As a flip side to the expensive letdowns thread , has anyone bought anything low cost that’s been good ?
I got a mascara in b and m that’s great on my long blonde but thin eyelashes.
And an ineos hand wash that is actually really nice.

My MIL has venetian blinds. She says they are a complete pain to clean. She has replaced a few of the ones in the higher traffic rooms and left the ones in the rooms she doesn't use as often (so doesn't have to see they aren't clean!)

Best way to clean venetians is to put an old sock on your hand and bend thumb to fingers as if you had a glove puppet on your hand. Run along the slats.

I need this! I've been using post it notes for years!

I got mine from Amazon

NinjaGin · 29/07/2025 12:51

£5 reusable eye mask - don't know if it's a "thing" but noticed as I've got older (more into peri) I'm more sensitive to light when trying to sleep. Never used them before but had a free one with a hotel and liked it so got a cheap one on Amazon - it's amazing! Totally tricks my brain and I am definitely sleeping better.

@caramac04a bit off topic but don't you like the day / night blinds? I've been considering replacing my Venetian Blinds with them in some rooms as I'm so sick of cleaning them, but if they're just as bad I won't bother!

They’re fine in other rooms but in the kitchen I seem to get little flies trapped in them and as they’re ’doubled’ it’s a job to clean them.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/07/2025 14:02

Thanks @caramac04

Is that a concentrated fabric conditioner or the wee balls?

The concentrated fabric conditioner - the liquid! You do not need a lot of it at all, I was blown away at how little of it you need and how strong of a scent a little makes

UpMyself · 29/07/2025 14:55

how strong of a scent a little makes Quite. It stinks.

They used to, but they have gone terrible lately. I went in recently for a few 'around the house clothes' the t-shirts were all very short. I tried on 3 sizes and they were all the same length just got wider. Material is also not what it used to be. Don't tumble dry them.

As someone else said the mens seem better. I got 2 mens ones for myself and they are much longer and feel thicker.

I used to get most of my office blouses/ tops there and they would last for years.

I might get the men's. That's a good idea.

MrsPositivity1 · 29/07/2025 17:12

These are fantastic. They extend the length of the prongs in your dishwasher so your glasses don’t fall over.

now that I’m typing this I realise someone may have already mentioned these 😂 and that’s why I bought them

Oh god, don’t use fabric conditioner! It’s so bad for the environment. ☹️

I can’t bear it when I stay in an Airbnb and the towels stink of fabric conditioner. Makes me feel sick!

dogpool · 29/07/2025 20:25

Absolutely stunned at the rudeness from posters piling in to decry fabric conditioner. So you don’t like it- good for you, but others do. There is no need to sour the tone of an otherwise lovely thread with your supercilious opinions.

UpMyself · 29/07/2025 23:22

@HotCrossBunplease , it's environment unfriendly and it doesn't wash out of items bought pre-loved. Some of it smells so horrible that it's as bad as BO.

Seriously, you’re doubling down? What are you trying to achieve?

UpMyself · 30/07/2025 00:08

@HotCrossBunplease , I don't understand your comment. If you don't like the smell of it, you don't want to be anywhere near it. It might smell lovely to you, but vile to me.

Nobody on a nice thread about bargain buys cares what you think about fabric conditioner!

It’s very rude to slag off other people’s recommendations just because they are not your personal taste.

Yes if your personal taste is to smell of softner then that's fine. Each to their own and we don't need to embarrass anyone.

But fabric conditioner is very bad for the environment and I don't think there's anything wrong at all with highlighting that. More people should know so more people can make an informed choice. I bet quite a few people reading this thread didn't know and now will stop using it. So that's good.

I doubt it- nobody ever responds well to being bossed about. Your environmental evangelism in this context is tone deaf.

I don't think I'm being evangelical?? Maybe you are.confused. I just don't see the point in doing something that's destructive.

You personally presumably don't respond well to being "bossed about" no matter how important it is for the health of our wildlife. Thats a character trait some people do have. But other people might be interested. You've made your point forcefully that you personally don't want to read about harm to the environment and we have taken note. Whether people agree with you is up to them.

HotCrossBunplease · 30/07/2025 08:18

Unbelievable.

I don’t actually use fabric conditioner myself but I think I am going to start now.

Do you actually have any bargain recommendations?

No. But I do think you might be interested in some really strong drain cleaner that will devastate aquatic life. Would you use that too? If I start being evangelical about how you shouldn't?
