The law of attraction

Do you believe in it? Has it helped your life in anyway by trying to put it into practise? I read the book a few years ago and have been thinking about it. Interested to hear views or 'testimonies'.

Edit: I have been going through a really hard time of late and I guess im trying to find comfort where I can.

Should have maybe posted this in the philosophy section.

@pizzaandchips123 Have you watched The Secret? Is that the book you read?

I believe in it to a certain extent. I genuinely think what you put out is what you get back.

(I'm not talking about when bad things happen to you) I mean more a general sense of if you smile the world smiles with you.

I think being grateful for the things you do have instead of what you DONT have does make you thankful and more at ease.

@Thebibleofdave yes, it is the Rhonda brynes book I have read and watched the documentary on it. Just wondered I guess if the scientific element they portray has any truth in it. I remember years ago really trying to implement it into my life and am also aware of confirmation bias. I guess I'm at a hard time in my life and seeing what I can do to change horrendous circumstances

My best friend absolutely followed the advice to a T to "win the lottery jackpot". Everyone laughed at her of course, but I kid you not - less than 6 months later she won £50K which was the jackpot in a random lottery she entered. Absolutely true story.

I definitely believe in it, but it very difficult to put into practice as you have to absolutely believe that it will happen, which is hard to do when things are going shit.

Thebibleofdave · 12/07/2025 13:27

Sorry to bang on but I'll give you a few examples of where this very well might of been coincidence but here goes.....😂

I was sat in my kitchen and I noticed the only white appliance I had was the kettle. Went to work later that day and someone offered me a black kettle out of nowhere.

I wrote on a £5 note to add 2 zeros. I bet 50p that day and won £5187. I wasn't complaining!

I painted a picture of london (it was crap by the way) but joyfully hung it on my wall as I always wanted to go. 2 months later I was on the very same boat watching the fireworks on new years eve.

Yes it might be a load of crap. But for me I think it's based on a positive mental attitude, gratitude for what you do have, and just the thought of today is going to be a great day!!!!!

Please feel free to PM me if you need a handhold for any reason. Us mumsneter's are here for you x

My best friend also did similar things and those kinds of weird stuff happened to her too!!

The big one was that 50K lottery win, but loads of small "coincidences" happened as well just like you say.

Mayflower282 · 12/07/2025 13:31

It works. I find the tricky bit is figuring out what I actually want though!

Ayeayeaye25 · 12/07/2025 13:33

I have just read Let them by Mel Robbins that has been very good and freeing.

pizzaandchips123 · 12/07/2025 13:36

Wow! These are really amazing. I do think there is truth in it, but also agree with the gratitude and positive mindset aspect.

The lottery win is amazing it sounds like something out a movie.

This has given me hope.

@XelaM Good on your friend! Suppose you gotta be in it to win it!!!!!

I don't want to send you down a rabbit hole but get on the quantum mechanics YouTube videos😅 'the double split experiment'

Long story short from a very uneducated woman.....the fact the scientists were watching and expected a certain outcome was actually making it happen.

Gosh I sound thick😌

Thebibleofdave · 12/07/2025 13:44

Ooooh lets all do an experiment! Think of the most random thing and seriously concentrate on it and see if it pops ups and can update the thread! Somthing random like black kettle🤔

NCfor24 · 12/07/2025 13:55

My thoughts are exactly the same as @Thebibleofdave but I am unable to articulate them that well.
I am positive and more genuinely happy if I just believe things will be ok. If someone cuts me up on the road, I assume they didn't see not that they were out to get me...benefit of the doubt thinking. I know that financially we will be ok. We aren't doing amazing but I'm grateful for what we have and just believe the future will be fine. Not to the extent I'll be frivolous and I do save obviously, just more a confidence that life will sort me out.
I think it's the positive mental attitude bit.

And great things have happened to me in the past. And I always find a great parking space even when a car park is rammed because I thank the universe/angels/life as I drive around!

NCfor24 · 12/07/2025 13:56

Oh, and I've tried to reinforce positive thinking with me kids and the law of attraction...my son has been manifesting us a 4 bed detached for years because he hates sharing a bedroom 🤣

MistressoftheDarkSide · 12/07/2025 14:00

If you buy into the popular version of "the law of attraction" you have to accept that things like cancer, rape and being involved in war or natural disaster are your own doing, that you have "attracted" it. (Rhonda Byrne writes this in the original book "The Secret". It's a dangerous psychological game to play with yourself.

I have had odd incidences of things turning up when I most needed them, but I'm damn sure I didn't attract widowhood, and an absolutely relentless string of hard luck over the last few years.

It's used alot in MLMs to avoid the fact that if the business model doesn't work for you, it's not the economy or anything else. Oh no, it's because no matter how hard you try, you're not vibrating hard enough and you are a failure.

The low level fun stuff is all well and good, but be aware that it can mess with your head big time. Just my two cents worth, based on experience.

pizzaandchips123 · 12/07/2025 14:03

Oh I'm so glad I made this thread. I'm going to try today and see if I can manifest something random and update as well ☺

I actually would fully agree with a lot of what you have said @MistressoftheDarkSide. When I first read the book around 9 years ago it really got in my head and actually exasperated my mild OCD (not cleaning related haha). So any minor inconvenience that happened I was convinced beyond reason I had brought into the universe. Being older now and going through a hard time, I wanted to give it another go and at the same time improve my positive thinking x

I'm very positive, a silver lining kind of person, and I always think everything will work out...good things do happen to me regularly. I definitely believe what goes around comes around

One weird thing that does happen is I'll say "haven't seen such and such for a long time" and I always see them within 24 hrs!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 12/07/2025 14:10

Don't get me wrong, positive thinking is not to be sniffed at, nor is counting one's blessings, after all Hope is sometimes all we have and a powerful force.

So I hope get what you want and need from it ❤️‍🔥

Can you say "I haven't seen Lord Lucan for a long time"?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 12/07/2025 14:13

I think it can be a dangerous road to go down if you take it seriously and suffer poor mental health

@MistressoftheDarkSide I don't remember reading that in the book or the film. What chapter was the 'rape' bit mentioned?

SharpWriter · 12/07/2025 14:20

I have read The Secret and ended up writing a list of things I wanted. Stuff like: a new friend, a particular car and house I wanted, a professional exam that I found horrendously difficult but really wanted to achieve, and a few other things.

Over the next 2 or 3 years I got all of them.

Yes, you could argue I made it happen, but I definitely had some help from the universe.

Notellinganyone · 12/07/2025 14:23

There is no scientific element- it’s wishful thinking. Fine if it helps you and nothing wrong with being positive but it’s absolutely not science.
