Is it socially acceptable to not wear a bra in public?

Is this genuinely unacceptable?… I know some people wear bras because they have to. But I don’t have to as they’re frickin tiny.

I hate wearing one, and often wear a bralet/crop top type one. But in work I wear a normal padded one as I don’t want my nips poking through…. But is this an unnecessary thought process?

Is it okay to not wear a padded bra in the work place, and is it okay to not wear a bra at all in public?

I obvs have a top on!

There’s plenty of times I don’t bother with a bra. Depending on what I’m wearing you can’t tell that I’m not. I wear a sports one for the gym, sometimes a sports one for work depending on top or something not padded or with minimal padding. In this weather I prefer to be braless- who needs an extra layer!!! Even in the winter I won’t always wear one- no one knows under jumpers anyway so why be uncomfortable

PassingStranger · 14/07/2025 00:35

If you don't wear a bra don't they sag, the bra is for support surely.

Agree it's uncomfortable when it's hot.

Bentoforthehorde · 14/07/2025 01:14

This is a fascinating read.
I always thought one of the joys of smaller boobs was not having to wear a bra all the time. Lots of celebrities don't?
I've always had bigger boobs. Since having kids if I don't wear a bra they seem to sort of wander around of their own accord, so I couldn't go out braless. I wear padded bra's so I don't have to check if my nipples are pointing in the same direction.

I am obviously not a professional or in a client facing position though, so not up to date on office nipple etiquette.
Bra is the first thing to come off when I get home though so I am biased and wish society accepted free range boobs.

I feel a bra is always necessary. Even the smallest among us have some jiggle. I, personally, wouldn't dream of going out in public without a bra. But you do you!

lavieenrosetintedglasses · 14/07/2025 01:26

If you don’t want to wear a bra to work give it a try going to other places first.

I couldn’t go out without one for my own comfort, my boobs are big and heavy and feel better with a bra on. I prefer a bit of padding too.

I work from home, once a month have a really early morning Teams call with colleagues in a different time zone and I basically get up in time to put a bra and smart top on and wear pyjama bottoms. I cannot be in work mode with no bra on!

When I was about 20 and svelte/small-breasted, I went to the corner shop with no bra on. Two boys of about 12 walked past me and one of them called ‘Hello Mrs Bouncy Bouncy!’ with the result that I’ve not gone out without a bra for 33 years 🤣

😂 Exactly!

monkeysox · 13/07/2025 21:30

Yes. I know it shouldn't be but it looks awful.
I couldn't go out without one.

Agree.

gottakeeponmoving · 14/07/2025 01:36

I don't wear a bra. My boobs are very big and generally settle somewhere around my waist area. I refuse to have them hoisted and trussed up. Even if I did there is no bra that can do that and allow me to breath at the same time. They are far too heavy to be bouncy so I just let them do their thing. No one notices.

Justherehopingthatsok · 14/07/2025 02:07

I went to my first admin job as a temp at "The British Counsel" at the age of 21. (30+Years ago). I am a natural "36"GG. Obviously I was wearing a bra. But the Manager said out loud to everyone "I'd like to see the noses on those puppies". I didn't know what he meant but I did know it was about me. Sorry just remembered that

Plasticwaste · 14/07/2025 02:07

I never wear one, except a sports bra when running.

Let them free.

I am similarly tiny of boob but do like something lightly padded to hide my nipples. They stick out through t-shirts and floaty tops, and not just when it's cold. If I'm wearing a hoodie or chunky jumper in winter I feel comfortable without a bra. Do whatever you like, if my nipples were more flat I'd go braless more often.

This is what happens to me

I don’t have any more jiggle than a bloke with moobs.

Bit of a drip feed. Op works in a secondary school.
I think wearing a t-shirt with no bra on at school is pushing it.

Not really. It’s not relevant as in my OP I say that I’d wear a bra at work.

OP posts:
Zanatdy · 14/07/2025 07:14

I’d say you definitely need some kind of bra to avoid nipples sticking out, especially working in a secondary school.

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 14/07/2025 07:14

Yabu to ask such a dumb question,

Kindly no one gives a fuck what you do.

And whatever shape or size your body, a bra is optional. To suggest “you” don’t have to due to size is frankly ridiculous.

whitewineandsun · 14/07/2025 07:16

I haven't worn one for eight years. Haven't been burnt at the stake yet.

CandidRaven · 14/07/2025 08:03

I don't bother with one most of the time, the only time I did was when I had to wear nursing pads due to leaking, I only leak every so often now so I've not bothered wearing one, far too uncomfortable in this heat anyway!

Shenmen · 14/07/2025 08:11

Jamesblonde2 · 13/07/2025 21:40

Well depends if you want to look “put together” or not. No way could go without, too much boobage. Those not wearing at all must be very small to avoid bounce etc

Loads of very well put together young woman don't wear bras. Very trendy in the trendy bit of town. (Where they almost certainly don't use the word trendy 😂).

Defo not topless. But my boobs are so small they poke out!

If they 'poke out' people will be noticing. I had small 32A cups in my teens/early 20s and would go braless to work. A mate of mine (bloke) eventually took me aside and asked me to please wear a bra, as we were friends and he didn't want to think of me 'like that' and he couldn't help it 🤣 it was said in a funny way, and he knew I was clueless to the effect it was having. So I did start wearing a cotton training bra as I was there to work, not unwittingly attract attention.

Now I have 34B, post breastfeeding 3 babies, I really have to wear a lightly padded bra as my nipples are so obvious, constantly. It just doesn't look right in my smart office clothes to have nipples sticking out, at home I don't care.

Lioncub2020 · 14/07/2025 08:46

No issue at all. The sight of the shape of a nipple will not kill anyone.

RampantIvy · 14/07/2025 09:07

I wonder what the answers on this thread would be if men were replying.

Quite frankly, I don't care whether other women wear them or not.

Use nipple shields?

Cososom · 14/07/2025 09:24

I'm not overly blessed in the tittage dept, but would never go without a bra. It feels weird and clothes don't look as good (on me at least).
