, rather than proceedings from selling her mother's things. It was quite a lot of money and she found it very quickly.

But would she have had time to apply for credit cards in the space of time she paid Hemmings for the first chunk of missing money?

Some tidbits from this blog book review:

It deals with Raynor’s own sadness at the couple’s current situation in life.

The parallels between nature being restored and Moth’s strength returning keeps you turning the pages.

Something I loved about this period in their lives is that it also encouraged Raynor and Moth to begin to trust people again.

The final part of The Wild Silence documents a trek through Iceland the couple make with friends. Once again, I was left wondering how on earth they would complete it, setting off close to winter, with Moth’s health problems.

It depends when she applied. It could have predated the Hemmings' initial discovery I suppose.

That sounds a good explanation.

But I wonder how you take out a credit card in someone else's name, even your spouse? It's a long time since I took out a new card but I'm pretty sure they required a lot of information and would have done some cross checks. And taking out several? Particularly in a short space of time? Don't they all liaise with eachother and a big red flag goes up?

So the more I think about it, the more I wonder whether this was just another fabrication.

Ellmau · 15/07/2025 00:14

They lived at the same address so perfectly feasible, but who knows whether it was true or not.
