As a flip side to the expensive letdowns thread , has anyone bought anything low cost that’s been good ?
I got a mascara in b and m that’s great on my long blonde but thin eyelashes.
And an ineos hand wash that is actually really nice.

I tried Glasses Direct but had to return them (twice), once because the lens was loose and moving about in the frame. I think GD are probably OK for quite basic prescriptions but I have varifocals and they really didn't work for me. Plus I seem to remember the refund took a while.

oh that's a shame. I have been very satisfied with mine but yes they are just one prescription

Reading specs from Amazon, 4 pairs were only about 14 pounds and as I regularly lose and sit on the damn things, these are a bargain.

TheGreenBow · 17/07/2025 22:38

A hand held fan from Argos. Not sure if they’re still reduced but they were £12 from £15. They’re also sold in Sainsbury’s but for £15. Come in a few colours.

Have bought several as gifts now too and everyone loves them. Rechargeable and 3 speeds and they fold backwards so can sit on a desk or table too.

Ps did anyone catch which shower gel was recommended in Lidl? I’ve been through all the pages and not sure if I missed it

A wool duvet to replace our horrible, sweaty polyester one, not massively cheap at £40 but well worth it.

A wool duvet for £40 is so cheap! Where did you buy it from?

Diblin93 · 18/07/2025 02:37

I bought a winter coat in Joule yesterday. Reduced from £199 to £79

Daygloboo · 18/07/2025 03:30

This thread is a great idea but its so bloody irritating because half the posts list what they bought but then dont give details of what it's called or where they got it from. Arrrrrrrgh !!!!

Amazon, just search for wool duvet, it’s slightly more expensive now that it’s not Prime day. It’s a Silent night one.

Absodry moisture absorber has been great for our bathroom, it's like the Unibond one but you don't end up with the horrible blue gunk, you just pour out the water once it's full and swap out for a new bag. It also looks nicer lol, it comes in muted green, blue and pink, and also neutral dark grey. I got it from Costco but link to the blue version on B&Q for £24 (I think the grey is on sale for £17): https://www.diy.com/departments/absodry-duo-blue-compact-moisture-absorber/7350000859416_BQ.prd

Bar Keepers Friend, found out about it when looking for something to polish scuffs off our induction hob. Found out it's great for cleaning loads of other things that doesn't mind a slight abrasive like the kitchen sink, tea stains from mugs, limescale in the bathroom... I've found it does a better job than baking soda. You can get it from Lakeland for £2.99: https://www.lakeland.co.uk/8868/bar-keepers-friend-stain-remover-300g#product-details-accordion

The best cat hair removal tool I've used is this sponge thing, it is so much better than any of the other things I've tried (lint roller is actually the worst). But I've got very hairy long-haired cats so can only vouch for getting that soft layer of fur they leave behind, no idea how well this works with short hair. I have 3 sponges dotted around the house and use it on clothes, a fabric armchair, the velvet sofa, cotton bedsheets, the carpet on the stairs... Life changing. Only thing to note is once it's picked up a fair amount of hair, you do need to remove that or else you'll start transferring the fur back into surfaces you're trying to clean. Amazon's got it for about a fiver at the moment (yes I'm stocking up): https://amzn.eu/d/fhp6f5G

Ordered, and lots of other stuff in baskets.

Mine is Vanish soap bar. Lasts ages and does the job everytime.

Ice box if you don't have a freezer with an ice maker.

Fill it up and it's enough to last a while & useful for when you have guests round.

I have one almost brand new if anyone wants to buy

takes up lots of space and all to drain lettuce!

😅, bought one after recommendations from a previous similar thread.
Useful but yeah, takes up space.

A really cheap shower cap from Tesco, cost £1.25, I use it to cover mixing bowls while dough rises. Much better than plastic bags and elastic bands.

Dh always brings shower caps home as “gifts” from business trips, and I like making bread - never thought of using the shower caps for anything before!!

Do you mind me asking how much the monthly cost is please? I am thinking of self funding as I think I would have better control with more frequent reading. I currently test… erm…. maybe if I’m poorly.
Overall my levels are good but could be better.

placemats · 18/07/2025 13:19

CIF cream for plastic doors and windows. Amazing.

Loving all these suggestions. Will be buying Absodry.

It's £50 every two weeks, worth every penny

Daygloboo · 18/07/2025 16:23

BTW does anybody know if the own brand face stuff in Aldi amd Lidl is OK.. I read a review somewhere praising one of rhe moisturiser or something and wondered if that stuff is all right. And rhe shampoos etc ?

placemats · 18/07/2025 16:48

I have the Aldi Rice cleanser which is fantastic, bit pricey at £4.99 plus I can't be without Lacura Q10 multi intensive serum with Hyaluronic acid. @Daygloboo

JMSA · 18/07/2025 16:55

Oh my goodness, I just thought of something brilliant. I recently bought these shower caddies, to keep the cubicle nice and tidy. They’re fab and come with super strong self-adhesive stickers to keep them up. Mine have been up for months now, they’re full of bottles and haven’t budged. The black ones have a further code for 20% off, which means that they’d only cost £8.

To ask for - Best low cost thing you’ve bought recently ?
JMSA · 18/07/2025 16:58

That’s 2 for £8, I believe.

My 10ft steel frame above ground pool. Brought it from sports direct for £59. Bargain. It’s been a godsend during the heatwave!!

I’ve had the Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser dupe and it’s fab. OTOH I also bought the balm cleanser (think it’s meant to be an Elemis dupe?) and it was awful. So greasy and not in a good way. Ended up throwing it out.

I’ve used their moisturiser before and it’s good. I bought one of their Clinique moisture surge dupes but haven’t used it yet as I’m running down the moisturiser I’m using first.
